It has something for everyone! Dec 17, Jennifer Loiske rated it it was amazing. A book I wanted to savor instead of rushing into it without my mind elsewhere. Oh, boy! Did this book deliver! Sahara Foley has definitely brought something new and refreshing on the Arthurian tales. A well known legend has been mixed with a modern time. The truth about Excalibur has been questioned…what really happened? What did they leave out when the legend was born? Sahara Foley has turned the cup upside down and created something completely new and unique. Kudos for the author! Prepare to be stunned as this story will blow your mind! I am a romance reader and had a small concern about the fantasy world, but the synopsis of the story drew me. I'm happy that I chose it. Foley writes a story of intrigue, humor, magic, suspense, hilarity and romance that immediately drew my attention, keeping me from putting it down. After an accident, Arthur Merlin is left with supernatural powers that put fear in his friends and the desire of the government to control him. Something pulled him to England where he met Dr. Ruth Burns. Th Wow! They tear up the sheets. But, he is drawn to The Lady of the Lake and the legendary sword Excalibur which old stories say it lies at the bottom of the lake. You will enjoy the twists, turns, action, romance and supporting characters in The Secret of Excalibur. Foley brings to life the emotions, pain and joy of characters. You will feel as if you were watching the story develop before your eyes. The storyline flows well and the main character, and even the supporting characters, are well-developed. The end surprised and pleased me. Ms Foley is a talented writer. I look forward to reading her work again. May 28, C. A great twist on a popular legend. It was actually a one star review that prompted me to read this book, and I'm so gad I did. One thing I must say up front is that this book is set in the 's, so attitudes weren't as politically correct back then. It's actually refreshing to see a bit of good old fashioned male chauvinism The story is about a guy, Arthur Merlin, who possesses extraordinary, superhero like powers. There is a suggestion that the CIA tried to con A great twist on a popular legend. There is a suggestion that the CIA tried to control him, before he turns up at a institute in England. There he meets Ruth, a prickly lesbian doctor. I won't ruin it for you, but the fireworks between them form the core of a great book. I will admit that the first person POV took me a while to get used to, but after a couple of excellently written chapters I really enjoyed it. The Arthurian theme takes a huge twist at the end of the book, turning the whole legend on it's head, and I cannot wait for book two. There is a story here that needs to be told, and Sahara Foley is the one to tell it! Jun 30, Wendi Wilson rated it really liked it. This was a very unique and exciting take on the legend of Excalibur. A man, gifted with many amazing talents, is drawn to England from America where he teams up with a division of MI6 and meets a feisty lady with demons of her own. Romance, mystery, and humor all underscore this unimaginable adventure to discover the secrets of the Lady of the Lake. Just when you think you know where it's going, the story shifts and you're left clueless again. Make another prediction, and BAM! It shifts again and This was a very unique and exciting take on the legend of Excalibur. It shifts again and you're left reeling. I love that- when the story is unpredictable and exciting. My one negative- and it's a minor one- is the fact that our main character called his love interest "kid. The author is from the midwest, so it could be a regional thing that I don't understand. Overall, I really liked the story. I can't wait to see what happens next and have the sequel: "The Revenge of Excalibur" already lined up on my Kindle to start tomorrow! Great job! Aug 12, J. An Exciting and Adventurous Read! I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but it definitely exceeded my hopes! The story was interesting and kept driving forward. The tale was intelligent and fascinating, putting a new spin on an old legend. I applaud the author - well done! I was constantly surprised by the intriguing storyline. At first, I didn't much care for the arrogant Arthur Merlin, but by the end, I adored him. I thought Ruth and Daisy were admirable equals to Arthur and I liked the characters very much. I found I wanted to know more about them and I hope there's a sequel in the works! I definitely recommend this novel to all readers. There are moments of steamy romance and hilarious banter mixed with a spectrum of emotions, action, mystery, and suspense. The author did a beautiful job of blending old lore with modern concepts that opened a universe of possibilities! I loved it! When Arthur Merlin turns up at a facility in England, claiming to have strange powers, Ruth isn't really impressed. However, when it becomes clear he's not your average person, she finds herself falling for the charming man. The two embark on a journey to find out the mystery behind something Ruth saw many years ago. The result is something they both are unprepared for. Although I'm not a huge fan of first person, present tense, I did enjoy this novel. I liked the characters and there was a smatt When Arthur Merlin turns up at a facility in England, claiming to have strange powers, Ruth isn't really impressed. I liked the characters and