Traditionally, the purposefulness and relevance of a singer-songwriter were defined by something unique in their lyrical acumen, vocal skills and/or guitar or piano accompaniment. In the 1990s this paradigm was tested by the trend towards larger orchestrastion and towards electronic orchestration. In the 2000s it became harder and harder to give purpose and meaning to a body of work mostly relying on the message. Many singer-songwriters of the 2000s belonged to "Generation X" but sang and wrote for members of "Generation Y". Since "Generation Y" was inherently different from all the generations that had preceeded it, it was no surprise that the audience for these singer-songwriters declined. Since the members of "Generation X" were generally desperate to talk about themselves, it was not surprising that the number of such singer- songwriters increased. The net result was an odd disconnect between the musician and her or his target audience. The singer-songwriters of the 2000s generally sounded more "adult" because... they were.

  • Vanguard Label Discography Was Compiled Using Our Record Collections, Schwann Catalogs from 1953 to 1982, a Phono-Log from 1963, and Various Other Sources
Discography Of The Vanguard Label Vanguard Records was established in New York City in 1947. It was owned by Maynard and Seymour Solomon. The label released classical, folk, international, jazz, pop, spoken word, rhythm and blues and blues. Vanguard had a subsidiary called Bach Guild that released classical music. The Solomon brothers started the company with a loan of $10,000 from their family and rented a small office on 80 East 11th Street. The label was started just as the 33 1/3 RPM LP was just gaining popularity and Vanguard concentrated on LP’s. Vanguard commissioned recordings of five Bach Cantatas and those were the first releases on the label. As the long play market expanded Vanguard moved into other fields of music besides classical. The famed producer John Hammond (Discoverer of Robert Johnson, Bruce Springsteen Billie Holiday, Bob Dylan and Aretha Franklin) came in to supervise a jazz series called Jazz Showcase. The Solomon brothers’ politics was left leaning and many of the artists on Vanguard were black-listed by the House Un-American Activities Committive. Vanguard ignored the black-list of performers and had success with Cisco Houston, Paul Robeson and the Weavers. The Weavers were so successful that Vanguard moved more and more into the popular field. Folk music became the main focus of the label and the home of Joan Baez, Ian and Sylvia, Rooftop Singers, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Doc Watson, Country Joe and the Fish and many others. During the 1950’s and early 1960’s, a folk festival was held each year in Newport Rhode Island and Vanguard recorded and issued albums from the those events.

The legacy of slo-core was still being felt at the end of the decade on countless recordings devoted to fragile, slow ballads. For example, Fuck in San Francisco, notably their second album Baby Loves A Funny Bunny (1996), and Kingsbury Manx in North Carolina, with the gentle, bucolic odes of Kingsbury Manx (1999). Texas' American Analog Set (1) advanced the oneiric sound pioneered by Galaxie 500, especially on their second album, From Our Living Room To Yours (1997). The extended single Late One Sunday (1997) wove together two hypnotic patterns, respectively a country guitar twang and a dub bass line, against a backdrop of intense drumming and floating voices. New York's trio Calla (1) sculpted shadowy melodies that slowly crept out of their fragile envelopes on the stark and stately Calla (1999), a softly- hallucinated music reminiscent of Ry Cooder's soundtracks and Calexico's desert ambience. Seattle's Red Stars Theory (2) turned Built To Spill's brainy trance upside down, emphasizing the trance, on their mostly-instrumental albums But Sleep Came Slowly (1997) and especially Life In A Bubble Can Be Beautiful (1999), which fused psychedelic, chamber and country music.

In 1975 Palo Alto guitarist William Ackerman (1) coined the term "new- age music" and founded a record label, Windham Hill, to promote atmospheric instrumental acoustic music. New-age music was thus born as a reaction to rock music. Rock music was loud and noisy, expressing a teenage spirit. New-age music was quiet and melodic, expressing an adult mood. New-age music had no vocalist, no drums and no electric guitar. New-age music was, first and foremost, a synthesis. It was a synthesis of cultures (high and low), moods (upbeat, ecstatic, melancholy, spiritual), genres (folk, electronic, jazz, classical, psychedelic), formats (song, symphony, suite, jam) and lifestyles (western and eastern). Since each of these components had existed for decades (if not centuries), new-age music pre-existed itself. The most obvious ancestor of new-age music is classical music itself. Despite the aristocratic way it was presented in the symphony halls and opera houses, classical music had included "mood" instrumental music from the very beginning.

The most significant event of the USA music scene at the turn of the decade was the folk revival. Launched in 1958 by the Kingstone Trio's Tom Dooley, and celebrated in 1959 at the first Newport Folk Festival, the folk revival introduced a sense that music was meant to be more than mere entertainment. Within a few years, its boundaries had expanded dramatically. Joan Baez turned folk music into an austere form on Joan Baez 2 (? 1961 - oct 1961). Bob Gibson was one of the very early folk-singers who set to renovate the art of folk music. His best album, At The Gate Of Horn (apr 1961 - ? 1961), a live performance with Bob Camp, predates the intimate style of folk-rock by a few years. Ian (Tyson) and Sylvia (Fricker) were perhaps the most soulful, predating folk-rock with Ian's Four Strong Winds (1963) and Sylvia's You Were On My Mind (1964, the We Five's hit). Folk music evolved rapidly into something more profound and more complex, as proven by Lee Hazlewood's concept albums, Trouble Is A Lonesome Town (? 1963 - nov 1963) and The N.S.V.I.P.'s (? 1964 - ? 1964), that consist of bleak stories about misfits and losers.

  • Elephant in the Room: the Singing of Robbie Basho
The Elephant In The Room: The Singing of Robbie Basho An essay by Rob Caldwell Published by Grass-Tops Recording It’s been called “demanding”, “eerie”, “unsettling”, “overzealous”; over the years people have struggled to find the right word to describe Robbie Basho’s unique singing style. Reviewers tend to focus on his innovative guitar playing, and rightly so. Melding East Indian ragas, Scottish airs, Japanese and Persian music (just for starters), his guitar was a vehicle for virtual world travel. Basho, who died in 1986, was also influential on contemporaries such as Leo Kottke, John Fahey and William Ackerman - some of the giants of the instrument. His sound can still be heard in the newer generation of artists expanding the range of the acoustic guitar, such as James Blackshaw, William Tyler, Nick Jonah Davis, and Sean Smith. In retrospect, his fellow ground breaking acoustic guitarists (Kottke, Fahey, Davey Graham, Peter Lang, Peter Walker, Sandy Bull, etc.) were not known for their vocals, if they sang at all. The guitar was the highlight and the drawing card, the tool they used to make their names. Even Kottke, who has sung the most of all of them, referred to his own voice as sounding like “geese farts on a muggy day.” In short, many have been influenced by Robbie Basho’s guitar playing, but none his voice. Yet no discussion of Robbie Basho can be complete without a mention of that unusual singing voice; that “elephant in the room”. It’s something you can’t get around once you start delving into his music.
