Eat Well ... Thank a Farmer Another fair season is here and this year our theme is dedicated to our farmers! Farmers work hard year round planning, planting and harvesting and caring for our animals to provide nutritious and delicious food for us to eat. Working with respect for nature and animals present many challenges with weather, politics, consumers and prices - it's difficult to understand why we as farmers do what we do! Even so everyone can “Eat Well … Thank a Farmer!” Just like farmers and their planning, the Ripley Agricultural Society and its Board of Directors are working hard to bring another great fair for everyone to enjoy. We welcome new directors and ideas and suggestions to bring a variety of entertainment and events for our community to participate. We are so very thankful for all the sponsors who support our fair in so many ways! We encourage you to support them as well – a list of our current sponsors is in the back of this book. We are also thankful for the many grants that have come our way to support additional events and activities at the fair. We are thankful for our entertainment! Thursday evening for the Pre-teen Dance with Power Traxs. Friday Night under the Lights on the ball diamond, our arena displays – quilts, crops, flowers, and art and junior exhibits, Frog Jumping, the Garden Tractor Pull, Ambassador Competition, Pie and Cake Auction and our Midway has a new name All Canadian Entertainment – ACE. Advance Midway Coupons will be available at Pollock Electric. Saturday on stage are the Ballaghs, and on the grounds and in the arena Snippity the Clown, the Wildlife Mount Display, Mega Machines, Bervie Zoo, Mammoth Parade, 4-H Competitions, the light and heavy horse, poultry and T- Bone show and sale, and so much more! This year we have some new entertainment to add to our traditional activities! Lookup Theatre performing their aerial arts, The Ben Show for our children's entertainment and the Canadian Raptor Conservancy demonstrating their birds of prey are sure to entertain us and finish off the day dancing with the great music of the James Cameron Band! Of course we will have lots of great food from our Lions, Kinsmen, Women's Institute booth, and many others! We are thankful for our many, many volunteers who contribute their time and talents and our exhibitors who make our displays and shows the best that they can be. We hope you will thank them too! We are thankful to our dedicated secretary - Joyce Osborne and treasurer - Christine Heinisch! These ladies are always ready to answer questions and help us do our work to bring a great fair to you to enjoy. And finally we are thankful for you our fairgoers who come and support our endeavours. We welcome you to our community and hope you will enjoy our time with us to celebrate our 156th Ripley-Huron Fall Fair and “Eat Well… Thank a Farmer!” Paul Harris Ripley Agricultural Society President Fran Farrell Homecraft President 2 RIPLEY-HURON FALL FAIR PRIZE LIST TABLE OF CONTENTS Help Fence the Fair Partnership ...... The Society will not publish or provide addresses or phone numbers to anyone outside our organization. 5 Special rules pertaining to each particular class are printed at the beginning of each Class. These will be strictly enforced. 6 Every article exhibited must be the bona fide property of the exhibitor. 7 Each exhibitor may enter as many articles/exhibits as they wish, but only one article in each section, except where specified in Livestock classes.

The Ripley Agricultural Society’s ambassador program has provided me with many wonderful experiences over the last year. During the 2018 competition I had the opportunity to speak about our amazing community in front of all its members - regardless of my public speaking skills and experience at the time. This year I ve had a chance to meet many members of the agricultural society and witness firsthand how much work and thought goes into our fair, from meetings preparing for various events to driving the ambassador on a float in the many parades, the Ripley fall fair runs solely on its great volunteers and everyone’s love for our community. I look forward to taking part in the Miss Midwest and CNE programs this summer. The workshops are truly skill building opportunities and can certainly help you in any future endeavours and everyday life. Being in the parades throughout this past year has been so much fun. I was able to witness everyone’s excitement first hand when they read about our fair as we drove by. Ripley’s fair is one of the best in the area and it seems as though we are well recognized for that. I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to take part in all of these experiences and represent Ripley. Thank you Ripley Agricultural Society for a great year and another great fair.

Thank his wife for cooking, delivering meals, going for parts, Or moving fields all the while taking care of her usual jobs Thank a hired man for working endless hours On sleepless nights to ensure the crop comes off And thank his children who are ok with seeing him if just for a Brief moment while he eats his meals in the field Farming is a family business and it takes a sacrifice from all… So don't just thank a farmer…thank the family!

1ST PRIZE - POEM Fall Fair! Thursday is finally here, getting ready for tonight, the lights are going to be so bright. Only dancing all night but we plan to make it right, before we dream about tomorrow night. It’s Friday and nothing but rides on our minds, thinking of fast and furious of all kinds. We get to the gates early and don’t have to pay, which means more money for the very next day. We do up and down, round and round, We’re having so much fun off the ground! Times flies and it’s down to our last rides, it’s time to say our goodbye’s. Saturday morning and up early for the float, to pass out candies to all the Ripley folk. Candy apples, beef on a bun, treats for all, horses, cows and kids having a ball. Everyone is there to celebrate the day, A fun fair weekend, I think we can say!

Everywhere in the world, 4-H is based on a “Learn To Do By Doing” philosophy. At its core, 4-H is a grassroots organization of leaders building leaders. The four H's stand for head, heart, hands and health. In Ontario, 4-H members aged 9–21 come together with volunteer leaders to create a 4-H club, where members learn about a selected topic through hands-on activities and mentorship. In the Cloverbud Program, youth aged 6–8 work with volunteer leaders on a variety of units, giving them a 4-H experience over the course of a year. 4-H emphasizes the importance of looking at the big picture; encouraging youth to see beyond themselves and focus on how their actions affect their relationships, their community, the environment and society as a whole.
