Design-Build 30% Project Overview The images utilized in this presentation are 30% concept designs, and could potentially change to some degree of variation depending on the submittals provided by the successful proponent of the Design-Build submission. About the Project …

The Ministry of Transportation is working in partnership with Niagara Region on a design-build project for the construction of the following elements:

• Reconstruct the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW)/Glendale Ave. interchange to a Diverging • Reconstruct the Glendale Ave./York Rd. intersection to a single-lane roundabout with channelization • Construct a new Airport Rd. loop ramp and connection road from Glendale Ave. to York Rd./Airport Rd. intersection • Construct a new commuter carpool lot at the northwest quadrant of the interchange • Rehabilitate the pavement on the QEW eastbound and westbound lanes between the east end of the bridge and QEW/Hwy. 405 split (~3.0 km) • Extend the right turning lane of Glendale Ave. between Taylor Rd. and Niagara-On- The-Green Blvd. What is a Diverging Diamond Interchange? • A diverging diamond interchange (DDI) is a type of interchange where traffic on the minor street (Glendale) diverges to the left-hand side of the road through two cross over intersections.

• This enables left-turning traffic to access the major road (QEW) without waiting for signals or crossing upcoming traffic.

• This allows for the improvement of the interchange functionality and significantly improves safety from a vehicle movement perspective by reducing the number of conflict points. Reconstruct the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW)/Glendale Ave. interchange to a Diverging Diamond Interchange

• This will be the first Diverging Diamond Interchange constructed in . • There are only two other operational in Canada at this time; 1 in Alberta and the other in Saskatchewan Video of the first DDI constructed in Calgary, AB Reconstruct the Glendale Ave./York Rd. intersection to a single-lane roundabout with channelization • This involves the conversion of an existing signalized intersection to a single-lane roundabout The Glendale Ave./York Road Roundabout and Urban Design • Roundabout constructed at RR55 • The present design allows for Niagara Stone Rd and Concession 6 contrasting coloured concrete Road in Virgil (Salsa Red) in the medians.

• Upgraded landscaping in the roundabout customized to mimic current plantings within Niagara- On-The-Lake.

• Additional upgrades to the roundabout provided will be irrigation and an electrical supply.

• Standard street light illumination can also be considered for upgrade to the current Niagara Region decorative standard. Construct a new Airport Rd. loop ramp and connection road from Glendale Ave. to York Rd./Airport Rd. intersection

• This involves the extension of the signalized intersection at York Rd and Airport Rd, to loop around with a connection to the MTO commuter lot and a direct connection to the DDI. Allowing free flowing access to Airport Rd for any traffic heading towards Virgil/Old Town. • This will also include an MUP (multi-use pathway) and illumination The Airport Rd. Loop Ramp and Urban Design • The present design allows for contrasting coloured concrete (Salsa Red) in the medians. • Standard street light illumination can also be Decorative Street Light considered for upgrade to the Illumination, consisting current Niagara Region of black poles and arms decorative standard. with decorative pole skirting.

This decorative standard would allow for future upgrades such as banner or hanging basket arms.
