Jubilee – Commemorative Parish Photo Album

The Jubilee committee would like to create a commemorative album of street photos, ie. a series of group photos of villagers and their pets, on a street/hamlet basis. The aim is to get the photos taken in early May so that they can be compiled and printed in June, for issue with the July newsletter.

Any volunteers, who would be willing to coordinate a group photo for their area, should contact Steve Becker on 670345 or [email protected] . Don’t worry if you don’t have the requisite equipment, we can arrange a photographer to be on hand at the date and time of your choice.

For cost reasons, the album can’t exceed 20 photos. The plan is for one photo for each of the following Neighbourhood Watch areas: West Chisenbury; East Chisenbury; Compton; Littlecott; New Buildings; Enford Hill; Enford Farm; New Town; Fifield; Coombe; Coombe Lane; Longstreet; Enford (Central); Grants Road; Paddock Close; Water Lane. 3

THE PARISH VOTE - SUNDAY 3 rd JUNE 2012 A PLAQUE ON THE REBUILT ENFORD BRIDGE COMMEMORATING THE QUEEN’S DIAMOND JUBILEE

A plaque is to be fixed to the new rebuilt Enford Bridge in December and Wiltshire County Council has agreed to pay for it. The Parish Council has decided that the people of Enford should vote on what is written on the plaque.

Three options of the plaque will therefore be put to a vote, commemorating the re- build of the bridge and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The vote will be held at the Enford Village Hall on Sunday 3 rd June 2012 during our celebrations of the Diamond Jubilee. Voting will commence at 5pm and finish at 8.30pm and the result will be announced at 9pm. Only members of Enford parish will be entitled to vote.

At the same time an empty Time Capsule will be given to Enford Youth Club. The Youth Club will be asked to fill the Capsule with current memorabilia and return it full in August. It will be buried in the bridge foundations during the rebuild. The En- ford Newsletter will publish the contents of the Capsule in the autumn.

The design life of the new bridge is in excess of 125 years so it will be some time before the bridge is demolished and capsule is retrieved.

Come along and vote and join in the Jubilee celebrations. The Hog Roast is FREE to help you decide!

Jubilee Festival - Front of House Competition

Have you got your bunting sorted yet? Or are you still planning your red, white and blue hanging basket arrangements?

This isn't a beautiful garden competition. The committee are looking to award the prize to whoever has made the most effort to decorate their property specifically for the occa- sion of the Queen's Jubilee . For example using bunting, flags, patriotic flower arrangements, lighting and garden sculptures.

ENFORD NEWSLETTER April 2012

ENFORD FOOTBALL CLUB is looking for players

As you may know, Enford Football Club were unable to raise a team for this current season and have temporarily disbanded.

It is a great tragedy, bearing in mind the wonderful new facilities that have been built for football in Enford, following a substantial grant from the Football Foundation and other charitable institutions. The facilities are first class and warrant football being played back at Enford on a regular basis.

There is now no football team at all representing Enford, Netheravon and Upavon, meaning there is no team at all in the Avon Valley between Pewsey and Figheldean.

Until a few years ago, Enford had two teams, Netheravon had two teams and Upavon had one team. We are hoping to be up and running again next season. We are looking to hear from any players who would be interested in joining a combined Upavon, Netheravon and Enford team for next season to play their home games at Enford. We would also be delighted to hear from any ex-player or indeed anybody who would be interested in applying for the manager’s vacancy. Please remember that Enford has achieved the full Charter Standard status and over the years has achieved great success in their league and cup exploits.

Anybody interested, could they please telephone the Chairman, Julian Lee on 07831 225 992 or Ollie Stagg on 07831 392 035

She’s Wheelie Going All Out To Win !

The Enford Newsletter was yesterday granted an exclusive interview with Mrs Jane Young

She told our editor that she was absolutely determined to win The Jubilee wheelbarrow race on 3 rd June.

“I’ve been getting up at dawn everyday for the past couple of months to wheel this barrow of muck to the Red Lion and back”, said the feisty Jane.

“I know I’m getting on a bit but, all the same’ I reckon some of these young ‘uns are going to be in for quite a nasty shock on the day”.

When asked who her passenger was going to be, the indomitable Mrs Young refused to comment. However sources close to the newsletter committee have revealed that Mrs Ann Houghton was recently seen carrying out a box load of sequins from a shop in Salisbury, and has been spending a considerable amount of time at her sewing machine of late.

We hope to bring you more exclusive interviews in the run up to the Jubilee celebrations.

