Free Workshop, Free Admission for 12 and Under, and $1000 Bursary: Lunenburg Doc Fest’s Youth Program Lunenburg Doc Fest presents an expanded and enhanced Youth Program this month. Adding to the popular free Youth Workshop for 13 to 18 year olds, the Festival is offering a $1000 school bursary and free admission to the Youth Screening for anyone 12 and under.

Starting this weekend (running September 12, 13 and 19, 20), the Youth Workshop will teach kids to make their own short documentaries then showcase their work at the festival along with the feature film, I Am Eleven, an "insightful, funny and moving documentary portrait of childhood."

NEW this year, Lunenburg Doc Fest is pleased to offer free admission to youth 12 and under for the Youth/Family program, which includes the premieres of short documentaries created during the free Youth Documentary Workshop plus the I Am Eleven film.

From an orphanage in India, to a single-parent household in inner-city Melbourne, to bathing with elephants in Thailand, I Am Eleven explores the lives and thoughts of children from 15 countries. I Am Eleven weaves together deeply personal and at times hilarious portraits of what it means to sit at this transitional age. These young minds provide us with a powerful insight into the future of our world. The screening takes place at 1:00pm, The Pearl Theatre, 37 Hall Street, Lunenburg.

Also NEW in 2015, Lunenburg Doc Fest will award a bursary of $1,000 to a Nova Scotian student, attending post-secondary film studies. In addition to the bursary, a Film Pass granting access to all feature documentary screenings on September 26 and 27, 2015, will be awarded.

"We strive to offer something for everyone, including the youth,” states Debra Beers, Co-Chair of the Festival. “Our community encourages youth to participate in this festival and it is our pleasure to create opportunities that will educate, entertain and inspire them.”

For more information, to register for the free workshop, apply for the bursary or buy tickets to the screening go to http://www.lunenburgdocfest.com/. Deadline for the bursary is September 16, 2015.

Emerging Artist Project: A Handmade Assembly http://www.handmadeassembly.com/ Deadline: Sept 14th, 2015

Organized collaboratively by Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre and Mount Allison University’s Owens Art Gallery, A Handmade Assembly invites artists, curators and others to lead discussions, facilitate workshops, initiate projects, open exhibitions, and share in a common thread, the handmade.

A Handmade Assembly is an initiative in response to the significant number of artists who have in recent years been using materials and processes that are laborious, often intimate, and usually associated with traditional craft methods. The discourse surrounding these practices is growing in turn as DIY aesthetics and ideals flood the mainstream. In appreciation of the handmade in contemporary culture, A Handmade Assembly is a venue for artists to discuss their practices and make new and necessary networks.

Emerging artists from the Atlantic region who have completed their formal studies are eligible to apply.

An artist fee will be paid.

To apply, please send: 1. 10 images of your work 2. A description of the proposed project and resulting exhibition (max 500 words) 3. A brief bio (max 250 words) 4. A current C.V.

Applications can be sent to [email protected] by 5pm on Monday September 14, 2015. Please include the subject line 'emerging artist project'. Thank you.

Kodak Celebrates 50 years of Super 8! http://www.kodak.ca/ek/CA/en/corp/default.htm Fifty years ago, Kodak introduced Super 8 mm. This “super” format solved some of the challenges of standard 8mm, which launched https://afcoop.wildapricot.org/Sys/EmailTemplate/EditPreviewTemplate 14/18 2/5/2016 https://afcoop.wildapricot.org/Sys/EmailTemplate/EditPreviewTemplate a few decades earlier. Regardless of those hurdles, 8 mm cameras became a common sight at family parties, special events, and vacation destinations by the 1950s. But with the invention of the 50-foot cartridge in 1965, anyone could shoot without interruption for a much smaller investment. Suddenly everyone was a filmmaker!

