DEREK HAINSWORTH’S LOVE OF SURFING WAS REIGNITED ABOUT EIGHT YEARS AGO WHEN A FRIEND INTRODUCED HIM TO STAND-UP PADDLEBOARD (SUP) SURFING, ONE OF THE FASTEST GROWING SPORTS IN THE WORLD.
Having surfed as a young man, family-life had put the sport on the backburner for many years, but after moving to the coastal town of 1770, located at the southern end of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, Derek grabbed the opportunity to learn a new form of surfing. “It’s great for fitness because your whole body gets a workout. Originally based in Melbourne where she had worked for many years in public affairs at RMIT and then in international development for Save the Children, Val’s relocation to her new home at GemLife Pacific Paradise was delayed by three months due to COVID lockdown restrictions.
She eventually arrived with her little cavoodle dog in December but admits the wait to get into her new home was the “longest three months of her life”.
“I’ve been coming to the Sunshine Coast for 24 years and loved it and always said I’d love to retire here. I made that dream a reality through GemLife.”

“I joined the ranks of Pat Helms who had a hole- in-one in our club’s first game when it teed off in August 2019. With me, it happened in the year of COVID and only took me 44 years to achieve,” said Paul.
Keeping fit and active is a shared goal of many residents who enjoy getting together on a regular basis for a hit of golf.
As a result, during the past 18 months the club has grown from five members to 48 social golfers, all residents at GemLife Bribie Island.
Games are played every first and third Friday of the month at nearby Bribie Island Golf Club at Woorim where 28 of the golfers are also members.

Keith has been a prolific maker of jams, sauces, chutneys and pickles for as long as he can remember and has been enthusiastically cooking up fresh batches in his new kitchen, filling up the pantry shelves with home-made goodies, and sharing jars with neighbours.
Previously living on a one-acre property with fruit trees and veggie gardens, plus a pool, Keith and Peter had had enough of the endless upkeep and labour needed to maintain a big place.
“We were ready to downsize and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the homes, and the friendly community at GemLife. The small garden is very manageable,” said Keith.

Fun in the sun at Rivershore Resort A fabulous camping holiday at the Sunshine Coast’s beautiful Ingenia Rivershore Resort at Diddillibah was enjoyed by GemLife Grandparents of the Year Allan and Sheryl Russell and their four grandchildren. “This was such a great prize. The resort is sort of a fancy caravan park not far away from our home here at GemLife Maroochy Quays and is a great place for the kids who really enjoyed its huge swimming pool, water slides, mini golf and so much more,” said Allan. The weekend excursion also included a delicious family lunch with the grandchildren and their parents at the onsite Driftwood restaurant which has a special deck area overlooking the pool. Allan, 77, and Sheryl, 73, said the camping holiday with their grandchildren Flynn, 9, Carter, 5, Olivia, 8, and Sophie, 6, stretched over the whole weekend and was a really great experience for all six of them… one that was such a surprise to receive but would be remembered for many years to come. “We never expected to win a Grandparents of the Year Award, but the words written by our grandchildren were beautiful and really touched our hearts,” said Sheryl.
