New members of the institute are Michel M. Ter-Pogossian, Ph.D., and Samuel A. Wells Jr., M.D. Ter- Pogossian is professor of radiology at the School of Medicine and director of radiation sciences for Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology. Wells is Bixby Professor and chairman of the De- partment of Surgery at the medical school. He is also chief of surgery at Barnes and Children's Hospitals in the Washington University Medical Center. The two are among 40 new members elected to the institute in recognition of their contributions to health and medicine or related fields. As members of the institute, which was established in 1970, Wells and Ter-Pogossian will help examine health policy issues and advise the federal government. -
Hale Aspacio Woodruff 1900–1980)
Hale Aspacio Woodruff 1900–1980) Biography Hale Woodruff was a black artist who sought to express his heritage in his abstract painting. Of his artwork he said: "I think abstraction is just another kind of reality. And although you may see a realistic subject like a glass or a table or a chair, you have to transpose or transform that into a picture, and my whole feeling is that to get the spectator involved it has to extend that vision" . ." (Herskovic 358) Born in Cairo, Illinois, Woodruff grew up in Nashville, Tennessee. In the early 1920s, he studied at the John Herron Art Institute in Indianapolis, where he lived for a number of years. He later studied at Harvard University, the School of The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Académie Moderne and Académie Scandinave in Paris. He spent the summer of 1938 studying mural painting with Diego Rivera in Mexico, an experience that greatly affected Woodruff's evolving style until the early 1940s. Woodruff's earliest public recognition occurred in 1923 when one of his paintings was accepted in the annual Indiana artists' exhibition. In 1928 he entered a painting in the Harmon Foundation show and won an award of one hundred dollars. He bought a one-way ticket to Paris with the prize money, and managed to eke out four years of study with an additional donation from a patron. In 1931, Woodruff returned to the United States and began teaching art at Atlanta University. It was Woodruff who was responsible for that department's frequent designation as the École des Beaux Arts" of the black South in later years. -

FROM THE ARCHIVES: HANS HOFMANN: THE PEDAGOGICAL MASTER By Irving Sandler May 30, 1973 Irving Sandler died on June 2, 2018 at the age of 92. A frequent contributor to A.i.A., Sandler was best known for chronicling the rise and the aftermath of Abstract Expressionism. One of his most significant articles for A.i.A., the impact of Hans Hofmann, who taught such artists as Helen Frankenthaler and Allan Kaprow, thereby influencing not only second- and third-generation Ab Ex painters but other developments in American art after 1945. Sandler highlights Hofmann’s interest in the deep traditions of European art, and his belief that the best abstract painting continues its manner of modeling the world. “It was in this cubic quality, this illusion of mass and space, that the man-centered humanist tradition—or what could be saved of it—was perpetuated,” Sandler wrote, summarizing a central tenet of Hofmann’s teachings. The full essay, from our May/June 1973 issue, is presented below. In June we re-published Sandler’s essay “The New Cool-Art,” on the rise of Minimalism. —Eds. As both a painter and a teacher Hans Hofmann played a germinal part in the development of advanced American art for more than thirty years. This article will deal only with his pedagogical role—a topic chosen with some trepidation, for to treat an artist as a teacher is often thought to demean his stature as an artist. The repute of Hofmann’s painting has suffered in the past because of this bias, but no longer, since he is now firmly and deservedly established as a pathfinding master of Abstract Expressionism. -

MODERN ART COLLECTION Hale Aspacio Woodruff The Art of the Negro: Native Forms (study) 1950 Oil on canvas 23 × 21 in. (58.4 × 53.3 cm) Museum purchase, gift of an anonymous donor with additional funds provided by exchange, gift of Helen Sawyer Farnsworth 2005.17 A pioneering artist and educator, Hale Woodruff is best known for his mural series on the Amistad slave ship mutiny of 1839, executed for Talladega College in Alabama, and his Art of the Negro series at Atlanta University (now Clark Atlanta University) in Georgia. Still in its original location in the rotunda of Clark Atlanta University’s Trevor Arnett Library, Woodruff’s Art of the Negro series comprises six canvases celebrating African art as a major influence on twentieth-century aesthetic production. Native Forms is a study for the first canvas in the series. Completed in 1939, the Amistad mural series in the Savery Library at Talladega College is painted in a regionalist style with naturalistic forms, strong outlines, and bold color, and owes much to the Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, with whom Woodruff studied in 1936. The Art of the Negro series, on the other hand, shows Woodruff’s interest in European modernism and incorporates elements borrowed from cubism as well as references to African art. On the border between abstraction and figuration, the six compositions in the series respond to a shift in Woodruff’s style in the mid-1940s toward greater abstraction. R. LeRoy Turner R. Leroy Turner is recognized for his vibrant Modern abstractions completed from the late 1920s through the early 1950s. His artwork emphasizes a lyrical form of Cubism, often inspired by visual interpretations of classical music. Many of his compositions are titled after specific pieces of music, and frequently they include themes of melodic symbols, devices and musical scores. Born in Sherwood, ND in 1905, Turner spent much of his childhood living in Minnesota. In Minneapolis, LeRoy Turner studied painting at the University of Minnesota with the noted artists and instructors, Cameron Booth and Edmund Kinzinger. Towards the late 1920s, Turner became highly influenced by the paintings styles of Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, and Paul Klee. In 1928 he traveled to Europe to further his art studies in Munich and Paris. While painting in Europe he continued his association with both instructors Booth and Kinzinger. Returning to the United States, Turner joined the faculty of the St. Paul School of Art in St Paul, MN, where he became a painting instructor from 1933 to 1936. In 1935, to favored reviews, Turner exhibited his abstract paintings at a one-man show at the Nash-Conley Galleries in Minneapolis. -