ALL SAINTS PRIMARY SCHOOL NETHERAVON NEWS MARCH 2012

To mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations, the school is working with The Jubilee Committee to put on a Local History Exhibition in All Saints Church, Nethera- von. In May, all of the children in school will be finding out about the history of the local area over the past sixty years and we need your help to bring this project alive! Do you have any photos, newspapers, books, artefacts, maps, clothes or anything else which helps to tell the story of the local area during the Queen’s reign? If so, would you be willing to let us display them in the History Exhibition? The children also need to find out about the past from first hand sources. We would like to invite local people who have lived or worked in Netheravon, Haxton or Fittleton for a long time to be interviewed about the past by the children. We are also keen to display old agricultural machinery and any other vehicles from the past sixty years that may be available. This could include old related kitchen items such as butter churns, together with any related display materials/photos describing farming machinery or methods. If you can help or know someone else who might be interested please contact Mrs Hum- phris or Miss England at the school (Tel: 01980 670339). Thank you. A very successful community planting morning was held on Saturday, 3 rd March and I would like to say a huge ‘THANK YOU’ to all the parents, children and friends who came to help. We had an amazing trip to the British Museum in London on the 7 th March for Beech and Rowan classes. Despite the long journey the children were very well behaved and thoroughly enjoyed the sights of the museum especially the Ancient Egyptian and Afri- can displays. Needless to say the shop was also a firm favourite with lots of drums, whistles and glittery masks purchased! On leaving the British Museum, the children were treated to a tour round the sights of London, including Big Ben, The Houses of Parliament and Downing Street. A fantastic experience was had by all.

HOCKEY TOURNAMENT REPORT

16 children from Years 4, 5, & 6 took part in the 12 team Tidworth Hockey Festival on Friday. The B Team came 5 th in their group, while the A team missed out on top spot in their group by only 1 point after the first 5 matches, of which they won 3 and drew 1. They did, however, qualify for the semi-finals for the third year in a row! After a really close match they were finally beaten by the eventual winners, Shrewton, to end up in third place overall. Well done to both teams!

VACANCY for Mid-Day Supervisory Assistant (MDSA)

We want to appoint one MDSA to join our lunch working for one hour per day during term time. Applicants should preferably have experience of working with primary age children and be able to encourage them to eat and play well together. The ability to work within a team is essential, as is the need to use initiative. The Person Specification includes further information. All adults working with children are subject to a full Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check before appointment is confirmed. Further details and the application form are available from the school office or email [email protected] or telephone 01980 670339

Closing date for applications: Noon on Friday, 23 rd March. Start date: Monday, 16 th April

ENFORD CAMERA CLUB

The Enford Camera Club meets at the Enford Village Hall on the first Thursday of each month - at 8pm.

We’re all pretty much amateurs - but enjoy trying to learn how to improve our photos and also sharing any pictures that we’ve taken around the area, between ourselves. Our group is about 12 regular members - but there’s always room for more. Light refreshments are provided and our ‘subs’ are £2 per meeting.

Exceptionally, our next meeting will be at 0830am on Good Friday morning in Pewsey. We will meet up in the Bouverie Hall Car Park - weather permitting. Our aim is to spend an hour or so capturing picturesque and quirky views of Pewsey - before the town gets too busy. This could include photos of interesting buildings, the canal and the river. When we’re done (1000 to 1030hrs) we will go back to the Woodbridge Inn for well earned bacon sandwiches and mugs of tea!

The next two regular meetings, back in the Village Hall will be:

Thu 3 May – Colours and White Balance and Saturation Black and White. Thu 7 Jun – Macro Photography – Up close and personal! Come and join us. Bring your camera - or a memory stick with some pictures on – if you show us yours – we’ll show you ours!Check for latest details with Martin Webb on 01980 670537 or Mort Burdick on 01980 6714

In March the Garden Club enjoyed a fascinating illustrated talk on Herbs – their use as self help medicine and a wide variety to use in cooking. Many of us have herbs growing in our gardens without realising their wider uses apart from mint and parsley as gar- nishes and the daring addition of a nasturtium to a salad ! Christina Stapley our speaker, opened our eyes to the much wider use of herbs and we marvelled at pot pouri , many years old which still retained its strong perfume as it was in a sealed con- tainer and only exposed to air for about an hour. She also warned us of herbs that are dangerous . It was a most interesting talk and well attended.

