Biographical Note

The fifth child of Sam and Margaret Lea Houston, Antoinette Power "Nettie" Houston was born at Huntsville, Texas, on 1852 January 20. She was educated at Baylor Female Seminary in Independence and Austin Female College. In 1877, she married William Lorraine Bringhurst (1844-1913), a professor at the Texas Military Institute, whose career later took them to Texas A&M and public schools in Bryan and San Antonio, Texas. The couple had five children, but only one, Nettie Houston Bringhurst Bush, survived to adulthood.

Nettie Houston Bringhurst was active in a number of organizations, including the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, which she served as Historian and Poet Laureate.

Mrs. Bringhurst died on 1932 December 5 of injuries received in an automobile accident. Her funeral was held in the Alamo and she was buried in San Antonio.

Scope and Content Note

Correspondence, legal and financial documents, creative writings, printed items, and photographs documenting family, organizational, and business activities are found in the Antoinette Power Houston Bringhurst Papers.

The papers date primarily from the last twenty years of Mrs. Bringhurst's life and are arranged into groups by document type. General Correspondence, arranged chronologically, includes letters from family members, friends, and business associates. Letters from Mrs. Bringhurst's siblings Nancy Houston Morrow, Mary Houston Morrow, and Houston discuss personal matters and family history, including plans to memorialize their father, . Letters from friends likewise discuss family history and other personal matters.

A separate series has been created for correspondence related to the establishment of the Bringhurst Fund, an effort to raise money to pay Mrs. Bringhurst's debts. These include letters of solicitation and responses from contributors.

Legal documents include court papers dealing with a lawsuit against Mrs. Bringhurst.

Financial documents include records of the Bringhurst Fund such as bank statements and lists of contributions.

Creative writing by Mrs. Bringhurst and others are found in the Reports, essays, etc. and Poetry series. Two reports written by Mrs. Bringhurst as Historian of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas are included along with an incomplete sketch of Sam Houston and other writings. Poetry includes typescript and manuscript copies of some of her poems, along with a copy of a poem dedicated to Mrs. Bringhurst.

The remaining groups include scattered printed and miscellaneous items having to do with family and organization activities.

Photographs include a number of formal portraits and snapshots. Most of these are unidentified, but several of family members have been identified.