THE NEW NEGRO ART IN THE INTERWAR PERIOD Abstract: Reflecting on the issue of marginalization in art, it is difficult not to remember of the controversy which surrounds African-American Art. In the colonial period and during the formation of the American national identity this art was discarded along with the entire African cultural legacy and it has emerged as an important issue only at the dawn of the twentieth century, along with the European fashion for “Black Africa,” complemented by the fascination with jazz in the United States of America. The first time that African-American artists as a group became central to American visual art and literature was during what is now called the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s and 1930s. Another name for the Harlem Renaissance was the New Negro Movement, adopting the term “New Negro”, coined in 1925 by Alain Leroy Locke. These terms conveyed the belief that African-Americans could now cast off their heritage of servitude and define for themselves what it meant to be an African- American. The Harlem Renaissance saw a veritable explosion of creative activity from the African-Americans in many fields, including art, literature, and philosophy. The leading black artists in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940 were Archibald Motley, Palmer Hayden, Aaron Douglas, Hale Aspacio Woodruff, and James Van Der Zee. Artist: Charles Alston Title: Family No. 1 Date of Work:1955 Dimensions 21 3⁄4 x 16 1⁄4 in. / 55.2 x 41.3 cm Charles Alston (1907 - 77), painter, sculptor, muralist and teacher of art, was born in North Carolina. This important artist has had a brilliant career studded with prizes and recognition of his varied talents. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from Columbia University where he held a Dow Fellowship in 1931 and was Rosenwald Fellow in Painting (1939 - 41). He did further graduate work at New York University and studied art at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn and the New York art Students League, where he has been an instructor since 1950. He was an Associate Professor of Art at the University of the City of New York. Alston has exhibited in the principal museums of the US and many of them count his works in their permanent collections, as do a number of important art collectors. His murals may be found in such institutions as the Museum of National History in NY, Harlem Hospital in LA, The City College of New York and Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn. His work encompasses many styles, from pure abstraction to almost pure realism. In the latter form, we may note the influence of African sculpture. His work is always strong and highly individualistic; warm with rich color, sharp in blacks and clear whites, or soft and compassionate in texture and color. It is, in fact, so varied that it cannot be categorized, but it is always masterly. -

Let’s Create A Collage An abstract mixed-media project inspired by the work of Romare Bearden What is COLLAGE and DÉCHIRAGE? Collage is a technique where a piece of art is created by assemblying different images and shapes and adding them in layers to a piece of paper, canvas, or object. A collage might include images or headlines from a magazine or news- paper, photos, color papers, fabric, items found in nature, and/or other objects. Déchirage, which means “to tear” in French, is an artistic style that distresses paper to create a 3D patchwork. Déchirage is a form of décollage (which is the opposite of collage) because the art is created by cutting, tearing away, or otherwise removing pieces of the original image. What has happened in the past four-five months seems unimaginable, then again, it could be a blessing in disguise, a kind of wake-up call for all of us. Our global treatment of humanity, our planet’s environment, economic collapse, civil rights and politics have caused a boiling point in our society and then add the Covid-19 Pandemic to top things off and there you have “What’s Next…..Who Knows? One thing I know is art and the art market has literally been around forever and has weathered centuries of wars, economic crashes and many other global disasters and will continue to prevail perhaps in new ways to which it will need to reinvent itself. I believe a correction is taking place as has happened in every market throughout history when strained by historic events. The brick & mortar gallery model is becoming a thing of the past and the existence of art fairs in the near future is questionable regarding the current health situations for the dealers and the collectors who attend. I believe that a large group of galleries are going to close as their business models aren’t strong enough to survive these extreme times.
