Slobodan Jovanovic was born in Novi Sad in 1869. He completed his pri- mary and secondary education in Belgrade. Having obtained his law degree from the Faculty of Law in Geneva (1887–1890), he spent a year at the Uni- versity of Paris researching Public law, after which he worked for five years in the Serbian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He became an Associate Professor of State Law at the Great School of Belgrade before he was 28. In 1905 he became a Full Professor at the Faculty of Law of the University of Belgrade, where he worked until retirement in 1940. He was the Law Faculty Dean (1904/1905 and 1909/1910) and the University of Belgrade Rector (1913/1914 and 1920/1921). In 1905 he was elected a Corresponding Member, and in 1908 a Full Member of the Serbian Royal Academy which he also presided over from 1928 till 1931. He was one of the co-founders and a president of the Serbian Cultural Club. In 1941 he was appointed Deputy Prime Minis- ter of the Yugoslav Government. When Yugoslavia surrendered, he left the country with other members of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia’s Government, which afterwards turned out to be for good. During the war he was a Prime Minister and then a Deputy Prime Minister of the Government-in-Exile. In 1946 he was condemned in absence, sentenced to twenty years of imprison- ment with hard labour, and deprived of his civil rights. This conviction was declared invalid by the District Court of Belgrade in 2007. Professor Slobodan Jovanovic passed away in London on December 12 1958. In a 60-year-period he created an extraordinarily rich academic and literary work encompassing Slobodan Jovanovic (1869–1958) legal theory, constitutional law, history, political sociology and literature. n
