1. The project will provide: A ferry ambassador will ride the MV Osprey 2000 to distribute maps, brochures, and other information about Balfour and the Kootenay Outlet area including the East Shore, Nelson, and Kaslo. Promotes tourism and recreational opportunities in the region. Also promotes local celebrations and festivals throughout the area and teaches about the culture and history of the region.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: The goal of tourism marketing is threefold: we want people to eat, play, and stay. Many on the ferry are just traveling through to another destination and we want to encourage them to take the time to see the sights, have a meal, and stay over at one of our local hotels, motels, or B&Bs--or, if they can't do that due to previous plans, hope to persuade them to return to our area for a future visit. We also provide full time employment for a local youth aged 16 to 30.

1. The project will provide: We will preserve Saint Michael and All Angels Church, a historic community asset, for future generations, developing it into a performance centre for the Kootenay Outlet area. The church, located at 8551 Busk Road, has been decommissioned by the Anglican Church and we wish to preserve this important heritage building. It is the oldest building in Balfour, built in 1882 on land donated by Balfour's founder, Charles Busk, and one of the five oldest buildings in the West Kootenays. This project is to add washroom facilities (handicapped accessible), a small addition to accommodate a meeting room / snack preparation area, and a wheelchair accessible entrance to the church.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: The project will provide an accessible performance space to our community which can also be used for community events such as teas, lectures, weddings, art shows, etc. We would like to be part of a circuit of performers in conjunction with other area venues such as the Langham in Kaslo. The acoustics in the church are wonderful and it would be a perfect venue for music, dance etc. The church needs little work besides the installation of flush washrooms and accessible entryway plus small meeting room. The first service was held in the church in December 1891 and the final one was December 2019.

1. The project will provide: We will build and install our glass observation bee hives into the schools. The glass observation bee hive is our "Live Learning Tool". The honey bees are our measuring stick to sustain a healthy environment for humanity, plants, animals and insects "We teach the basics of pollination, why it is important, risk to all pollinators and what the students/community can do to reduce the risk to pollinators in their own back yard. We instill responsible stewardship to the school children at an early age so that this generation can make a difference now and in the future.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: Encouraging the children the importance of looking after our environment. Keeping the environment clean and healthy by using natural products and means to control or remove unwanted plants and pests in our gardens and community spaces. Sharing the benefit of planting herbs, flowers, crops, trees to attract bees and other pollinators. We emphasize the importance of the honey bee/pollinators as they are responsible for pollinating 35% of our food

supply, therefore how important it is to keep our environment clean and healthy. Our project is connecting the children to nature using "hands on learning". We obtain this knowledge and facts from science research, resource books and online materials. We attend workshops and education days presented by the BC Honey Producers Assoc. This learned information is included in our education program that is delivered by our own educators to the students in schools in the Spring and Fall of each year.

1. The project will provide: The group is active from early September until early June, when up to a quarter of the singers move on and new ones are auditioned. So in September we start with about 15 to 20 new members and new repertoire. It is very helpful to have a retreat to start out the year to get to know each other, build community as a group, and start on new music. For the past four years we have held a weekend retreat at the Yasodhara Ashram in Kootenay Bay and they have been tremendously successful. Over the years Corazón has often included singers from the rural areas around Nelson, which is why we are applying to Areas A, E, and F.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: The choir has a busy schedule of rehearsals and performances all year, and this retreat gets them started early to get to know each other, learn what is expected of them, and learn new music, all in an atmosphere free of distractions. After the last two retreats, the singers have all reported high levels of learning, enjoyment and group cohesion, and the director reports that these experiences have resulted in improved choral performance.

1. The project will provide: The complete project is the extensive renovation of the Crawford Bay Community Hall. The project will transform the building into an energy efficient, low maintenance, aesthetically pleasing, acoustically ambient venue which meets current building codes for barrier free access and fire and occupant safety. The project will be achieved through a phased approach. Phase One, described elsewhere in this application, is complete. Phase Two (this application) will provide a BC Building Code review for occupant safety, complete structural, mechanical, electrical, and energy efficiency assessments and reports, with corresponding design specifications plans and drawings. This will be achieved with funds from: saved and donated dollars, community fundraising activities, local, regional, and provincial grant applications, and through volunteer hours and other in-kind donations. An architect and a design/build contractor will be hired, as well as structural, mechanical, electrical engineers, as may be required by the architect. In coordination with the architect these professionals will inspect and assess the structure and provide reports and plans as required to obtain actual construction costs. This will also ensure the project is in compliance with both the requests of the RDCK Area A Building Official and with RDCK building bylaw 2200 which defines the Crawford Bay Community Hall as a complex building. This will allow the project to move to Phase Three: pricing and construction.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: The broader project will address: incomplete foundation, deteriorating roof and exterior cladding; deficient electrical and mechanical systems; poor energy efficiency and high maintenance costs; run-down visual interior and exterior appearance; and non compliance with current fire safety and access requirements. These issues were identified through on-site viewing by a structural engineer, two architects, RDCK building official, a building contractor and from the results of our 2018 Community Hall & Land Upgrade Survey. Also, discussions took place at our last three annual general meetings and have been on-going with hall users for over a decade. Phase Two will address the need for professional assessments, reports and drawings for pricing construction. These issues were identified through conversations with the RDCK Area A building official, study of RDCK building bylaws and discussion with local architects.