ENFORD NEWSLETTER April 2012

FRIENDS OF THE RIDGEWAY The Great Stones Way Community Up-Date, Spring, 2012 The main development has been the appointment of the consultants for an environ- mental impact study (EIS) of the scheme. The North Wessex Downs Local Action Group has also now given their approval for a two-stage grant for the project of a little over £35,400. Following approval of funding, we were pleased to be able to commission the exercise, which is now well under way. Our consultants have been gathering information and consulting with conservation organisations and they expect to start their sessions with local communities very shortly. We hope for the active participation of the community at large as well as of all the organisations concerned with the natural, heritage and social environment along the route. The main feed-back to date has focussed on the estimated numbers of walkers. Sur- veys show numbers on The Ridgeway as 250-350,000 pa. in total (354,000 in 2004), of whom 16% (compared with 3% on Hadrian’s Wall Path) were long-distance users, ac- cording to a 1996 study. The vast majority of users are dog-walkers and visitors to certain “honey-pot” locations, such as the Uffington White Horse on The Ridgeway. Away from these areas, walkers are few and far between, as anyone walking The Ridge- way can testify. Meanwhile, we have been pressing ahead with preparations for the works in the south- ern section of the route, and we are aiming to complete the works on this Plain and Avon section of the route in time for it to be available to walkers for at least a part of the 2012 walking season. Environmental Impact Study - Statement of Aims and Criteria Introduction: The Friends of The Ridgeway has proposed to establish a new recrea- tional walking route, The Great Stones Way (GSW), between Barbury Castle near Swin- don and the Old Sarum ancient monument near Salisbury, linking the World Heritage Site of Avebury and Stonehenge. This Note sets out FoR’s aims and objectives for the project, and its criteria and approach to the identification of the route. Aims and Objectives : FoR’s constitutional objectives are “the preservation, for the public benefit.. of all the natural aspects and features of the ancient Ridgeway track- ways along the chalk downs of Southern England, including The Ridgeway National Trail and any extension thereof..” The Association believes that these trails are best preserved by being valued and used by the walking and local communities. The GSW project is proposed to be undertaken in accordance with these objectives as the immedi- ate southern extension of The Ridgeway National Trail. A subsidiary aim is the creation of a new recreational facility that will appeal to visitors and the public generally, will attract walkers, including the less abled, to enjoy healthy open-air recreation and to appreciate the natural, heritage and landscape environment of the area, and will gener- ate economic benefits for the local community.

ALL SAINTS ENFORD CHURCH ENFORD

EASTER – the most joyful day of the year Easter is the most joyful day of the year for Christians. Christ has died for our sins. We are forgiven. Christ has risen! We are redeemed! We can look forward to an eternity in his joy! Alleluia! The Good News of Jesus Christ is a message is so simple that you can explain it to someone in a few minutes. It is so profound that for the rest of their lives they will be still be ‘growing’ in their Christian walk with God. Why does the date more around so much? Because the date of Passover moves around, and according to the biblical account, Easter is tied to the Passover. Passover celebrates the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt and it lasts for seven days, from the middle of the He- brew month of Nisan, which equates to late March or early April. Sir Isaac Newton was one of the first to use the Hebrew lunar calendar to come up with firm dates for Good Friday: Friday 7 April 30 AD or Friday 3 April, 33 AD, with Easter Day falling two days later. Modern scholars continue to think these the most likely. Most people will tell you that Easter falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the Spring Equinox, which is broadly true. But the precise calculations are compli- cated and involve something called an ‘ecclesiastical full moon’, which is not the same as the moon in the sky. The earliest possible date for Easter in the West is 22 March, which last fell in 1818 and won’t fall again until 2285. The latest is 25 April, which last happened in 1943 and is next due in 2038. Why the name, ‘Easter’? In almost every European language, the festival’s name comes from ‘Pesach’, the Hebrew word for Passover. The Germanic word ‘Easter’, however, seems to come from Eostre, a Saxon fertility goddess mentioned by the Venerable Bede. He thought that the Saxons worshipped her in ‘Eostur month’, but may have confused her with the classical dawn goddesses like Eos and Aurora, whose names mean ‘shining in the east’. So Easter might have meant simply ‘beginning month’ – a good time for starting up again after a long winter. Finally, why Easter eggs? On one hand, they are an ancient symbol of birth in most european cultures. On the other hand, hens start laying regularly again each Spring. Since eggs were forbidden during Lent, it’s easy to see how decorating and eating them became a practical way to celebrate Easter.

With love and prayers From the Team Rector Rev. Mark Zammit
