If they start to have only 2 or 3 teams per category I would look at an open category. The excitement of the 3 winning teams was awesome and in an open I believe you would only be giving this to 1 team and we need these kids to want to continue curling into senior curling.

Boys singles Jaxson McIvor Eston

Girls doubles Jayden Lawson Chantelle Cooper Beechy

Boys Doubles Noah Marteens Kane Dube Rosetown

Mixed Doubles Hunter Bergerman Lian Wood Rosetown Financial Statement Nothing to report. I assume we had to rent the space at LCBI which I also assume someone else was taking care of that. Recommendations It does not make sense for a school to host at someone else's school. Especially when that school will have no representation at the event. OHS hosting at LCBI makes even less sense than Elrose hosting at Rosetown or Eston at Kindersely because in both of those situations those schools would have staff members at the event who could assist with set up as well as running the event. I understand that it's great to run the event at 4 court schools, however if Outlook is asked to host again, I will gladly do it but it will be at my own gym which only has 3 courts. If you need extra courts I have ran the elementary gym at the same time before with great success. I know there will be the odd coach who will complain about being in 2 places at once but there are negatives to each of the hosting scenarios offered in Outlook so it shouldn't really matter. That aside LCBI was very helpful and accommodating, which was very much appreciate. Secondly I recommend that SHSAA creates a place on their website where coaches, parents, players can easily and consistently access information regarding events. What we do now is an email version of a calling tree where one person sends it to one then the they send it on and so forth. If SHSAA had a tab on their site (or we use a social media platform - my preference) where everyone knows the information will be every year then anyone who wants to know something can just look it up and access it. For example I used instagram for hosting disctricts. After a few years of using a social media platform coaches and players would get used to it and then they could have instant access to info about any event. It would take a few years to make the transition but once it was done getting information to people (such as event changes, cancelations of events, changes to who's attending, local information, etc.) would be instantaneous for coaches, players and parents. Imagine canceling an event due to weather (which we have all done) at midnight before the event and the stresses that come with making sure everyone gets the information in time. With a social media platform, anyone involved can sign up to follow the event and get push notifications regarding updates and changes. Therefore if there is any change to the current plan it is instantaneously sent to the people who need to know. IF someone is sitting at home at 7am wondering if they should venture out in the bad weather (because they haven't heard otherwise) then they could check social media and instantly get the ok or don't bother going information they are wondering. If you want to see how I was using instagram with my event search #wcjrbadmintondistricts I know initially there will be people who say that not everyone uses instagram (for example) but I believe that if people want to be part of an event they will get the app that is required. IE my child's teacher uses a remind app to send parents info. I am interested in knowing what's going on, so I downloaded the app and signed up and anyone interested in their child part taking in an SHSAA event should be doing the same. For those really against learning a social media platform like instagram I can guarantee that their child has instagram and access to the info. Which is why I went with instagram for my info in the first place. I know that every student with a phone has an instagram account and therefore a parent can quickly ask their child to look it up and get the info that way. Aside from the benefits of pre event information distribution social media also gives parents who are at home or working during the event, real time updates. They can estimate when their kid will be playing so they could come and watch, or guess when they will be done to pick them up. There are several minor sports groups in Outlook who have gone this route and I think the SHSAA needs to do the same because it makes everyone's job easier.

Name of Activity Track and Field Commissioner Miles Bennett Location of Contest Outlook Dates of Contest May 26/27 Participating Teams All schools in WC Results All results can be found on the West Central website at www.wcshsaa.ca Financial Statement Two gates were run at either end of area. WISC – Friday, June 9/10 at U of S • $50 registration which includes meals and accommodation. Will be capped at 100 participants.

Concussion Protocol • Has been re-written – there are more tools for concussion management • December 6 – Sport Canada and the Governor General will be partnering to raise awareness and develop a national strategy Service and Merit Awards – start thinking about it now Discussion Items: • There is confusion about ‘Junior’ team and ‘Senior’ teams – be sure you know the difference when entering tournaments and accepting teams into your tournaments • Reporting enrolments – all students in your schools (10-12) are eligible except for those who have used up their eligibility • There is interest from Special Olympics for a category being added to SHSAA track. The executive is examining if this or a Para event(s) could be added. • Remembrance Day – next year it is on a Saturday – executive will come up with a protocol