1. The project will provide: The Annual Kootenay Lake Summit's, hosted by the Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society (FOKLSS) have played an integral role in educating Kootenay Lake residents. The Summit is a free, day or evening event offering an opportunity for community members to engage by attending talks and workshops hosted by experts. Last years event allowed over 120 residents to participate and the chance to learn about climate change impacts around Kootenay Lake. This event will give residents a chance to learn about stewardship activities going on around the lake that they can actively participate in. It gives them to access information to make more informed decisions and to share this knowledge with neighbors and friends. Community involvement in such events allows exposure to the importance of lake health for the community as a whole and provides locals with an avenue through which to learn, ask questions and connect with other interested individuals. This year™s event will take place in early November at a location along the main body of Kootenay Lake and will be an evening event aimed open to all communities surrounding Kootenay Lake including adjacent towns and communities who share an interest in the health of Kootenay Lake.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: FOKLSS plays an important role in bringing educational opportunities to residents so they can easily earn about the impact of activities around the lake and the importance of regulations put in place by the local municipalities. Focusing on a topic which attendees from previous years have requested ensures that we are keeping the best interests of the community at the forefront of our work. Feedback from last year's summit highlighted the need for more educational content that informs lake residents about lake management, in particular, hydro operations impact on lake levels and threatened species and the rules and regulations on and around the lake so that residents can help steward the lake from an informed foundation for future generations. Having workshops at the Summit gives a tangible take-home message that residents can use to become active stewards of the lake.

1. The project will provide: This project will be carried out by Friends of Kootenay Lake Stewardship Society (FoKLSS) with guidance from Living Lakes Canada (LLC). FoKLSS contribution will compliment LLC™s Citizen Science Series project, which is an initiative working to ensure that Community based water monitoring (CBM) provides scientifically robust water quality and quantity data to support informed decisions on water allocation for communities and ecosystems. This is achieved by utilizing the Canadian Aquatic Biomonitoring Network (CABIN) protocol, which is a standardized method of gathering data on indicators of stream health. Our CABIN certified employee will train citizen scientists to gather data on the tributaries of Kootenay Lake. This will create a network of informed citizens and increase our capacity to monitor our watershed. FOKLSS will organize a two-day workshop with LLC™s CABIN Program Manager Raegan Mallinson. First Nations groups, students, and interested community members will be invited to attend the workshop. Which will focus on water monitoring basics and using CBM to monitor watersheds is important. In August and September monitoring will take place at sub basins of interest. At each visit two volunteers will help FOKLSS gather stream data that will be uploaded to the national CABIN database. FOKLSS will also host two education days at one of our creeks. Students will learn basic stream measurements and taxonomy of benthic invertebrates.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: In February 2017, Columbia Basin Trust (CBT) released a report Water Monitoring and Climate in the Upper Columbia Basin, Summary of Current Status and Opportunities, outlining the current state of knowledge of water quality and quantity in the Columbia Basin. The research “ led by Dr. Martin Carver “ revealed that Columbia Basin water data is inadequate for managing and protecting the region™s water resources in response to climate change. The report made it clear that it is critical that we begin to fill data gaps to improve our knowledge of water quality in the Basin. By training citizen scientists and building community-based monitoring networks this empowers them to become stewards of their freshwater sources, ensuring it remains healthy and that communities are climate-resilient. This project will address collective solutions to ensure that the water monitoring efforts of volunteers and community groups remain useful, viable, cost-effective and an opportunity to recruit and support more boots on the ground.

1. The project will provide: The Osprey Monitoring Program is a project aimed at engaging community members to get involved in the monitoring of an indicator species on Kootenay Lake. The project aims to engage community members to become citizen scientists and collect scientific data on our local Osprey populations. By equipping local volunteers with the tools to conduct nest surveys on the lake, they can then take this knowledge and advocate for ecosystem health in their community. Volunteers will be looking for nest occupants, presence of fledglings, incubating adults, and empty nests. Osprey data gathered in this program will help us analyze the health and the conditions of fish populations in the main body of Kootenay lake. This is because an Osprey™s dietary habits, reflect the health of the lake by indicating fish abundance. This year will be our fifth monitoring the main body of Kootenay Lake, and we will start recording trends and changes over time. Our data compliments data collected in the 20-year monitoring program lead by the Nelson Naturalists on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake.

