Kona: Doors-Off Hualālai Volcano & Craters DEPARTS: KONA / DURATION: 1 hr* / AVAILABILITY: DAILY Kona lies in the shadow of the island’s third largest and the third most active volcano in Hawai’i – Hualālai Volcano. In 1801, fast-moving lava erupted from craters downhill into the ocean in just two short hours. On this doors-off tour, you’ll have an unobstructed view into Hualālai’s craters including a small pit crater called Luamakami, which is one of the deepest structures of its kind anywhere in the world.

Hualālai Volcano is an important ecological site, home to several rare species which are protected by a nature reserve and a national historic park. Native stands of Ohia and Koa grow on the western and northern flanks of Hualālai, endemic trees that feature prominently in Hawaiian culture and provide vital habitat for wildlife.

After Hualalai, your pilot will head South over Kona Coffee Country and rich agricultural zones. Learn about the ancient Hawaiian land subdivisions of ahupua’a, strategically shaped to include many different elevations ranging from mountaintop to shoreline. This variety of climates enabled inhabitants to grow a wide variety of crops that flourished under different growing conditions, and access fresh water as well as the bounty of the sea.

Fly over the Marine Life Conservation District of Kealakekua Bay where you can look for the white obelisk of Captain James Cook Monument, marking the site of the first recorded European contact with the Hawaiian people. You’ll soar over the snorkeling hotspot of Kahaluu Bay, beautiful beaches and coves, and the ancient Heiaus (temples) of Hāpaiali`i and Ke`ekū.

Enjoy views of Historic Kailua Village and downtown Kona which were inhabited for centuries by ancient Hawai’ian nobles – this area housed several royal complexes throughout history. Hulihe’e palace in downtown Kona still stands, and the bay’s waters are now famous for hosting the Hawai’ian International Billfish Tournament and the Kona Ironman World Championships. Near Kona International Airport you will get a view of the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawai‘i Authority, an innovation park hosting cold-water aqua farms raising Hawaiian Kampachi, Abalone, Lobster and more. You may have even tried a bottle of ice-cold desalinated deep ocean water that came from a depth of 3000’ and took a 1000 years to travel halfway across the world to reach the Kona depths.

Kona: Sunset Experience

DEPARTS: KONA / DURATION: 2.5hr * / AVAILABILITY: DAILY Our Sunset Experience is the perfect way to cap off a day in paradise. Depart from the Kona International Airport and head north in our comfortable Bell 407 tour helicopter. You will see the gorgeous beaches tucked away below lava fields along the Kona and Kohala Coasts. Next, you’ll venture to the far side of the Kohala Mountains, where a secluded and nearly inaccessible series of valleys awaits. Then, crest Mauna Loa, the world’s largest volcano. You’ll be amazed when viewing one of only four green sand beaches in the world! As you pass over Pu‘uhonua ‘o Hōnaunau, a place of refuge under ancient Hawaiian law, and Kealakekua Bay where Captain. James Cook first came ashore in the 1700’s, the sun begins to set.

This is truly one of nature’s best shows. The sky will turn shades of bright yellow, deep orange, burning red and, occasionally, brilliant purple. The photos you’ve seen will pale in comparison with the real thing, and you’ll understand why even locals pause what they’re doing and turn to the western skies most evenings. If you’re lucky, you’ll see a green flash on the horizon as the sun slips down below. Don’t forget to turn around, as the last rays of light illuminate the clouds behind you. Before dark, the colors will fade to delicate pastel hues, a gentle postscript for nature’s masterwork.

Lāna‘i: Maui Nui

DEPARTS: LĀNAI / DURATION: 2 hrs 15 min* / AVAILABILITY: MONDAY, THURSDAY Explore the islands of Lāna‘i, Kaho‘olawe, Maui, and Moloka‘i from above on the only helicopter tour of “Greater Maui” with Paradise Helicopters. Over one million years ago, Maui Nui (“Greater Maui”) was a single island forty percent larger than present day Hawai‘i Island. Over time, natural forces drew Maui Nui lower into the Pacific, and its saddles fell below sea-level to form separate islands.

Launching from Lāna‘i, you will discover all four of the major islands that comprise the Maui Nui. First, head east past Kaho‘olawe, with its unique history as a bombing range for the US Army during WWII, to the southern flank of East Maui. View the slopes of Haleakalā and the road to Hāna without spending hours in a rental car, and make your way past the world-famous surf break at Pe‘ahi - Jaws - as you come upon West Maui and its white beaches and transition over the Pailolo channel to Moloka‘i.

Millennia of erosion have chiseled the windward sides of both Maui and Moloka‘i deep with valleys. In fact, the sea cliffs on the northern side of Moloka‘i are the tallest in the world, an absolutely stunning sight to hover amidst, rife with waterfalls and lush tropical forests. After crossing by the historical town of Kalaupapa, check out northern and eastern Lāna‘i - including Kānepu‘u dryland forest preserve, Keahiakawelo (the “Garden of the Gods”), Polihua, and long, sandy beaches - as you finish the circuit.

Honolulu: O‘ahu to Moloka’i Expedition

DEPARTS HONOLULU AIRPORT / DURATION: 3 hr 15 min* / AVAILABILITY: DAILY

O’AHU SIGHTS On O’ahu, your sights will include aerial views such as the epic surf breaks along the North Shore, the impressive military complex at Kaneohe, and the charming and iconic Chinaman’s Hat island. To the south of Oahu, you’ll enjoy sights of iconic Waikīkī and Diamond Head. You’ll see Pearl Harbor from the same vantage point as the US Airmen who responded to the fateful attack on the Day of Infamy. Soak in the incredible views of Ala Moana Beach Park, the busy Ala Wai Boat Harbor, and the iconic skyline and white sands of Waikīkī Beach. Peer into Diamond Head Crater (Lē‘ahi) from above and gain a new understanding of what formed this famous landmark. Fly by Punchbowl National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific and Kaliuwa’a (Sacred Falls) which has been permanently closed to the public and is now only viewable by air. See beautiful Ka’a’awa Valley (also known as Kualoa Valley) which was a residence of kings, and where young men of noble blood were brought for training. Close to our base at Kalaeloa airport in West O’ahu, gaze at the gem-like luxury resorts of sunny Kapolei.

MOLOKA’I SIGHTS Across the Ka'iwi Channel which lies between Oahu to Moloka'i, you’ll find the historically significant and stunningly beautiful island of Moloka’i. Along the Western flanks of Moloka’i, you’ll gaze upon pristine and remote beaches then skim along the largest sea cliffs in the world where millennia of exposure to the natural elements of wind, wave, and rain have sculpted breathtaking rock formations. From the air, you’ll see how utterly cut off from the rest of the world the Kalaupapa Peninsula of Moloka’i was and still is today. Your pilot will tell you heart-string pulling tales of bravery and the resilience of the human spirit which led the US government to make Kalaupapa Peninsula a Natural Historical Park out of respect for the events that occurred there. Soar over the misty green folds of Kamakou mountain and surrounding ridges as you fly over Moloka’i Forest Reserve. You’ll marvel at the rugged beauty of this sparsely populated island compared to the metropolitan nature of O’ahu.
