Those teams are sponsored by Capital One. In 2012, Brooks was named to the Capital One Academic All-District III Team for the third successive year and was later named to the first-team Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America Team. Addy Comes Up For The Heels: Beginning with the Miami match, UNC dropped its goalkeeper platooning scheme and designated senior Adelaide Gay as the No. 1 goalie on the depth chart. Gay leads a very deep goalie rotation that also includes freshman Bryane Heaberlin, junior Anna Sieloff and senior Hannah Daly. Gay posted her first solo shutout of the season in Carolina’s 1-0 win over Boston College on October 4 and followed that up with a solo shutout against Clemson on October 12, a solo shutout against Duke on October 18 and a solo shutout in the NCAA semifinals verus Stanford. She has a 0.59 goals against average and an 13-3-1 goalkeeper record. She has started 39 of the last 40 games in goal for UNC dating back to August 28, 2011. A First For Bowen: Katie Bowen scored the first goal of her career in the 72nd minute of Carolina’s 6-1 win over Miami. She added her second career goal on November 16 versus Illinois. She has six assists on the season including one on Ranee Premji’s game-winning goal versus Boston College. She also assisted on Kealia Ohai’s game-winning goal versus Stanford in the NCAA semifinals. The New Zealand national team player competed for the Football Ferns at the 2011 World Cup, 2012 Olympics and 2012 U20 World Cup. Alyssa Rich: The senior striker has four goals this season, quadrupling her total from last season. Rich’s goals this season have come against San Diego, Virginia Tech and two versus Illinois. As a freshman in 2009, Rich had the game-winning overtime goal in a 2-1 win over Duke. She assisted on the game-tying goal in UNC’s 4-1 win at NC State on October 25, on the insurance goal against Radford and on the game-winning overtime goal against BYU. Against Illinois she had two goals and an assist. Those five points were the second highest total in a game in her career. She had seven points on three goals and an assist versus Middle Tennessee on September 17, 2010. Amber Brooks: A senior from New Hope, Pa., Amber Brooks this year became the fifth Tar Heel in the past six years to be named a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award, joining Jessica Maxwell in 2007, Yael Averbuch in 2008, Kristi Eveland in 2009 and Ali Hawkins in 2010. Brooks is third on the team in scoring with 20 points and is second on the team lead in goals scored with seven. Brooks had a goal and two assists in UNC’s 4-0 win at Clemson on October 4. The four points matched a career high for Brooks. She also had four points against Miami on October 17, 2010. She scored the game-winning goal in Carolina’s NCAA Tournament opener against Radford. This week she was named the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Player of the Year and a first- team Capital One Academic All-America. Balance Versus San Diego: Three different Tar Heels posted a pair of assists in Carolina’s 5-0 win over San Diego on September 9. Ranee Premji, Meg Morris and Brooke Elby each had two assists in the victory. Brooke Elby: The sophomore striker had one of the biggest back saves in UNC history as she poked away a shot by BYU’s Lindsi Lisenbee Cutshall on a breakaway in the first overtime of UNC’s 2-1 NCAA quarterfinal win at BYU. Elby has five points this season. She had the insurance goal against UConn and had two assists in the win versus USD. She assisted on Maria Lubrano’s game-winning goal against Notre Dame. Crystal Dunn: Dunn has had an amazing 2012. She won a gold medal with the U.S. U20 World Cup Team in September, assisting on the game-winning goal in the final versus Germany. She was named first-team All-ACC for the third straight year and for the second time in the last three years was tapped as the ACC Defensive Player of the Year. Dunn has scored five goals this year, all in NCAA Tournament games. She extended UNC’s season with a goal in the 82nd minute versus Baylor in the third round (UNC went on to advance on penalty kicks) and then scored both goals in UNC’s 2-1 NCAA quarterfinal win over BYU, netting the game-winner in the 107th minute. She assisted on Kealia Ohai’s game-winning goal versus Stanford in the NCAA semifinals. Defensive Ironwomen: Satara Murray and Hanna Gardner have gone virtually the whole way in every Carolina game they’ve played in this season. Murray leads the team in minutes played with 1,991 while Gardner is second with 1,927. Caitlin Ball returned to the starting lineup on defense against Radford, going the full 90 minutes. She has started all five NCAA Tournament games. The Radford game marked her first start since September 7 versus Marquette when she was injured in the opening