The program includes one training workshop near the lake with local biologists and trained wildlife specialists. Followed by six more observational trips conducted by boat. This year our observational trips will involve a lunch provided by FOKLSS and there will be $50 suggested donation to help FOKLSS recover some costs.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: Data collected by Nelson Naturalists in their Balfour-Waneta program has shown a significant decline in Osprey population from 1997-2004. Habitat loss, exposure to harmful chemicals, declining fish stock, and weather events associated with climate change, have negatively affected Osprey populations. Osprey are extremely sensitive to abnormal weather events and dramatic seasonal shifts. Luckily, they are also an accessible species to observe. Chosen Osprey habitat is ideal for training citizen scientists because it is easy to approach without disturbing the nest. This long-term study on the population will allow us to record the possible implications of population decline and fill gaps in our data. Our data will fill gaps in the data of the Balfour-Waneta program, which highlighted the need for expansion to the main body of the lake. After four successful years conducting the Osprey Monitoring Program, FOKLSS has begun to help fill existing data gaps.

Final trail layout for the Lyon's Bluff Trail Our trail development crew and contract crew leaders will flag the final location of the 5km Lyons Bluff Trail. The trail starts at the One Mile parking area and takes hikers to the CBC Tower. (Please see attached Google Earth image). 3. Install a Sign at the Whitewater Ski area that identifies key summer routes to major hiking destinations in the area.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: 1. Without regular maintenance the Pulpit Trail deteriorates rapidly. Professional trail builders have identified areas where erosion and wear have occurred in the previous season. 2. Because of heavy usage of the Pulpit trail system, the Society has developed a new easily-accessible trail at One Mile called the Lyons Bluff Trail. The Society has acquired a License of Occupation from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to build a parking lot and locate the trail on Ministry lands. We also have approval from Recreation Sites and Trails BC to construct and maintain this trail under Section 57 of the Forest and Range Practices Act. 3. Signage in the Whitewater Area will orient summer hikers to hiking opportunities in the area. Whitewater Ski Resort has been consulted and supports signage and activities in their tenure.

1. The project will provide: This project represents completion of the revitalization of the Civic Centre's Upper Gymnastics Hall and will complete development of the new Multi-Purpose Gym space. Specifically this project strives to complete outstanding renovation tasks from last summer. It includes painting of the locker rooms, bathrooms, viewing hall and multipurpose room. It includes purchase and installation of equipment for programs focussing on gymnastics strength, mobility & agility and movement based instruction. It includes installtion of seniors access/safety equipment including bathroom grab handles and an AED defribulator. This project will ensure that the multi purpose gym space will realize it's full potential for mixed program uses. This project will increase capacity of the gymnastics facility, allowing an increase in the number of children who can be served during peak times. It will also allow and increase in the number and viariety of programs that Glacier Gymnastics is able to offer to the community of Nelson and surround areas.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: The primary programming opportunities include: 1) addition of physical literacy programs targeting pre-school and school aged children; 2) development of a Seniors Can Move program; and 3) Adult Gymnastics & Fitness classes. Secondary programming oportunities exist through cross training partnerships with other community groups

including sports clubs (like skiing, swimming and climbing), as well as acrobatic based clubs (such as circus, acro yoga and dance groups).

These oportunities were identified through our use of the space this season. We have gained a better understanding of what activities can be successfully delivered along with the specific equipment needs that will be limited to ceiling and wall mounted options to ensure floor space remains maximized.

1. The project will provide: Harrop Procter and Balfour Fruit Harvest will feed families, not bears, by linking volunteer fruit harvesters to those who have excess fruit. Fruit trees will be registered to the program by land owners and residents, and fruit harvesting coordinators will track harvesting activities and map fruit trees in the area. Fruit harvesting coordinators will also provide at least one fruit processing workshop in both Harrop Procter and in Balfour to teach the skills necessary to preserve the bounty of the harvest for the winter season and increase local food security. This project will also help to prevent grizzly and black bear conflicts by managing the extreme excess of unmanaged fruit in the area, which will increase human safety.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: In 2018 it was determined through remote cameras that there were at least four grizzly bears frequenting the Harrop Procter area, and in 2019 one of these bears was also seen in Balfour. While grizzly bear movements across the West Arm is important for long term persistence of populations by maintaining connectivity of habitats, these bears learned to hang around because or the excess of unmanaged fruit trees in the communities. This excess of fruit also creates an opportunity for it to be utilized by local harvesters to feed local families.

