Match background

Defeated on Matchday 3 in the Czech Republic, Nice will hope to turn the tables on Slavia Praha as the two clubs meet again in the south of . • Slavia made it two home victories out of two in Group C as they followed up a 1-0 win against Bayer Leverkusen by beating Nice 3-2 at the Eden Arena. First European goals for midfielders Jan Kuchta (two) and Abdallah Sima gave them the edge against their French visitors, for whom kept up his goal-a-game record in the section before claimed a consolation in added time. Previous meetings • Slavia and Nice have been paired once before, in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup second round, and it was only the away goals rule that separated them, the Czech side going through after two draws – 2-2 in Nice, 1-1 in Prague. • Those were the French club's only matches against Czech opposition prior to Matchday 3. Slavia have played an additional nine UEFA games against teams from France, where they have won just once in five visits – 1-0 after extra time against Lens in the third round of the 1995/96 UEFA Cup (after a 0-0 home draw), a competition in which they went on to reach the semi-finals before losing both legs 1-0 to Bordeaux. Form guide Nice • After two years without European football, Nice qualified for a third appearance in the UEFA Europa League group stage after finishing fifth in the truncated 2019/20 campaign. • Les Aiglons finished bottom of their group in 2016/17 but progressed as runners-up the following year in a section comprising Lazio, Vitesse and Zulte Waregem before going out to Lokomotiv Moskva (2-3 h, 0-1 a) in the round of 32. • Nice have won three of their last four home fixtures in the UEFA Europa League group stage (L1), including 1-0 against Hapoel Beer-Sheva on Matchday 2. Slavia • Champions of the Czech Republic for the third time in four years last season, Slavia missed out on a second successive UEFA Champions League group stage adventure this term when, led again by coach Jindřich Trpišovský, they were defeated by Midtjylland in the play-offs (0-0 h, 1-4 a). • Fourth in their UEFA Champions League section last season, behind Barcelona, and Internazionale, Slavia are competing in the UEFA Europa League group stage for the fourth time. They failed to make further progress in 2009/10 and 2017/18 but went all the way to the quarter-finals on their last appearance, in 2018/19, despite scoring just four goals in the group stage. • Slavia have won just one of their last eight European away fixtures (D3 L4), though they did draw at both Inter (1-1) and Barcelona (0-0) in last season's UEFA Champions League. Their overall record on the road in the UEFA Europa League proper is W3 D4 L6, the latest defeat 3-1 at Hapoel Beer-Sheva on Matchday 1. Links and trivia • The teams met in a pre-season friendly in Prague on 16 July 2017, Slavia coming from behind to win 4-1. • Slavia midfielder Nicolae Stanciu was in the Romania side that lost 2-1 to France in the opening match of UEFA EURO 2016. • Nice have played more matches in the UEFA Europa League, group stage to final, without registering a draw (17) than any other club.