minutes of the game. All three starters on defense played all 110 minutes against Baylor, all 106 minutes against BYU and all 104 minutes versus Stanford. Gardner’s First Career Score: Freshman Hanna Gardner has been one of the biggest surprises on the UNC team in 2012. The East Chapel Hill High School graduate has started the past 21 games on defense and in Carolina’s 4-0 win over Clemson on October 12 she notched her first career goal and it was a game-winning tally to boot. Gardner was a recruited non-scholarship player who made ACC All-Freshman in 2012. Kealia Ohai: UNC forward Kealia Ohai scored the golden goal in Carolina’s NCAA semifinal win over Stanford on Friday, giving her a team-leading eight goals on the campaign. She had two goals in the Tar Heels’ 2-2 tie against #5 Virginia on September 16. It was the third multi-goal game of Ohai’s career and the first since she had two goals against Clemson on October 21, 2010. She also opened the scoring against Miami on a spectacular goal after a 65- yard sprint in which she weaved her way through four defenders. She assisted on Ranee Premji’s game-winning tally versus Boston College, scored an insurance goal in the win over Duke and assisted on both goals by Crystal Dunn in UNC’s NCAA quarterfinal win at BYU. Ohai was featured in Faces In The Crowd in Sports Illustrated Magazine on October 15, 2012. She scored the game-winning goal for the U.S. in its 1-0 win over Germany in the 2012 U20 World Cup championship game on September 8, 2012. The goal came off an assist by UNC teammate Crystal Dunn. The five points she had in UNC’s 4-1 win at NC State October 25 marked the third time in her career she had five points in a game. Her two assists against BYU marked the third multi-assist game of her career. Kudos For Kristine: Senior Kristine Welsh-Loveman notched the first assist of her career in UNC’s 6-1 win over Miami. Maria Lubrano: The senior forward has seven goals this season. That exceeds by three Lubrano’s career goal total heading into the 2012 campaign. Lubrano has scored UNC’s opening goal in three games — Notre Dame, Maryland and Virginia Tech. She is tied for second on the team in goals scored with seven and is fourth on the team in points with 18. Lubrano had a pair of goals in UNC’s win over Clemson. That was the first multi-goal game of Lubrano’s career. McFarlane’s Return To The Starting Lineup: Kelly McFarlane returned to the starting lineup against Illinois and it proved a stroke of brilliance. She had not started since Carolina’s game at Maryland on September 13. Against the Fighting Illini, McFarlane notched the game-tying goal in the seventh minute. She also added an assist later while playing 63 minutes. She also started against Baylor and converted the penalty kick that put the Tar Heels ahead for good in the shootout. Meg Morris: The junior midfielder has six assists this year while starting 19 of 22 games in the midfield. That exceeds the number of assists she had in Carolina’s first two seasons combined when she had a total of three helpers. She has started 57 of 60 games she has played in during her Tar Heel career. Against Radford she came off the bench for the first time in her career, totaling 44 minutes in relief of Ranee Premji and Katie Bown. She had the first game-winning goal of her career versus Duke and that was her first tally since scoring against Virginia Tech in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals on November 3, 2010. Nebraska: Freshman Paige Nielsen from the Cornhusker State notched her second career goal against Miami. Nielsen’s previous goal had come against Marquette and was the game-winner in that match. She earned her first career assist against Illinois. Nesic Knows: Graduate student Marina Nesic earned her first career point as a Tar Heel, assisting on Kat Nigro’s goal versus Illinois in the NCAA second round. Nigro’s Night: Freshman Kat Nigro scored the first goal of her career as Carolina beat Illinois 9-2 in the NCAA Tournament second round. UNC also beat Baylor 4-2 in penalty kicks in the NCAA Tournament third round with Maria Lubrano, Alyssa Rich, Kelly McFarlane and Katie Bowen converting penalty kicks. The Tar Heels gave up a penalty kick goal for the first time this season against BYU. Ranee Premji: The senior midfielder leads the Tar Heels in assists this year with nine, already exceeding her previous career high of five assists in a season set last year. Six different Tar Heels scored in the match — Kealia Ohai, Ranee Premji, Katie Bowen, Amber Brooks, Maria Lubrano and Paige Nielsen. Summer Green: Despite having missed six games this season while playing with the U.S. U17 National Team at the World Cup, Summer Green shares the UNCis tied for second on the team in goals scored with seven and shares the team lead in points with 21.