1. The project will provide: Nav-CARE is a compassionate community based program that provides support, education and guidance, and connects clients with community services and health resources, to improve the quality of life for persons with serious illness living in rural communities. This program allows older adults to remain in the comfort of their homes while maintaining their connection to health and community services. The older adults are visited in the home by the specially trained volunteers every 2-3 weeks over the project period to advocate, facilitate community connections, coordinate access to services and resources, and promote active engagement of older adults within the community.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: Adults living at home with serious illness often have many symptoms and poor quality of life in part because they are unable to connect with the resources they need especially adults who are living in rural areas. This program trains volunteer navigators to provide support, education, and connection to resources in the community which helps adults improve their quality of life and remain in their own homes and communities. Nav-CARE builds upon years of collaborative work with community. It is is evidence-based and built on research led by Barbara Pesut,PhD Canada Research Chair in Health,Ethics and Diversity at UBC and Dr. Wendy Duggleby, Research Chair in Aging and Quality of Life, of the University of Alberta. After a successful 2-year pilot, the program is now expanding into communities across Canada with the potential to include Nelson, BC as one of project sites with successful funding.

1. The project will provide: Kidsport Nelson raises money locally and provincially through grants and fundraisers, to support our local children 6 to 18. Grant requests are made online or on hard-copy and submitted to our local Board of Directors, who then review each application. If a request is accepted then a check is written directly to the participating sport organization. All local sporting organizations must be current members of Sport BC. A child can be supported in more than one sport up to an overall maximum of $400.00 per calendar year.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: Children who might otherwise not be able to participate in a sport of their choice are given an opportunity to stay involved. This provides a healthy form of recreation, keeps the child involved in a positive activity they can enjoy with their peers, reduces isolation and helps to form relationships with coaches who can provide strong leadership, encouragement and support. For some kids this has provided a strong sense of success and given them long term goals and direction. It has been well documented and identified in many national health initiatives that it is very important for children be involve in recreational physical activities for their physical and mental health. Poverty is a primary barrier for children having access to community sports.

1. The project will provide: Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) is the designated regional surgical services center for the Kootenay Boundary. Approximately 1400 inpatient surgical cases and 5300 day surgeries are performed each year. There are 6 surgical Operating Rooms (OR), a Surgical Day Care Unit and an Ambulatory Care Unit at KBRH. Urological and ENT surgeries account for 23% of the total annual surgeries performed at KBRH.

KBRH has recently secured a new Urologist and is recruiting an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Surgeon. Medical equipment to support the new surgeons is required to support their delivery of surgical services at KBRH. The Urologist & ENT Support Project is a $105,100 project that will provide 2 Flexible Cystoscopes, 1 Ureteroscope, 3 Resectoscopes and 1 Endoscope Ear Set. The new, state of the art technology provided through these equipment purchases will build upon the present practices of our Urology and ENT teams and meet the demand of additional Urological and ENT cases at KBRH.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: In our rural area of the Kootenay Boundary, surgical teams are often limited to 1 surgeon per specialty. Increasing our current Urology and ENT teams to include an additional surgeon for each team will enable KBRH to better meet the healthcare needs of the residents of the Kootenay Boundary Region. Additional surgeons will bring new skills and the requested equipment upgrades will bring new technology to our area. As a result, some patients may not have to travel to Kelowna or Vancouver for their consultation or procedures. Supporting patients to remain in their communities is financially and clinically better care for the patients and their families. Additional surgeons at KBRH will also allow for continuous patient care and reduced wait list times. Overall, patients in the Kootenay Boundary will benefit greatly when our regional hospital increases its capacity to meet the needs of patients through full optimization of allocated consultation and operating room time.

1. The project will provide: This project will expand KCC™s service to all areas of the Columbia Basin through the scalable Peer to Peer (P2P) model of vehicle sharing. This will allow private vehicle owners to share their own vehicle through our blanket insurance and booking platform while earning income. It will incentivize the purchase and renting of electric vehicles and reduce the need to purchase heavy emission vehicles. This will allow KCC to meet existing service requests with minimal financial risk and expand throughout the region. This will be achieved by hiring a project coordinator who will develop educational material for Basin residents to understanding the significance of their GHG emissions from vehicle use on our environment. It will allow Basin residence to take action and reduce their community™s emission by either sharing their vehicle or becoming a driving member rather than purchasing additional vehicles such as a truck to gather firewood. Enhancements will be made to our current booking system that will accommodate split billing and regional display of available vehicles for rent. Partnerships with local governments, organizations, ridesharing groups and businesses will be established to market the opportunity across the region. Once a substantial base of share vehicles is formed in the first two years, the project will change people™s behaviors and have long-term contributions to reducing GHG on a regional scale.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: The project will address mobility restriction issues from lack of Greyhound service and public transit in rural areas while engaging citizens to participate in a shared economy and reducing the overall GHG emission produced. KCC will have the opportunity to expand to all Columbia Basin communities. KCC has been approached by many smaller communities including RDCK communities to have our services in their area. These requests have come from regional and city governments, social and environmental groups, and individuals. Our current model requires significant usage from the membership and has resulted in branches starting and being shut down. The P2P model has been piloted at KCC in the past year and has proven to have minimal financial risk allowing EV™s and specialized ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles to join the fleet without the capital and maintenance costs.