there was a smattering of humor though out the text. It's admirable that Miss Foley is taking the work of her husband forward for publication. I did feel a bit disappointed at the end because I wanted to know what happened afterwards! I hope there is a sequel in the pipeline. Jun 06, Ju Ephraime rated it did not like it. Lots of grammatical and spelling errors in this book, i. Sentences are run-ons, i. She writes. There were several written this way. I could go on and on. I wanted to scream. A complete waste of my money! Save yours! Sep 23, K. This is a fascinating take on the story of Excalibur and not at all what I expected. It's well written and quirky and I enjoyed it. The plot constantly twists and throws you off the scent. The tension in the book is palpable and I was definitely terrified at points, especially during the underwater scenes. The ending was wacky and deeply sci-fi in the finish which I should've seen coming, but didn't. I will definitely read this author again. Dec 14, Janet E. Bright and amusing, an easy read. Inverted legends For young adults and those young at heart. Jan 18, C. Mandara rated it it was amazing. Loved this magical tale Jun 24, Jackie rated it really liked it. The Secret of Excalibur by Sahara Foley is a fantasy with humor throughout. I never laughed so hard as when the protagonist, Arthur Merlin, ends up landing on his backside in a pan of hot grease and two frying fish and then crashes into the fire pit. I stopped where I was and read this chapter twice and was laughing so hard I cried. I found the dialog of each character perfect. Not only did the dialog move the story forward, it is astounding how Foley can comes up with the perfect verbiage for each character. Not one character sounded the same as another. Characters pushed and pulled at one another according to their personalities, ideals, wants and needs. This story is told from the mind of the male protagonist. While many people try to write a character of the opposite sex, I found nothing to fault in the way Arthur Merlin lives through the plot. His attitude is very male, and all the characters personalities are perfectly defined and honest. Even the paranormal events in this story feel real. Foley must have a raucous attitude when writing. I picture her laughing when writing what she has conjured for a story. I cannot read another book right now, not until both the extreme hilarity and the shock of this story wears off. The Secret of Excalibur is a delightful entwining of Arthurian mythos, a modern Merlin, and clever supporting characters. For readers who are fans of King Arthur stories, The Secret of Excalibur is a satisfying blend of the legend with a modern day wizard. Be warned, because the real sword under the lake is nothing like the legend. The story idea behind this book was very interesting. Learning about the history of the Lady in the Lake and the Excalibur was entertaining. The writing flowed well. The main character, Arthur had some amazing powers there! I liked Ruth, the love interest, a lot and would have loved to have read some chapters from her POV instead of other smaller characters. It would have been nice to hear her side of the story and what she was feeling throughout. I did agree with other reviewers that the first half of the book had a lot of back story, explaining, chatting, history, and it slowed the pace. Some scenes I thought were maybe just filler scenes. The plot twist at the end was not expected at all and kept me on the edge of my seat wanting to get to the the last few chapters as fast as I could. It was an interesting twist from how the book started. The only thing i didnt like was how Arthur manipulated Ruth throughout the book. She had a sad, horrible past and he didnt seem to care. I'm not sure if Ruth really did fall in love with him in 5 days or it was his mind control that made her, but with her traumatic past and how she chose a different romantic path for her life, I didnt like that he disregarded that from day one. It turned me off from him for the rest of the book. What he did to her at the end was unkind, regardless of his reasons. Ruth was nothing but loyal no matter what he asked of her. Not sure how she was okay with that. I felt that was unbelievable. All in all a good read for those into myths and legends. He realizes an unseen force is weakening his powers and enlists the help of Commander Dobie to investigate the mysterious undersea cave that appears to be operated by dangerous enemies. She has created a sci-fi theme that is intriguing, and the main characters - who are not afraid to speak their minds or express their feelings - narrate it. She writes very nicely and allows all her characters to participate in the drama, whether it is a big scene or a minor one. This strengthened the story, which has witty dialogue and adventure. Ruth our heroine is fascinated by the Arthurian legends, so when she and our hero, Arthur Merlin, need to get away from the city, she takes him to the St. George Inn on lake St. George, where the sword is said to have been cast. Could the strange psychic sensations Arthur feels coming from the lake have anything to do with the famous sword? What did Ruth and her classmates really see out on the lake? The two set out to discover what mysteries the lake really holds, occasionally stopping for some lovemaking. Foley manages this modern tale in classic form with the lovely heroine, a superhero, who is also very human, a few incompetent