Dominican Saint of the Week

August 17-23, 2020

August 17th: St. Hyacinth of , and Priest (left)

St. Hyacinth was one of the first members of Dominicans and the “apostle of the North” , and is also called the “Apostle of Poland”. On a visit to he met St. Dominic and decided to join the order of preachers. He received the habit from St. Dominic himself in 1220. After his religious profession, he was make superior of a small band of missionaries and sent to Poland. They were well received and their sermons produced a deep conversion of the Polish people. He also founded communities in Sandomir, Krakow, and Moravia. His missionary work extended through out , Pomerania, , , , and . He died in Krakow on August 15, 1257. St Hyacinth pray for us.

August 18th: Blessed Mannes O.P. Friar, Priest and Brother of St. Dominic. (not pictured)

Born in 1170, as one of his younger brother’s first followers, he helped establish the Order in and was entrusted with the care of Dominican nuns in Madrid. He was “a contemplative and holy man, meek and humble, joyful and kind, and a zealous preacher.” Mannes died in 1235. Blessed Mannes pray for us.

August 19th: Blessed Jordan de Rivalto of Pisa, Friar and priest (right)

Jordan was born in 1255 in Pisa. He studied the use of preaching for evangelization and pioneered the use of the Tuscan language for preaching and lecturing. In Florence he would reportedly preach five times a day, walking about, both indoors and out, followed by a crowd of listeners as he developed his topic. During his lengthy sermons his friend and Disciple, Silvester of Valdiseve sat near the pulpit with wine to refresh him. Jordan’s preaching was said to have a positive effect on Florentine public live and morality by its emphasis on sound (i.e. Thomistic) doctrine, Christian living and perseverance. Jordan died in 1311. Blessed Jordan of Pisa, pray for us.
