Hydrogen’s unique Properties to manage in an internal combustion engine:

- Widest flammability range (4-75%): stable combustion with very lean mixtures: high efficiency

- Highest flame velocity (up to 5 times higher than ): high efficiency; retarded ignition timing

- Lowest ignition energy (0,016 MJ): prone to abnormal combustion (incl. backfire) due to hot spots

- Combustion temperature can be low enough to avoid any NOx formation (< 1800C): emission-free

- Highest diffusion coefficient and kinematic viscosity: challenging to reach effective homogenization

- Highest auto-ignition temperature (580C): high knocking limit allowing high power densities