government paper-pushers and even the local buffoons. A fantastic adventure worthy of all of classic Tomb Raider tales. I loved it and can't wait for the movie. Can anyone say Scarlett J and Jason S? Sometimes I feel like I'm listening to a movie script, but the plot lines are pretty good. What other book might you compare The Secret of Excalibur to and why? Not sure. He does a really good job of separating the voices so you know who's talking. He just pronounces some words very weird. He adds er onto any word that ends in a, i. Nina becomes 'Neener'. Was The Secret of Excalibur worth the listening time? I think so, I wasn't able to predict everything that was going to happen. Any additional comments? Slow down and take a breath. It felt like it was rushed. If it wasn't for the narrator abilities to create different voices for all the charters introduced, I would have not given Performance 3 stars. Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you? Nope, this was a fun read. I loved the story and who cares if there were so much sex involved. I think if I had those super power abilities I would have done the same things. Here is another book that I am glad that i was given a copy to review. This is not what I normally would have read and I am so glad that I did. Was the story polish and smooth? No, but it didn't need to be because this was a fun read and if you are looking for a book to take your mind off the hustle and bustle this is the one. This is the kind of book I would love to read when I travel. What made the experience of listening to The Secret of Excalibur the most enjoyable? Listening to the book being told in audio form. Burns, and because she's interesting. How does this one compare? The introduction of someone having the ability of invisibility, the Almost Mode. A fantastic audio book. So someone who likes space and aliens should like this book. Maybe, but I'd want to hear a sample recording first. She was too stilted for my taste. I am very torn about this book, I liked about half of it, then it went crazy over the top. I don't want to give away too much but most of the last half I was left scratching my head. I liked that it seemed like Excalibur was sentient, I thought that was a neat twist. I didn't like that Ruth, who was in lesbian relationships dropped her knickers for Arthur nearly immediately; who was practicing psychic "sexual" healing on her I know this wasn't set exactly in the "modern" times, late s but still. I would say to give this book a chance if you like Science Fiction, you might end up really enjoying it. The Secret of Excalibur by Sahara Foley is a wonderful fantastical tale of the infamous sword, but set during modern times - or least in the 's. The story centers on Arthur Merlin, a once ordinary guy, who possesses superpowers like teleportation and pyrokinessis. Trying to make sense of his new found powers, he travels to the Institute of Psychic Research in England and there he meets Dr. Ruth Burns. Besides being an expert in psychic powers, she is also an expert on tales of Excalibur and "The Lady of the Lake" - the higher being who supposedly gave King Arthur his sword in a time of great need. Ruth and Arthur have an instant attraction to each other that quickly leads to earth shattering sex I'm not sure what sex had to do with story, but there are several relatively short sex scenes, some of which are comically written and thoroughly enjoyable. Together Arthur and Ruth travel to Lake George - the place where Excalibur and the Lady of the Lake stories supposedly originated - where they find the answers they were seeking. There are a few plot twists that caught me off guard in addition to hints of Excalibur having a mind of its own similar to the "Sword of Gryffindor" of the Harry Potter stories. I listened to the Audible version of this book narrated by by Lynn Roberts who did an admirable job. She clearly differentiated between male and female voices and changed the tempo in the performance when warranted. I received a copy of this audio in exchange for an unbiased review. Simply put, I highly recommend this audiobook! This was a great tale, and one that sounds like there might be another adventure waiting to happen. I know that I did not get enough of Arthur. I also want to know if he still has Ruth's little habit of patting people to console them. It was such a tickle every time he noticed it. I loved the voice of Lynn Roberts. His way of having each character have their own sound, with all of the different accents made it very fun to listen to. The only reason I hesitated to give him 5 stars was that I felt at times like it was read too fast, without small pauses or breaks between sentences. Some of the paragraphs felt like one long run-on sentence. But other than that, I really did enjoy Roberts way of tackling this tale. All in all, I thank you for the adventure Sahara, and I am excited to see, what comes next! This story starts on an odd note and then proceeds right into the bizarre. I was unable to put it down! Somehow I expected this to be a time travel story where the lead character found the sword and it took him back to King Arthur's time. I kept looking for the find but it was not there. Instead I found an excellent narrative about a man with psychic powers trying not to be controlled while also following his own code. This novel was a little more sexually explicit than I prefer but it did fit with the final story line. Overall a well written story that is engaging and fast paced. The voices fit the characters and wer well defined. Don't be shy, you'll love this one if you like modern day tales with the Arthurian legend. We start with an American in England with all the possible gifts of the mind. Why is he there? What does he want? How will he keep from being controlled? What does Excaliber have to do with him? While this was a fun book it seemed like it more evolved as the author wrote it than that if followed a planned outline to the finish. Some of the plot lines seemed to change and the story progressed. It was definitely worth listening to. I was given this audiobook in exchange for an honest review. