DEREK HAINSWORTH’S LOVE OF SURFING WAS REIGNITED ABOUT EIGHT YEARS AGO WHEN A FRIEND INTRODUCED HIM TO STAND-UP PADDLEBOARD (SUP) SURFING, ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING SPORTS IN THE WORLD.

Having surfed as a young man, family-life had put the sport on the backburner for many years, but after moving to the coastal town of 1770, located at the southern end of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Derek grabbed the opportunity to learn a new form of surfing. “It’s great for fitness because your whole body gets a workout. Kitchen capers Downsizing your home to upsize your lifestyle

A GOOD-SIZED, WELL-DESIGNED KITCHEN WITH A BIG PANTRY WAS AT THE TOP OF THE WISH LIST FOR KEEN HOME COOK KEITH MEAD WHEN HE AND PARTNER PETER RENWICK BOUGHT A HOME AT GEMLIFE WOODEND OVER-50S LIFESTYLE RESORT LAST YEAR.

Keith has been a prolific maker of jams, sauces, chutneys and pickles for as long as he can remember and has been enthusiastically cooking up fresh batches in his new kitchen, filling up the pantry shelves with home-made goodies, and sharing jars with neighbours.

Previously living on a one-acre property with fruit trees and veggie gardens, plus a pool, Keith and Peter had had enough of the endless upkeep and labour needed to maintain a big place.

“We were ready to downsize and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the homes, and the friendly community at GemLife. The small garden is very manageable,” said Keith.

“But the big walk-in pantry sold me. We were impressed by the kitchen - all the equipment provided is of good quality. We’re loving life at GemLife.”

GemLife Director and CEO Adrian Puljich said for Australians, kitchens had become the most important room in the house, something reflected in the functional, well-sized and well decked-out kitchens in GemLife homes.

“Kitchens form the heart of our homes and are designed to give even the most demanding of home cooks a great experience,” he said.

20 The Gem www.gemlife.com.au APRIL 2021 21 “We ensure there’s plenty of bench space, good quality appliances such as Smeg and Oliveri, oversized drawers with soft-close runners for better storage, and most homes have walk-in pantries. Fridge cavities are oversized and plumbed for ice-water, and at our upmarket resorts, we offer bar fridges too.”

GemLife chef Matt Conquest, who caters for events at GemLife’s Queensland resorts, does regular demos to show homeowners how to get the most out of their home’s appliances including the Smeg ovens and cooktops.

“The kitchens have everything a home cook needs - the appliances are streamlined and super-functional. Most of the homes have state-of-the-art Smeg induction cook-tops which are top-notch,” said Matt.

“The kitchen set-up in the homes is wonderful - having great equipment makes cooking more intuitive and pleasurable.”

THE HAPPY WINNERS OF THE 2020 GEMLIFE GRANDPARENTS DAY AWARDS HAVE ALL RECENTLY RETURNED FROM ENJOYING THEIR INDIVIDUAL PRIZES SHARED WITH THE GRANDCHILDREN WHO NOMINATED THEM. WE CAUGHT UP WITH THEM TO FIND OUT ABOUT THEIR UNIQUE EXPERIENCES FIRST-HAND.

Fun in the sun at Rivershore Resort A fabulous camping holiday at the Sunshine Coast’s beautiful Ingenia Rivershore Resort at Diddillibah was enjoyed by GemLife Grandparents of the Year Allan and Sheryl Russell and their four grandchildren. “This was such a great prize. The resort is sort of a fancy caravan park not far away from our home here at GemLife Maroochy Quays and is a great place for the kids who really enjoyed its huge swimming pool, water slides, mini golf and so much more,” said Allan. The weekend excursion also included a delicious family lunch with the grandchildren and their parents at the onsite Driftwood restaurant which has a special deck area overlooking the pool. Allan, 77, and Sheryl, 73, said the camping holiday with their grandchildren Flynn, 9, Carter, 5, Olivia, 8, and Sophie, 6, stretched over the whole weekend and was a really great experience for all six of them… one that was such a surprise to receive but would be remembered for many years to come. “We never expected to win a Grandparents of the Year Award, but the words written by our grandchildren were beautiful and really touched our hearts,” said Sheryl.
