Current/Ongoing

8/99-7/12 Principal Investigator Commonwealth of Kentucky Cabinet for Families & Children Grant: Grant #M-06069912. Comprehensive Assessment & Training Services Project (Recurrent Funding) This project began as a three-year, $1 million grant to the University of Kentucky College of Social Work and College of Medicine (Department of Psychiatry) from the Cabinet for Families & Children. The project mandated the development of an innovative research and clinical program to develop and implement an interdisciplinary approach to evaluation of maltreated children and their families, and to incorporate and transfer mental health knowledge and technology into child welfare forensic decision-making. Currently, the CATS Project is in its sixth year of operation, and is funded at $858,000 annually, providing assessment, treatment, and training services. UK CATS Project also includes a strong research component, which has yielded refereed papers and presentations, workshops, and research posters. Conceptual and empirical investigation manuscripts have been published beginning in 2002. The project also includes a major training site for clinical and research for multidisciplinary graduate and doctoral students. (Leadership of this project is shared with Ginny Sprang, Ph.D, with PI & Co-PI roles alternating yearly.)

8/10-7/12 (Recurrent Funding) Principal Investigator Commonwealth of Kentucky Cabinet for Families & Children Grant: EKU Subaward #452143-11-174 ($162,216) Breaking the Cycle of Child Maltreatment is a program providing psychosocial, psychiatric, medical, and forensic training and case consultation/training for child welfare leadership and staff in high-risk cases.

8 Co-Principal Investigator Department of Homeland Security, National Institute for Hometown Safety, Best Practice Guidelines for Pandemic Disaster Response: A Social Behavioral Evaluation. HSHQDC-07-3-00005. ($962,722). This project develops innovative and best practices for response and management of pandemic disaster, developing and drawing from a database involving systematic review of scientific and other literatures; surveys of experts; and field interviews at sites of pandemic and other disasters. Best practice manuals and web-based curricula will be developed and promulgated. Fieldwork conducted in six US states, Canada, & Mexico.

10/07-7/12 Co-Principal Investigator U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services—Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration National Child Traumatic Stress Network-Level Three Center Grant # 1U79SM058230-01 The Child and Adolescent Trauma Treatment Institute (CATTI) is a multidisciplinary, University-Community collaboration housed at the University of Kentucky's Center for the Study of Violence against Children. The mission of CATTI is to facilitate child and family recovery from psychological trauma through statewide service delivery, and to increase the capacity of the mental health community to provide services that are empirically-based and culturally relevant. This mission is undertaken in partnership with public child welfare, the judiciary and the Department of Mental Health. This project builds on an already nationally-recognized child assessment and treatment center in Kentucky, and proposes to develop a clinical nucleus for clinical training, and dissemination of trauma informed evidence-based practices (TI-EBPs) in Kentucky. The project is funded at $1.6 million over four years.

2/11-5/12 Co-Investigator Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA). NCCTS Data Supplement Grant Program. “Factors Impacting the Completion of Trauma-focused Treatments: What Can Make a

Internally Funded Research

7/06-6/08 Co-Principal Investigator Pilot project in partnership with Carol Jordan (UK Center for Research on Violence against Women) “The Sentencing & Parole of Battered Women Who Kill: The influence of gender & victim type.” This is an internally funded project designed to generate findings regarding incarcerated female victims of violence. Initial data collection and analysis has revealed significant data regarding child maltreatment and fatality events that will generate additional findings, which can be used to generate multidisciplinary, grant proposals across Social Work, Law, Psychiatry, and UKCRVAW.

07/06 -06/07 Co-Principal Investigator University of Kentucky, President’s Award, Trauma Exposure and the Drug Endangered Child, $31, 972. Internally funded project (G. Sprang—PI) examining trauma exposure in a statewide sample of child welfare clients.

Completed Projects

10/03-12/08 Co-Principal Investigator U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services--Health Resources and Services Administration Grant #1 T01HP01397-01-00. The UK Behavioral Health Disaster Response Project is associated with the University of Kentucky Comprehensive Assessment and Training Services (CATS) Project. Funding is provided by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Preparedness and Response (ASPR) through grant #1 T01HP01397-01-00 to provide trainings to mental health professionals in collaboration with the University of Louisville to the following disciplines: psychiatry, psychology, social work, professional counseling,

10 marriage and family therapy and drug and alcohol counseling. As of March 2007, approximately 2,500 healthcare providers have been trained by this project statewide, nationally and internationally.

5/06-12/08 Grant Proposal Co-Author, Workgroup Member, and Product Co-Author Council of Social Work Workgroup on Research Integrity. U.S. HHS, Office of Research Integrity through the American Association of Medical Colleges. Grant # US2MPORI01. Purpose of this grant is to develop a national plan for integrating research ethics knowledge and work products for social work researchers.

9/05-9/07 Co-Investigator Commonwealth of Kentucky Department of Mental Health KIDS Now Evaluation Project This state grant of $50,000 was a project led by Robert Walker (UK Center on Drug & Alcohol Research), mandated to design and evaluate prenatal interventions with pregnant women who suffer from substance misuse disorders.

11/02-6/04 Principal Investigator Commonwealth of Kentucky Children’s Advocacy Center Evaluation Project This $50,000 grant from the Justice Cabinet funded an evaluation of CAC organizations throughout the Commonwealth. The mandate was to report to the Justice Cabinet regarding the CACs system’s extant organizational processes and structures, and to provide data and recommendations that can ground future policy and program development decisions regarding these organizations. This grant supported a full-time doctoral student who serves as study director.

01/04-12/04 Consultant NIMH SBIR Project: “Training program for research in rural communities.” Center for Research Strategies, LLC, Denver CO. This $2,000 consultation involved travel and work with a team of rural mental health experts for developing curricula for community-based

9/96-3/00 Co-Principal Investigator National Institutes of Health-National Institute of Drug Abuse Stage I Grant: Developing Rural Substance Abuse Behavioral Treatment University of Kentucky Center for Drug and Alcohol Research This federal funding was for the development of model substance abuse treatment in rural Kentucky. Aims achieved included the development of an empirically driven treatment approach; training and supervision of therapists and recruitment of subjects/clients; and the implementation and testing of the manualized treatment approach. This project yielded five refereed publications and a series of technical reports to NIDA

1/01- 2/02 Research Consultant Reclaiming Mountain Futures Kentucky River Community Care, Inc. This involved providing consultation services to community organizations under the aegis of KRCC to develop and defend a Robert Wood Johnson grant proposal to develop an assessment and capacity management system for substance using children and adolescents in Appalachian Kentucky. This grant was funded in February 2002.