We aim to upgrade our aging technology to make the station more accessible to volunteers and the public and to increase the quality of our on-air product. We feel this project will better place us not just to continue and improve our existing services, but to position us as a "digital hub" in the West Kootenay. Our goal is to make our space and technology more accessible to as broad a range of backgrounds and abilities as possible. 2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: We are looking to make the following technical upgrades (in order of priority): 1. New digital mixing board in our broadcast studio. Kootenay Co-op Radio's current broadcast mixing board has been in service since we moved into our current building in 2006. It requires constant maintenance and is a subject of constant frustrations for volunteers and frequently affects delivery of our on-air product. It is held together, quite literally, by (electrical) tape. 2. Laptop and equipment dedicated to recording and live streaming of public events. 3. New play-out software and computer for our broadcast studio. The current play-out software was developed by volunteers in the very beginnings of KCR as is not adaptive to an age of rapid transition in the way that music is distributed and delivered.

1. The project will provide: The 3rd annual Kootenay Burlesque festival is happening on June 26 & 27 2020 in Nelson, BC. The purpose of the festival is to celebrate burlesque in all its various forms and to provide a paid opportunity for local and out of town performers a chance to have their talents showcased. All festival also exposes rural artists to world-renowed performers to help build and foster relations abroad. We will be showcasing forty different local and regional performers and will be bringing in five professional performers to headline the festival who will also teach classes during the day to provide educational opportunities for our community. This year we are bringing in World Champion Tassel Twirler Miss Brawling Beauty for Las Vegas, Lady Sapphire Noir and Caramel Knowledge from Los Angeles, Canadian regional headliner Tristan Ginger from Montreal and local drag artists The Dancing Legs from Nelson, BC. 2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: The KBF helps to promote and provide local artists with an opportunity to showcase their talents as well as pay artists for their work. We also provide educational opportunities for local performers that would otherwise not exist and we further promote interest in burlesque in our area as well as aim to bring tourism to Nelson every summer for the festival. Our festival also exposes rural artists to internationally renowed performers to further build relationships outside of our local area. The KBF understands that not everyone has the means to afford to attend shows and educational classes so we are providing one free week end pass to both showcase evenings and the full day of workshops & classes to a resident in the Columbia basin who would otherwise not be able to afford to attend.

This equipment will also benefit patients from across the region who are seen by visiting eye specialists from Trail, Kelowna and Vancouver. Kootenay Lake Hospital will remain the regional centre for all cataract surgeries.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: Dr. Maytom's impending retirement offers an opportunity to improve ophthalmology services in Nelson. New state of the art equipment will ensure that ophthalmologists have the ability to provide the best care possible to the patients in Nelson and area. The outreach program will increase the number of patients seen by ophthalmologists at Kootenay Lake Hospital.

1. The project will provide: The 9th annual Elephant Mountain Literary Festival is a festival for West Kootenay authors and readers. We bring nationally recognized authors to the Kootenays as well as notable local authors and present a program of workshops, readings, panels and interviews that explore the craft of writing, deal with issues important to local authors and readers and offer practical, professional coaching for the local writing community. This year™s festival is focused on nature and environmental writers and how this kind of storytelling can change a communities views on these issues and appeal to readers in a way that more traditional climate journalism cannot. We are also offering our second year of specialized workshops,in play writing and poetry. The Elephant Mountain Literary festival aims to both educate and promote local writing talent and we work with businesses and organizations both during the festival and the rest of the year (Otter books, the Nelson Public Library, Oxygen Arts Centre, NDAC, Touchstones etc.) to provide promotional events for local books and writers. As this is our 9th festival we will continue the work we have done to provide an inclusive and useful festival for the West Kootenays. Last year we had a 27% increase in ticket sales and with your support we can expand our audience even further in 2020.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: This year we will be presenting a program that highlights authors that write about the environment, climate change and nature, including local novelists Sarah Butler, Calgary environmental poet Jenna Butler and award winning outdoor journalist Jayme Moye (currently Whitewater™s author in residence). This is an issue that is of deep concern to our audience and the community at large. We are looking to explore how telling these stories, whether through journalism, poetry or fiction can influence people™s feelings about these issues and unify a community around taking action to protect our natural habitat. We identify the focus of our festival programming through our large and active organizing committee that pays close attention to the interests and concerns of our audience and we also provide feedback sheets during the festival that indicate to us what our audience wants to learn about and discuss.

