Helton Creek Falls Distance: 0.4 miles roundtrip Difficulty: Easy to moderate Type of trail: Out and back Location: From Gainesville Highway, turn on Helton Creek Road, travel 2.2 miles to small parking area. Road is primarily gravel.

Just south of Vogel State Park, the Helton Creek Falls trail offers another series of two waterfalls in which you get a more up close and personal view. This is the expedited version of the rstfi mentioned trail, as it just takes two-tenths of a mile to experience both falls. The lessened distance of the trail is evident from the parking area, as you can already glimpse a view of the falls through the trees as you park. Henton Creek Stairs Upon arrival, signs advise hikers to be cautious with the abrupt changes in grade and the slick rocks near the falls. Walking through the woods of the Chattahoochee National Forest, hikers will first see a series of steps leading down to the left whereyou can view the lower falls. The waters of this section slide down asmooth, angled rock and come to a calm pool of water. Coming back to the main trail and heading left and upward will take hikers to the viewing platform of the upper waterfall. This fall is the larger, grand finale of the two and cascades water over a massive outcropping of rock. The waters remain briefly in an perup pool before spilling downstream into the lower falls. This hike is great for those who are looking for a brief afternoon adventure that is just off the beaten path enough to be sheltered by the natural beauty of the national forest.

Chatuge Trail Distance: 1-mile roundtrip Difficulty: Easy Type of trail: Loop Location: Lake Chatuge Recreation Area.

For someone looking for a nice gentle jaunt to get the blood flow- ing and a healthy dose of nature, the Chatuge Trail may be the one for you. This picturesque hike takes you along the perimeter fo a small peninsula that explores a scenic forest to one side and sweeping views of the lake on the other. This hike is a perfect opportunity for those who want to get their families outdoors more. You can bring your dog on a leash, have small kids along for the venture, pack a fishing pole and even take advantageof the boat ac- cess whether you have a ski boat or a canoe. Best of all, the loop hike is level the entire way, with no big gains or drops in elevation. The loop begins at one side of the parking area and nishesfi at the other, creating a one-time hiking experience where travelers do not have to hike any of the same sections twice. Byron Herbert Reece State Memorial Trail High Shoals Falls Distance: 1.4 mile roundtrip Difficulty: Moderate to difficult Type of trail: Out and back, access trail to the and Freeman Trail Location: Parking area off Gainesville Highway in Blairsville. One of the most popular hiking destinations in Towns and Union County, the Byron Herbert Reece State Memorial Trail is one of few pathways with near endless potential, you could get all the way to Maine if you wanted to since it intersects with the longest trail of the east, the Appalachian Trail. As you make your way up to the trail’s convergence with the AT, the hike challenges you time and time again. It starts off with a fairly constant and gradual climb beforegoing into a steeper descent. Soon the trail levels out and allows you to regain the joy of the hike before heading into a second and final steep section. The trail tapers off as you find your way through nature’s stepping stones. You’ll get a mountain view from the top, but certainly not a panoramic one. There is plenty more expansive view just a short distance farther, if you choose to continue forth. This is the one of the many beauties of this memorial trail – it gets you to a point where you have the opportunity to venture a bit farther to the left or right. Of all the mentioned hikes above, the Byron Herbert Reece State Memorial Trail allows for more opportunity for adventure and give you the ability to decide the length, difficulty and your overall time spent on a trail. n

Sorghum Festival celebrates 50 years of helping community

ore than 50 years ago, a few people had a meeting to figure out a way to help needy kids. M Being a farmer, J.R. Bridges knew the idea of selling sor- ghum syrup would work. The group rented property from the govern- ment to plant the sorghum crop, then once it was ready plowed it and took it to Bridges’ home to make the syrup. For that first Sorghum Festival in 1969, the men dressed in overalls and straw hats, while the ladies wore long dresses and bonnets. They sold syrup on the square around the Union County Courthouse to people driving through. “Everybody enjoyed it,” Bridges said. “It’s just good to raise money to help somebody who needs help.” They stayed with the idea of selling syrup to help families and the community – they couldn’t think of anything else that would be as good for raising funds – altering it as needed over the years. Then one year, it became the largest fundraiser in Georgia. “We just grew from there,” Bridges said. The activities moved to Fort Sorghum in the early 1970s. It re- mained there until 2008, when it moved to Meeks Park. In 1995, the Georgia House of Representatives recognized the im- pact of the event and passed House Resolution 156, which named it the Official Sorghum Festival of Georgia. The two-weekend festival in October attracts 15,000people to Meeks Park, and all funds raised still go back to the community.