The intent behind the badminton intent to compete form is good. However after having used the badminton intent to compete form this year it is clear we need to make some changes. What we want is to make sure athletes do not drop out in-between competitions. This is indeed problem, but the intent policy in its current form has created a lot of problems and needs to be changed. The way it is now we will stop some of our better athletes who are multi-sport athletes from competing at the district and perhaps the regional level because they have a prior commitment in another sport on provincial week end. Why should they not be able to compete to the highest level they are able? We are lowering the quality of play by removing some of our better athletes and the number of players competing is reduced. This seems counterproductive, shouldn’t we be striving for the reverse? We want more kids to take part and compete in badminton, not fewer. Once this policy get well known by the kids I can see fewer kids competing because they cannot take part in playoffs. Why would they even bother to play if they cannot take part in playoffs? With fewer kids going to rural schools the problem of kids being involved in many things and having many commitments is not going to get better it will only get worse. Shouldn’t we realize this is our reality and help the kids who are involved in many activities rather than exclude them? The problem is kids dropping out between competitions or unexpectedly. Often they spring it on their coach at the last minute. We need to stop that from happening. My recommendation is that if we are going to have a policy we allow the kids to compete to their highest level they can but they must declare that they cannot go on to the next level of competition before the previous competition starts so that all competitors know the situation. If we need a sanction we do so if they drop out before the next competition they said they would compete in. In our case our boys singles is our best player, the hardest working and most coachable player on our team, never missed a practice all year, and because he might have baseball on provincial badminton weekend he might never get to enter playoffs? How is that fair? Our school and I feel strongly enough about this that we might enter him anyways and pay the fine. Will Johnson Biggar Central School

7.4.1 Jr. Basketball

Girls: Host: Eatonia - Commissioner: Shelley Follensbee Winner: Kenaston

Boys: Host Site: Davidson – Commissioner: Garrett Bailey Winner: Davidson

Concerns: OHS Jr. Boys and Girls basketball teams dropped out of the East Section semi final on short notice North Sectional was played on the Monday before Districts. This meant that the advancing team would have played four games in in two days.

7.4.2 Jr. Curling Host: Eston – Commissioner: Kevin Mastel Winners: Boys: Eston Girls: Rosetown Mixed: Rosetown Concerns: Very disorganized at the school level. Even if there is a remote possibility of having a team schools must register a team at the beginning of the year. It is easier to contact schools and ask if they have a team then for teams to show up at the last minute. You can always get a refund. See email from RCHS curling coach regarding championship.

7.4.2.1 Jr Curling Revision. Lance puts forth a motion to change WC Jr curling from Boys, Girls and Mixed to Boys, Girls and Open-Mixed (3 & 1). Second Sue. Discussion: Open for juniors mean 3 of one gender and 1 of the other or 4 of any gender. Definition for Open: 3 of one gender and 1 of the other. Vote: All in Favor, Opposed Mitch

7.4.3 Sr. Curling Host: Kyle – Commissioner: Laura Grassing

Winners: Boys: Kindersley Girls: Dinsmore Mixed: Rosetown Concerns: Biggar Sr. Boys did not show up for Districts. Teams are registered through the SHSAA and if your school has an eligibility form filed then you are entered.

District Venue Discussion: With only being able to use 4 court facilities (which I feel we want to keep) for Districts, there are 2 in the north. I would like the rotation to be KCS, BCS2, RCHS, LCBI (regardless of who hosts OHS or LCBI). 8.1.2 Track & Field – Venue: Outlook Commissioner: Miles Bennett

Sectional Dates and Hosts Sites: West Sectional – May 16th @ Biggar East Sectional – May 17th @ Davidson

• Should 6 Track athletes advance from Sectionals instead of 4? • Should schools be charged for Sectional numbers? • Sectional Meets are getting very large and field events are overlapping and races are getting behind. Should we look at the following options: o Limit the number of entries per school o Limit the number of throw or jumps to 3 or 4 o Lengthen the schedule and finish later o Limit the number of attempts for Bantam

Name of Activity Junior Curling Districts Commissioner Kevin Mastel Location of Contest Eston Dates of Contest March 3 and 4 Participating Teams Boys - Eston, Plenty, Lucky Lake, Biggar Girls - Rosetown, Outlook, Biggar, Kyle Mixed - Rosetown, Outlook, Dinsmore Results Listed in order 1st to 4th Boys - Eston, Plenty, Lucky Lake, Biggar Girls - Rosetown, Outlook, Biggar, Kyle Mixed - Rosetown, Outlook, Dinsmore Financial Statement Gate made $230 Ice Rental $300 Recommendations I think this system works better than an open as long as you can get 4 teams in the categories. If they start to have only 2 or 3 teams per category I would look at an open category. The excitement of the 3 winning teams was awesome and in an open I believe you would only be giving this to 1 team and we need these kids to want to continue curling into senior curling.

Miles As per our conversation of this AM regarding junior district curling, I’m sending a suggestion that may make the process more equitable. I’ve seen the majority of the teams that are going to Eston Mar 3 and 4. There are some decent teams and some weaker teams but because of the lack of teams all get to go. Since, at the junior level they can’t proceed further than districts would it be less cumbersome to have a bonspiel, regardless of gender. Take the 11 or 12 teams and have an A and B event guarantee 3 games. The worst case scenario would be 6 games in 2 days which isn’t terrible. As we discussed,if it was more like an open event the towns that maybe had 3 boys and a girl or vice versa could enter as well. I really liked the mixed double idea you suggested as well. Be nice for the towns that might have a boy and a girl but no one else. If you can give this some thought and if you think it’s a good idea maybe bring it up at your next round of meetings. Regards Darby Freistadt