1. The project will provide: Fastlane to Paradise, an original work for musical theatre by Nelson resident Doug Jamieson, was successfully premiered at the Capitol Theatre Oct. 31 “ Nov. 2, 2019. This ambitious project was the culminating effort of over 35 actors, musicians, designers and technicians. Quite simply, it was an enormous community project. When the sets were struck and the dust had settled, this unique, impressive theatre experience became a vivid memory for the 800 patrons who saw the show, and the 35 plus peo0ple who put it on, but it did not exist for so many more who missed it. Fortunately, there was raw video footage shot at two of the shows. This project will: ¢ Edit the raw footage shot at the performances on November 1 & 2, 2019, into a finished product. ¢ Record additional musical material as needed to replace some situations where the live recording was unusable. ¢ Distribute the video to at least 12 libraries and musical theatre companies in the Columbia Basin ¢ Distribute the video to at least 10 companies in major theatre centres (Edmonton: Citadel Theatre; Vancouver: Align Entertainment, Metro Theatre, The Vancouver Arts Club, Touchstone Theatre, etc.; Toronto: Mirvish Productions, CanStage, and more) to showcase the high quality of the arts that are achieved in the Columbia Basin.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: As mentioned above, the issue of preserving and sharing a major theatre production will be addressed by this project. If the production is not effectively documented in video, it exists only in the memory of the actual audience and Production Team. The issue/opportunity was identified by the Production Team that made the show happen.

1. The project will provide: This project brings people together in celebration of art, nature, and community. The Polka Dot Dragon Lantern Festival has been happening since 2014, and growing in size and popularity each year. Through a combination of lantern making workshops in the community and at local schools it creates an accessible platform for community art, where everyone can be an artist. In addition to these public lantern installations, the festival also promotes local artists and performers by offering a few honorariums each year to support their contributions to the festival.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: This festival takes place in February. It is not the easiest time to host a festival, but we have found there is a lack of variety of outdoor activities this time of year. This festival gives people the opportunity to come out and enjoy the outdoors in a different way. It also gives people a reason to come together and make art in preparation for the festival, which is beneficial for the community on many levels. The main way we have identified this need is by the overwhelmingly positive feedback we have received at the lantern making workshops and after each festival.

1. The project will provide: Massif Music Festival continues to bring diverse, underrepresented music to Nelson. We are celebrating our fifth anniversary of providing a unique, youth-friendly cultural opportunity that contributes to Nelson's recreational assets, enriches music appreciation, and supports local businesses. Massif brings up to 22 bands to Nelson, selling 300 tickets to people who patronize hotels, restaurants, bars and stores in September as tourism dollars decline. In bringing this underrepresented music to Nelson, we support Nelson's sustainability principle of cultural strength. As the only festival to promote music of the "heavy" genre, Massif has created a musical niche in Nelson. We are regarded as leaders in promoting gender diversity in British Columbia and western Canada. We create relationships between a music community full of interesting, culture-appreciating people and the community of Nelson, that otherwise would not be here. 2020 is our fifth annual festival and we continue to be sustained by local businesses who provide significant financial support. We strive to build symbiotic relationships between the business and art communities, and to present Nelson and the Kootenays as an area that promotes and supports diverse artists.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: Massif addresses three main opportunities: lack of youth access to live music, unbalanced gender representation in heavy music, and paid performances for local musicians.

These three main opportunities continue to be our drivers. We identified them through needs expressed from youth attending Kootenay Co-op Radio events, via several dozen years collective experience of going to live shows and seeing few women represented, and as musicians ourselves having few paid opportunities to play in this region.

1. The project will provide: With RDCK funding, Nelson Hospice will be able to provide compassionate care services through the delivery of a Day Hospice Program. We will be serving in between 20 to 40 palliative patients and up to 80 caregivers per year from Nelson and all outlying areas, including the East Shore, North Shore, Blewett, Beasely, Bonnington, and the Slocan Valley. Individuals living in rural areas will have increased access to care services as well as meal preparation, peer support, and complimentary therapeutic supports like massage, acupuncture and counselling. This program will help to build an integrated approach to care for residents in a large sector of the basin. Our second year of programming was very successful and we found the operation of the Program in its new location helped us increase our outreach and delivery in our community and will continue to help us find other funding support for future years to ensure sustainability.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: One of the main goals of the program is to increase quality of life for upstream palliative patients and provide knowledge to support their transitions to new levels and locations for care, connecting day hospice guests and caregivers to community supports. This need was identified in both local research studies performed by the Kalein Centre, and by the provincial End of Life Care Action Plan. The Nelson Day Hospice Program is designed to deal with the lack of support for upstream palliative individuals and their caregivers, who have more emotional needs and

fewer supports. It will also provide respite for caregivers in a supported environment. Upstream palliative individuals and their caregivers, including those residing at Mountain Lakes, their families and caregivers in the Nelson & District area will be invited to participate in this once per week program.

