Open Houses--Visits  Saturday, 12 August 2017, Mullin Automotive Museum Tour  Saturday, 30 September 2017, Reagan Library Tour  Tour of Emory Motorsports in North Hollywood, probably in Summer to see—among other things—the 356SL that took Porsche’s 1st class win at Le Mans in 19512  Nethercutt Museum  Norton Simon/Rusnak  Getty Museum/Getty Villa  Griffith Observatory  USS Midway, San Diego  USS Iowa, San Pedro  JPL  Automobile Driving Museum, El Segundo  Porsche Experience Center, Carson

Driving Tours  After Breakfast Meeting Tour to Mt. Baldy (15 April 2017)  Mulholland (Mullin Museum?)  San Diego  San Juan Capistrano via Ortega Highway  Reagan Library  Santa Paula Airport  Santa Ynez Winery  Taco Truck Tour—probably late Spring of 2017.  A breakfast trip up Angeles Crest Highway to Newcomb’s Ranch instead of Mimi’s (Saturday, 15 July 2017)  Overnight Tour to Monterey, possibly 30 September-1 October 2017 to go through Cholame on the anniversary of James Dean’s 1955 crash.  Tour of Angeles Crest Highway to Wrightwood—Grizzly Café (date and details TBD—could be after breakfast).

2 This is not just wishful thinking—Rod Emory has offered to host us. We just need to work out the logistics.

27-29 October 2017, Phoenix Flight

1977. The Dow Jones Industrial Average Index closed the year at 831. New York City was hit with a massive blackout lasting 25 hours, resulting in a baby boom nine months later! Apple released the Apple II personal computer. Jimmy Carter was elected President. Star Wars Episode IV dropped (wait, what happened to episodes I - III?) The King of Rock and Roll died from a heart attack, maybe too many peanut butter and banana sandwiches? And you could check out of the Hotel California any time you liked but you could never leave!

And in Phoenix a small club of Porsche car owners held a concours event called The Phoenix Flight!

Fast forward 40 years and a large club of Porsche car owners is preparing for a concours weekend called Phoenix Flight. Some things just never change!

Join the celebration of 40 years of Phoenix Flight on October 27 – 29, 2017!

sgvr.pca.org 12 of 47 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 10 October 2017

On Friday, October 27th, there will be a reception poolside at the McCormick Scottsdale Resort at 7401 N. Scottsdale Road. The reception will begin at 6:00 PM. Come visit with old friends and meet new friends during this 4 hour evening event. That evening we will hold a silent auction for this year’s charity “Guide Dogs for the Blind” (https://www.guidedogs.com/) so please bring an open wallet for a great cause! Book at room at the resort at a club's special rate and party all night!

Saturday morning, October 28th, come show your nicely cleaned and prepared Porsche in the Concours that will be held on the Streets of Scottsdale! The venue is N. Marshall Way near the Fashion Square mall at Camelback Road and N. Marshall Way. The map is on the Arizona Region's Web site. Parking will begin at 6:30 a.m. and judging will begin at 9:30 AM. After judging wander around and enjoy the shops and galleries. But don't eat too much because the trophies will be awarded at 1:00 p.m. while everyone is enjoying tapas at the awards ceremony. The street has to be turned back to the City by 4:00 PM. If you aren’t entering your car, come down and join in the fun anyway, there will be a special area set aside in the adjacent parking garage for club members!

The Concours is part of the PCA Zone Concours series. So here’s your chance to pick up some points towards the year-end Concours results! Especially if you are coming from another Region, you get “travel points”.

After all that, get some rest because on Sunday October 29th you will want to join in on a tour that will visit two fabulous private collections of automobiles! The proceeds from these tours will go to charity, the RPM Foundation (www.rpmfoundation.org). All PCA members can register for these tours.

You don't have to enter the concours to attend either the Friday reception or the Sunday tour. So even if you aren't into Q-tips and such you still can register for all the other events. So there is no excuse to not come out to celebrate Phoenix Flight 40!

Special hotel room rates are available at the McCormick Scottsdale Resort. To make a reservation call 800-243-1332 or (480) 948-5050. Be sure to ask for the Porsche Club rate!

See the Arizona Region Web site az.pca.org/event/phoenix-flight-40 for more information and to register for your choice of events!

 1974/75 930 Turbo (supplemental)  1968/69 Targa  2015 991GTS Club Coupe  1979-82 930 Turbo

A few more details that might be useful to potential lenders:

 Exhibit installation begins January 15th. Vehicles will be loaded into the exhibit close to this date. Exhibit logistics can be discussed on a case by case basis.  Potential Period of Loan for International Vehicles: December 1, 2017- January 31, 2019  Potential Period of Loan for U.S. based Vehicles: January 1, 2018-January 31, 2019  A formal loan agreement will be developed for each car loaned to the exhibit.  Unless otherwise agreed upon by the Lender and the Petersen, the Petersen will pay for the vehicle’s transport costs. Both parties must agree to the method of transport, both for delivery and return to the Lender.  These loans can be insured under the Petersen’s Fine Arts, all-risk policy, which provides wall-to- wall coverage, subject to the usual exclusions, for the period of the loan, unless the Lender prefers to maintain its own insurance policy on the loan object(s). Oktoberfeste

Oktoberfest began as the celebration of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s (later King Ludwig I6) marriage to Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen on October 17, 1810.7 The Bavarians enjoyed the party, but decided that October was too cold, so they moved it to September. Oktoberfest seems to combine well with German cars (wenn Sie nicht zu viel trinken Bier).

There are lots of Oktoberfeste to choose from:

184th Oktoberfest in München, 16 September through 3 October 2017

Obviously, the one in Munich is the original. One might expect Mädchen im Dirndl, there’s also Armbrustschützen und Scheibenschießen8. It all takes place at die Theresienwiese im Zentrum von München.

Oktoberfest Alpine Village, Weekends, 8 September through 28 October 2017

Friday: 6:00 PM-midnight Saturday: 5:00 PM-midnight Sunday: 1:00 PM-6:00 PM

They encourage patrons to buy tickets online. Friday & Saturday are 21+; Sunday is All Ages.

6 Ludwig I was not “Mad King Ludwig”—that was his grandson, Ludwig II. Ludwig I was essentially overthrown in 1848 shortly after he attempted to tax beer. 7 From wikipedia.org 8 The first athlete disqualified from the Olympics for doping was a Swedish modern pentathlete who had “two beers” to “calm his nerves” before the pistol shooting portion at the 1968 Olympics.

A vital Highway 1 bridge connection in Big Sur set to reopen next week, Caltrans says

From The Los Angeles Times, by Joseph Serna, 6 October 2017:

The new Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge in Big Sur is set to open Oct. 13, about eight months after heavy winter storms created a buckle in the road over a 320-foot drop, Caltrans said.

sgvr.pca.org 35 of 47 facebook.com/PCA-SGVR San Gabriel Valley Region PCA Zone 8 2014 Region of the Year Weekly Update 10 October 2017

The bridge is a vital link in California’s coastal Highway 1 drive. When it was closed in February, it cut off a key route from Southern California to the Big Sur community, whose economy depends heavily on tourism.

Additional storms pounded the Central Coast and created mudslides south of the community in the months that followed, further isolating the town.

Caltrans said replacing the bridge cost $24 million. Repairs of winter storm damage to Californian’s roads, bridge and water infrastructure will likely cost upward of $1 billion.

The new bridge, rising 320 feet above Pfeiffer Canyon, uses steel girders rather than the columns that were used originally and became compromised during the storms, Caltrans said. An exact time for the bridge’s official opening next week has not been announced. [email protected]
