NEWSLETTER 113 (April 18, 2013) NEWSLETTER 113 (April 18, 2013) SPb CHESS FED WINS THE RUSSIAN NATIONAL TEAMS CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 The team of SPb Chess Fed won the Russian National Teams Chess Chamiponship 2013 with 11 match points and better tie-break than the second team in the final ranking Malakhit Chess Club. The third place was won by Yugra with 10 match points. The Championship was held from 07-13 April, 2013 in Loo, Russia. Chief Arbiter of the tournament, organized by the Russian Chess Federation, was Khasin Alexander. Team composition of the winners was: GMs Peter Svidler (ELO-2747), Nikita Vitiugov (ELO-2712), Perez Leinier Dominguez (ELO-2723), Sergei Movsesian (ELO- 2695), Zahar Efimenko (ELO-2697), Vadim Zvjaginsev (ELO-2658), Ildar Khairullin (ELO-2660) and Maxim Matlakov (ELO-2653). Final Ranking after 7 rounds – first 10 positions Rk. The event took place during the press conference given by IBM Bulgaria, on the occasion of the arrival to Bulgaria of the "demo center on wheels" - IBM System Technology Truck and is a result of the good cooperation between IBM Bulgaria and the Bulgarian Chess Federation. © Ecuonline.net Page 2 IBM Bulgaria is a great friend of the Bulgarian chess and welcomes the program "Chess in Schools" of the European Chess Union. In the presence of the Country Sales Leader of IBM Bulgaria Mr. Kalin Dimtchev, foreign guests and journalists, Matej Petkov and IBM’s computer competed in Scottish Gambit with blitz time control. The game was commented by the Executive Director of the Bulgarian Chess Federation, Mr. Nikolay Velchev, who was an official guest of this high tech event. "We can see increasingly clearly how active technologies enter into the business, making it more dynamic and even more aggressive. But they also changed the way we live our lives, leading us to a smarter future. Future, which is based on the technologies, which we will present during the exhibition, as well as all innovations and solutions of IBM, created in the centennial history of the company." - said Mr. Dimtchev during the press conference. The journalists and guests had the opportunity to learn about the benefits and capabilities of the IBM’s server systems and software in a real environment. Among them are Pure Flex Systems, Power Systems, Blade Center, Smart Applications, Smart Cloud solutions and more. This is the first time the exhibition truck IBM STG Truck has been in Bulgaria. It is impressive in size - weighing 36 tons, 17 meters long and 16 meters in diameter and possesses impressive technological features. Its construction took six months, and has now travelled more than 350,000 kilometers and performed in more than 120 countries worldwide. © Ecuonline.net Page 3 GM TAMIR NABATY WINS ISRAELI CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 GM Tamir Nabaty won the Israeli Chess Championship 2013 with the final result of 6.5 points out of maximum 9. GM Ilia Smirin finished second on a half point distance from the winner, whereas GM Victor Mikhalevski was third with the same result. The championship was held from April 06-14, 2013 in Acre.     Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2017 Monday 23 January - Thursday 2 February 2017 Round 3 Report: Thursday 26 January 2017 - by John Saunders (@JohnChess) How to Draw with Your Dad Nine players – Mickey Adams (England), Nikita Vitiugov, Vadim Zvjaginsev (both Russia), Sam Shankland (USA), Eduardo Iturrizaga (Venezuela), Emil Sutovsky (Israel), Maxime Lagarde (France), Kacper Piorun (Poland) and Ju Wenjun (China) – share the lead on 3/3 after another tough round of chess in the Tradewise Gibraltar Masters at the Caleta Hotel in Gibraltar. The elite 2700+ players are still finding it very hard to impose themselves on the group of players rated 200 or 300 points below. Veselin Topalov picked up this point in his master class on Wednesday, stating that these days there is little or no difference in the quality of the first 10 to 15 opening moves between 2300-rated players and the elite. So the big names have to work harder to get their points, perhaps adopting a Carlsen-style approach, avoiding long, forcing lines in the opening and outplaying their opponents in endgames. This has been exemplified in Gibraltar by the only two 2700+ rated players to figure in the group on 3/3, namely Adams and Vitiugov, who have been grinding out the wins in long games. Mickey Adams ground out a long win against Bogdan-Daniel Deac (Romania) Perhaps the most enjoyable game for the audience in round three was the battle between Peter Svidler and Nitzan Steinberg. The 18th edition of one of the biggest tournaments in the ECU calendar took place in the Sports Palace in Minsk, with the participation of 400 players, who competed for the 1 NL JUNE 2017 EUROPEAN CHESS UNION prestigious title of the European Chess Champion and one of the 22 seats – tickets to the World Chess Cup 2018. The winner became Grandmaster Maxim Matlakov (RUS, 2714) who triumphed with 8.5 points. The Russian scored the same points as Baadur Jobava (GEO, 2713) and Vladimir Fedoseev (RUS, 2690), but thanks to better tiebreak criteria he became the new European Chess Champion, while the other two won silver and bronze respectively. The prize fund of 100 000 EUR, attracted the majority of the best European players including and many women players as well. The best ranked women players were WGM Olga Girya (RUS, 2476) and IM Elisabeth Paehtz (GER, 2474) with 6.5 points, and WGM Aleksandra Goryachkina (RUS, 2470) with 6 points. The best senior player was GM Zurab Sturua (GEO, 2555), the 2014 World and 2015 European Senior Chess Champion. The best players U18 were IM Haik M. Martirosyan (ARM, 2516), IM Aram Hakobyan (ARM, 2449), IM Kirill Shevchenko (UKR, 2491) and IM Alexey Sarana (RUS, 2472), all with 7 points.

Held in one section, there was a theoretical rating cutoff of 2200 USCF but a limited number of places were allotted for lower-rated players. Among the one hundred and thirty entrants were forty-three grandmasters and fourteen above 2700 (USCF). Four Canadians participated: GM Kaiqi Yang, GM Razvan Preotu, and from BC Andrew Xu and Veronica Guo. Dominguez (2 thousand 7 hundred and 55 Elo points) played with white pieces, and negotiated the split of point with Rodshtein after 103 moves of a Caro-Kann defense. The Cuban player defended the second board of the Russian club, and beat Beer Sheva of Israel 4.5- 1.5. For the Russian squad, there were wins for Sergei Movsesian, Maxim Matlakov and Ildar Khairullin, while Peter Svidler and Zahar Efimenko made draws. Turning to Basketball The Cuban women's basketball team, won in extra time 69-66 against their Canadian counterparts, in preparation for the World Basketball Championship, a clash which took place at the Lobete de Logrono municipal sport center, Spain. The Cubans, American champions in 2013, dominated the first quarter 19-7, but fell in the remaining three, with scorecards of 9-15,19-20 and 11-16. At the end of the 40 minutes of play there was a tie at 68 points. In the five additional minutes the Cubans dominated 11-8 to get a final score of 69-68. The best scorers for Cuba were Yamara Amargo, with 18 points, followed by Leidis Oquendo y Oyanaisis Gelis, with 15 and 11 points, respectively. The Cuban coach Alberto Zabala used in this challenge the 12 players who will represent the country in the World Cup in Turkey, which starts on Saturday 27th in the Turkish cities of Ankara and Istanbul.