Many of today's great filmmakers — Steven Spielberg, J.J. Abrams, David Fincher, Tim Burton, Peter Jackson, Michael Bay and Christopher Nolan — got their “start” creating Super 8 movies in their back yards. This powerful little format has gone on to forge an emotional path into the hearts of many artists and filmmakers over the decades. And its unique look is still revered today.

Super 8 has also made its mark in Hollywood, with numerous commercials, music videos, branded entertainmentutilizing the small gauge film. You may have noticed its unique look on recent episodes of American Idol, American Horror Story, and The Americans. This small format provides a distinct look for big pictures as well, such as the Oscar®-winning JFK, The Fighter and Argo, as well as the upcoming I Saw the Light. And documentaries, such as Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck and Brand: A Second Coming, rely on Super 8 footage to tell their stories.

This will be a big year for Super 8 mm with the Logmar camera arriving, the first new Super 8 camera to hit the market in 30 years. It combines analog and digital technology, with features guaranteed to excite the pros as well as the consumer. Perhaps one will find its way into the hands of the next great filmmaker!

We look forward to celebrating this special occasion with all of the Super 8 fans and filmmakers around the globe, and seeing the innovative images that continue to be created to entertain our visual palates.

Nova Scotia film community launches locations website to promote industry, address void www.filmnovascotia.ca ; Nova Scotia’s film and television community has launched a website to showcase and promote film locations, service companies and talent in an effort to reinvigorate an industry suffering from provincial government cuts imposed last spring.

The site – www.filmnovascotia.ca – is now live, the result of several weeks of mostly volunteer work spearheaded by long-time locations manager Shaun Clarke and the Directors Guild of Canada-Atlantic Region.

“There is very little production happening right now, and nothing on the books, during what might otherwise have been one of the busiest seasons in years. So we have set up a website and we are offering locations services to producers considering Nova Scotia for their productions,” said Clarke.

“We are providing location and scouting services that were previously provided by the now-shuttered government-run Film & Creative Industries Nova Scotia. The website is intended to fill that gap.”

Believed to be the only non-government-sponsored site of its kind in North America – a de facto film commission – www.filmnovascotia.ca offers a locations photo gallery, a highlight reel courtesy of Egg Studios, filmography and links to film-union websites, equipment houses, service providers and Nova Scotia Business Inc., which is managing the new Nova Scotia Film & Television Production Incentive Fund.

“The only productions that have gone ahead since the government cuts in April are projects that came in under the previous film tax credit. Meanwhile, the industry is booming elsewhere in Canada, due to the low Canadian dollar and competitive incentive programs,” said James Nicholson, Business Agent for DGC-ARC.

“Film crew are leaving town, and local producers are having difficulty getting projects off the ground,” he said. “But we intend to prove to the provincial government and the public that this is a vibrant, viable industry that provides a positive financial impact for the province. NSBI is co-operating fully in this initiative, but we are not waiting on government. This needs to happen now.”

A CALL FOR #NSFILMJOBS STORIES http://us9.campaign-archive1.com/?u=990cca95e51513f19d25bf70c&id=5bd825fe9b With the summer almost over, the Nova Scotia Legislature will be soon resuming for fall sessions. In advance of this, both the NDP and PC caucus are looking to keep the Nova Scotia film & television industry front and centre as they prepare for the fall session. To do this, they need YOUR help.

Both parties are in the process of gathering #NSFILMJOBS stories to share on the legislature floor. We are asking you to read their messages below, and then share with them the impact the changes to the Film Tax Credit (along with the loss of Film & Creative Industries Nova Scotia) has had on your livelihood and families. Please only send your story to one party – we are trying to avoid duplicates, as we want both parties to be able to read different letters.

It's important to keep this issue in the spotlight as we continue to fight for the future of the industry, including the many significant problems the new film incentive program does not address, such as the loss of Film & Creative Industries NS, and the accompanying disappearance of equity funding and development programs.

Sincerely,

The Screen Nova Scotia Political Action Committee