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and found the story thankfully different. If he was using an American accent all ok but the switching to female, English and back again was excruciating. With the help of Dr. Burns and Commander Dobie, we uncover the secrets of the lake, but they're more than anyone imagined. Any additional comments? This is a tale mixing legend and fantasy with a modern twist of super hero with different kinds of powers. The author delivers a good story with plenty of plots going on throughout. The writing was straightforward and smooth. I really enjoyed the characters and supporting characters. Great story of Excalibur. Definitely not what you'd expect! I loved it! I like brainless over-the-top action adventure stories. That is why in a fit of madness I bought three Andy McDermott books at the same time. Most writers improve. That left me with this book just sitting there on the coffee table… baiting me, taunting. Perhaps I should have put the money towards a root canal—woulda been more fun. I could almost forgive the sophomoric writing if some of the ideas and plot devices were interesting. But no he recycled every thriller writer in print. Andy, oh Andy, you should witch to comic books; that is were your audience is. Keep the writing at a seventh grade level and crank them out. View 1 comment. May 30, Mike rated it it was amazing Shelves: exploding-helicopters. And the non-stop action adventure continues. I love this series. One thing though, if you're looking for a deep novel, you won't find it here, this is pure unadulterated thrill ride. Seriously, this is nothing more than an action movie in book form. It's easy to see who the bad guy is from almost the very beginning, the twists and turns are usually expected, but I'm glad to say that the final twist was one I didn't see coming at all. I really liked this book, I really like this series. I know I s And the non-stop action adventure continues. I know I said it above, but if you're reading this series for a deeper understanding of the world that came before us, the deeper cultures of the previous societies and for a meaningful insight into the world as we know it; you're reading it for the wrong reason. The reason I love this series is because things blow up, especially helicopters. There should be a memorial made for all the helicopters lost to the hands of Andy McDermott because he really likes to blow them up, constantly. I thought the book was very good. Action, adventure, excitement, betrayal, everything I've come to suspect from Andy McDermott. I've already started the next book, and I look forward to many more pointless explosions to come. I have long been a fan of Arthurian legend, so I thought this mystery of trying to find Excalibur was neat. Unfortunately, the sword was found halfway through the book, and the rest of the story was devoted to Nina and Chase being pursued by people who wanted to take the sword. Too many descriptions of weapons and secret hideouts. I would have preferred more of the story be devoted to the clues and historic secrets that led to the finding of Excalibur. View 2 comments. While I'm sure in the author's mind it's a necessary view into the relationship development, the actual writing in Hercules was so shallow and extreme in emotion and invective that it became offputting, and in fact disctracted from the story. While I still stand by my commentary that the writing is not at a level of Cussler or Reilly, I will chalk book 2 up to the Sophomore slump, and give McDermott credit for obvious improvements and maturation in writing style and substance. In short: a better story, better writing, and better character development and interaction than his prior effort, and a more entertaining read. Feb 13, Helen rated it it was ok Shelves: reviewed , silly- in-a-bad-way. One star because it is actually well written and readable, and another because the author is from Halifax. I expected this to be cheesy, and probably sexist, but it was much worse than I thought it would be. The action sequences are daft and go beyond ridiculous, but that wouldn't bother me too much if the humour weren't so juvenile. The main protagonist Eddie has zero personality and his supposedly super smart fiancee Nina giggles her way through the book. Still, I managed to read it to the end One star because it is actually well written and readable, and another because the author is from Halifax. Still, I managed to read it to the end and there were fun moments when the history of King Arthur and the swords were brought into it. Jul 29, Joe Geesin rated it it was amazing. When myths and legends become reality, history gets rewritten. And that's exactly what happens here as Nina and Eddie chase Excalibur. From ancient texts to Russian underhand tactics, a