Our first opening will be a "Spectator" opening featuring performance artists from throughout Nelson and District. Our second opening will be an "Immersive" opening, with free educational sessions, collaborative art and more. ArtWalk attracts customers, tourists, arts lovers to local businesses along the main streets of Nelson by presenting the work of 35 local artists in 20 business locations as venues/galleries from June 26th-September 4th. We will be hosting a closing street dance in collaboration in order to further stimulate sales and provide a cultural event for those September tourists to attend. We will work with the Youth Centre and the Nelson Youth Action Committee through our Youth Initiative that sees emerging youth artists receiving hands-on experience with mounting an art show. In 2020 we will continue to implement this same hands-on, educational strategy in collaboration with Kutenai Art Therapy Institute's Saturday drop in Studio, who™s participants generally face homelessness, expanding our community support and outreach. All of our events are completely free of charge and fully accessible to all members of the public.

The community building that is created as a result of events like ArtWalk is instrumental in times of Emergency Response. Barrier free public art events have proven to strengthen the social ties that support community resiliency in times of disaster.

1. The project will provide: In the fall of 2016, NDAC hosted an Arts and Poverty Forum. That roundtable discussion determined that a major need of local and regional artists is education on the business of being an artist. The first RASW was held in 2017, and it has become an annual event, featuring fully accessible educational opportunities to over 300 artists in our region.

RASW provides artists with education in areas that they might not be comfortable accessing. Artists are provided with a free weekend symposium featuring speakers from the business community (mortgage broker, marketing expert, financial planner, curator, lawyer etc) as well as roundtable discussions focusing on the local artists™ concerns. NDAC also works to bring in speakers from provincial funding bodies. This allows for artists to connect directly with funders, building relationships that can be invaluable for career opportunities.

In 2019 we offered our first Emergency Preparedness for Artists session. We will continue to offer this session annually to ensure that all regional artists have an opportunity to educate themselves on what to do in the case of a natural disaster.

This year we hope to document the sessions and house them on our website. Then they can be accessed free of charge 24/7, creating even more accessibility to education for all artists in our region.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: Many artists can find the business of art daunting. Not understanding the business of art can be a massive barrier. RASW provides all local artists with the opportunity to become more comfortable with the business of art. Sessions have included marketing, insurance, investment banking, grant writing. Every session is different and provides a perspective on business that artists of all disciplines can engage with.

Rural Artists find it challenging to connect with funders. 2019 saw RASW feature speakers from Creative BC and the BC Touring Council. This interaction is rarely afforded in rural communities, and provided local artists with the opportunity to directly communicate and build relationships with provincial funders that are based in the lower mainland. As a result of Creative BC attending the Rural Support Weekend, a community roundtable was created and provided local arts and culture organizations with the opportunity to communicate their desires for funding.

1. The project will provide: NaiB will further develop a healthy community by empowering individuals and organisations thereby building capacity to address issues related to the Determinants of Health (social, economic, environmental, physical).

This project provides critical coordination that will enable activities designed to further work in two priority areas:

Community Engagement around Emerging Issues ¢ Convene round tables to discuss and strategically plan community responses to emerging issues. For example, based on issues identified during the last municipal election, we convened three multi-sectoral climate crisis round tables which resulted in 47 participants meeting and identifying the need for a Social Innovation Hub that would identify, create and test initiatives to address local climate crisis issues - which the City of Nelson has secured funds to pilot. ¢ Convene an annual reverse forum with local elected officials to discuss community issues. Some city councillors identified this as a way to stay in touch, informed, and accountable, in a general way, to the community.

Tracking Local Key Poverty Related Data

¢ Take stock of and Map current services/initiatives that reduce poverty or interact with people experiencing poverty. This will identify gaps and provide a baseline to measure movement as NaiB and the community work to implement poverty reducing initiatives. ¢ Calculate Nelson™s 2020 living wage as a way to promote and provide awareness on the importance of living wages in Nelson.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: Aside from projects listed above, Nelson at its Best has identified emerging, multi-sectoral issues that include the effects of a rising minimum wage, increase in discrimination as our population diversifies, and high rates of single parents living in poverty. We will also continue work on a community needs/issues survey to help identify future organizational directions that has been initiated, but not conducted, due to decreased funding in last year™s CIP grant.

