December 2015 Squeals The official newsletter of Costumer’s Guild West, Inc.® About Our Cover Model: Cynthia Randall I made this dress for the Arizona Renaissance Festival where I played the King’s aunt. The dress was inspired by a photo of a Victorian gown that was yellow silk with black lace. I loved that combination and had been looking for something that fit the Faire’s guidelines but would stand out against the large amount of earth tones that were being used that year. I started with the loose gown. I used Margo Anderson’s pattern for the sleeves, but I drafted the rest of the pattern myself since I could not find a pattern with the back I wanted. I hand applied the lace and beaded the front before assembling the gown. I think I invented new curse words trying to get the pleating even on the back. The undergown is a skirt and bodice that lace together at the waist so I can put the skirt in the washing machine — sometimes practicality has to come before historical accuracy. The undersleeves are silk with layered trim. Dedicated to Jenica, Gunnar, and Dacy Abstract Despite its growing popularity in books, film, games, fashion, and décor, a suitable definition for steampunk remains elusive. Debates in online forums seek to arrive at a cogent definition, ranging from narrowly restricting and exclusionary definitions, to uselessly inclusive indefinitions. The difficulty in defining steampunk stems from the evolution of the term as a literary sub-genre of science fiction (SF) to a sub-culture of Goth fashion, Do-It-Yourself (DIY) arts and crafts movements, and more recently, as ideological counter-culture. Accordingly, defining steampunk unilaterally is challenged by what aspect of steampunk culture is being defined. -

WINTER 2015 magazine A Holiday Tradition: Dunsmuir-Hellman Historic Estate Find your Zen During the Holidays FROM THE EDITOR The holidays bring with them family, traditions, and whether we like to admit it or not, stress. The pressures we put on ourselves to see or be seen are enormous. Living in the Bay Area, we are lucky to have many activities to occupy our time, but often there are too many options. This year, let’s share our relaxing times during the holidays, the ones that make it all worthwhile. Be it the sight of little kids dressed in vel- vet and red plaid, the carolers at the tree lighting, or a nice cup of cocoa with your favorite people, remember one word—Enjoy. One of my favorite activities of the year is touring the holiday windows in and around Union Square. Although it puts me amongst the crazed shoppers, the outdoors gives a new perspective and doesn’t involve spending money. Over the years I’ve been enthused to take my walk around the Square, seeing what is different from last year and what feelings the windows express to me. I find the calming walk a much- needed stress-reliever. Never to be missed are the Macy’s ASPCA windows for a glimpse of cute animals and to drop a few bucks in the bucket for a good cause. The enormous tree inside Neiman Marcus is a tradition, and it would- n’t be December without seeing the Sugar Castle in the lobby of the St. Francis Hotel. The windows at Tiffany are always beautiful and have a tendency to transport me into another world. -

We want you to be an active participant when you see our shows; laugh when it’s funny, cry when it’s sad, gasp when it’s shocking, and enjoy the experience as much as possible. But we want you to do this in the most respectful way possible, for both the performers and your fellow audience members. To ensure the most positive experience, please review the following information prior to arriving at the theatre. Not Allowed in the Theatre: • No outside food or beverages. Only beverages purchased in the lobby and placed in a Citadel Sippy and bottled water will be allowed in the theatre. Unwrapped ice cream bars may be taken into the theatre. Please enjoy all other snacks in the lobby. • Cameras and other recording devices (please note that taking photographs or other recordings in the theatre is strictly prohibited by law). Basic Courtesy: • Turn OFF and put away all electronic devices such as cell phones, iPods, video game systems, etc. prior to entering the theatre. • Do not place your feet on the seat in front of you. • The actors onstage can see and hear the audience during the performance – it is important that audience members not talk, move around, or fidget during the performance, as this can be distracting for the actors, as well as fellow audience members.