dead scientist and a quadruple agent. Senior US involvement is hinted at in the final chapter, making for a subplot to bolster the next in the series. Which I'm now looking forward to. Aug 08, Jeffrey Lyons rated it it was amazing Shelves: action. This one sort of hearkens back to the first book when Nina discovered Atlantis. In this one, we learn that Nina has the ability to summon some sort of earth to help control Excaliber. I guess it is sort of like the old Arthurian myth that whomever can remove the sword from the stone is the true born King of England. Although Nina would be a Queen but that's besides the point. So yeah, there is an element of fantasy in this and many of McDermott's books. The two of them dodge many bullets and make it through some of the most painful falls, accidents, fights, etc. Though they do bicker a lot. It's part of the charm. But that is to be expected from this series. Really FAST page turners. They make me laugh. They make me out of breath! They entertain me to the nth degree. And I can get through them in days and usually stay up past my bedtime waiting to see what happens. Highly recommended for people who want to read a lot of action and suspend their belief in reality for a few days. Mar 09, Annette Gisby rated it liked it Shelves: thriller , suspense , legends. Not as good as the first in the series, the one about Atlantis, but still entertaining and a fast read. Apr 11, Kristen rated it really liked it Shelves: action-thriller , audiobooks , fun-fluffy-reads. If I wanted reality, I'd read non-fiction, but as someone who instantly fell in love with Indiana Jones from the second I met him, I am perfectly fine with a fictional hero like Eddie Chase doing stuff no REAL secret agent could probably pull off and still survive [although one just never knows what real secret agents are capable of - that's why they're SECRET, after all! This book, and in fact the whole series so far is just a big bucket of rip-roaring, no-holds-barred action and excitement. Is it escapist? Is it implausible? Maybe, don' care! This story is fast-paced, interesting, and filled with lots of exotic locations. The story is exciting, engaging, and interesting, especially if archaeology is your thing [it's definitely mine! I absolutely love a book that makes me laugh out loud, and this whole series has done that consistently. The tongue-in-cheek, sarcastic way Eddie, and to a lesser extent, Nina react to the often insane things that happen to them provides a really fun and funny counter-point to the high drama of the action in the plot, and helps to break up the tension in the life-and-death stuff. Personally, I love that that! I laughed out lough a LOT listening to this book. Most of that was the author's writing which is clever and snappy, but some of the credit has to go to the narrator, who absolutely NAILED both Eddie's accent and his black humour personality! The story in this book was an especially enjoyable one for me, as I am a fan of Arthurian legends, so the search for Excalibur was something I would be predisposed to be all-in for. Fortunately, the author knows his characters, and, I suspect, his audience. Is this a formula series? Yes, it is. But it's a formula that works! I know what to expect when I pick up a book in this series, and I enjoy what it delivers. I enjoy these books as exciting, escapist thrill-rides, with a side of sarcastic humour, and I absolutely intend to continue with this series! May 10, Ryan Burt rated it really liked it. I'm not exactly familiar with all things Arthurian or Monty Python, but I still read on knowing I was in for a ride, and I wasn't disappointed. It started with a tame setting, Nina about to meet Eddie's family, until a persuasive colleague of her parents' met her in Bournemouth. In this novel's setting, it was a significant historical find, and as always Nina disproves myth, turning it into truth. As long as they're alive, there's hope. The author's plot was a little rusty since I smelled something fishy about a generous benefactor. I hope the next novel is unpredictable. I may have a look at another one in this series like Valhalla Prophecy but it won't be anytime soon Reading about famous myths is even better. Excalibur carries a lot of stories attached that help the story. Couldn't help it had to watch "Excalibur" the film. All in all a good read. Feb 21, Philip Cook rated it really liked it. This was a non-stop action ride from start to finish. It is the third book in the series for Nina and Chase. As with all of McDermot's book's it is a fast action ride. This book is not a deep thinker but is rather a fast action thrill ride that take a Robert Ludlum basis and adds a twist of ancient legends. If you have already read this series and enjoyed it check out Matt Reilly he has a great series with Jack West Jr. Jul 16, Santiago Oleas rated it liked it. This is Andy McDermott's third book and at this point it seems like he's following a template and just switches out the legend and location but the story seems to be the same. If you have read the first two and are thinking of picking up this one, take a break before reading it so that you do not feel like you've seen it all before. Dec 23, Michael Davies rated it it was amazing. This is James Bond the Andy Mcdermott way, full of action and quirky one liners but not so sophisticated, and the character's tend to get a bit more then a bruis. If you like action movies then you will enjoy his books.