Our community development approach pierces silos organizations and sectors work within which often weaken rather than strengthen our community. We will continue to:

¢ Identify community determinants of health/quality of life issues as they emerge ¢ Generate research and information on these issues ¢ Build on local capacity by engaging other organizations and the larger community on these issues and the inter- connectedness of sectors in resolving them ¢ Act as a catalyst by providing recommendations for action to appropriate community and governmental agencies

1. The project will provide: Winter Kickoff will be in it's fourth year in 2020. The Event is a culmination of events happening around the entire region for a period of about two weeks. Last year from Nov 19 - Dec 7 there were over 25 events, with over 50 sponsors donating time, money and/or products. In 2019 The Carnival was created, as part of Winter Kickoff, to help draw more visitors to the region at a very slow business time (pre winter). It was a spectacle of sorts, with an array of local artists, musicians, light technicians, dancers, Santa, culinary samples and beverages. This year we will host The Carnival at The Station in Railtown, the perfect location with access to power, washrooms, coffee shop and artisan shopping. Marketing will begin in October using google ads, social media, print, radio and posters. The recognized Snow Dump will also occur. Four individuals, overseen by NKLTourism, will manage the marketing and the event with the assistance of technicians for lights, audio and tent assembly.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: The Carnival was a huge success in 2019, resulting in many people leaving the site because of a long lineup to get in, and congestion of traffic at the highway intersection. We are intending to run The Carnival on a Saturday in 2020, rather than a Friday night, and begin it a bit earlier, for families to visit Santa, and have traffic monitors at the highway intersection and at Railtown.

Inside the tent it was difficult to see the performances due to a low ceiling, and low stage floor. At this time we are working with Headphone Entertainment to find a solution to this visual impairment, which may be the additional of monitors around the tents.

The two entrance and exit points were congested, due to the heavy flow of people. Better entrance and exit signs will be put in place, and additional volunteers inside and out to help move people around the site.

1. The project will provide: The Nelson Nordic Ski Club (NNSC) is a volunteer based non-profit society dedicated to promoting cross-country skiing and snowshoeing as part of an active healthy lifestyle in the West Kootenays. The NNSC™s ability to successfully provide their services and programs is dependent on the Club's grooming machine. Ungroomed trails prevent or reduce the programs that NNSC can offer. The present grooming machine has reached a lifespan where reliability is compromised. Costly maintenance is impacting the financial viability of the Club. A new machine is required to continue the Club's successful operations and employment of staff. The NNSC has therefore received a quote from each of the two groomer manufacturers in Canada to purchase a new machine for $327,000, in time for the 2020/2021 ski season. The Club is actively fundraising with confirmed funding from Community Works (Areas E and F) of $40,000, NNSC $50,000 and Community Development grants from Areas A, H and I totaling $4,500. The Club has applied to SIDIT and launched a fundraising campaign to membership and community. If successful at reaching $125,000, the Club will qualify to receive $40,000 from CBT Community Development program to reach their half way goal of $163,500. The club will then apply to BC Capital Gaming in July 2020 for matching funds similar to other successful Nordic clubs for a machine.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: - NNSC's 2010 Prinoth machine has 6,000 hours of use, when maintenance becomes more costly ($20,000/year) and depreciation occurs faster. - The machine was recently out of service for 16 days! 1. The project will provide: Our club requires funding to offer training and improve opportunities for the youth of our area. Our regular season runs from September 1st 2020 thru to May 31 2021 and during this time we require a large amount of Pool rental at NDCC. Unfortunately, lane rental at NDCC is extremely expensive and is surprisingly one of the highest pool rental rates in the Province of BC. This causes significant difficulty for our club annually; without funding assistance, we struggle to offer quality youth sport at reasonable prices for local families. In addition, a group of our swimmers has qualified for BC Summer Games occurring July 2020 in the Lower Mainland. This requires additional pool and coaching expenses outside our regular season, which becomes very cost-prohibitive for those involved. All CBT funding would be utilized for Pool, coaching and competition travel expenses for swimmers. With funding for training and competition attendance, young athletes gain significant life skills such as teamwork, confidence and self- esteem, which they bring home for the betterment of our local community

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: The issue of the high cost of pool rental at NDCC in Nelson to train youth swimmers would be aided with CBT funding, by offsetting costs and thus lowering the overall expense for youth swimmers to participate in our programs. We strive to keep our monthly fees low thus enabling more youth to participate.

1. The project will provide: This coming September will be our 18th annual Queen City Cruise and Car Show. Many entrants register at the Chamber of Commerce parking lot on Friday afternoon and socialize prior to the Friday night cruise. The Cruise provides entertainment for well over a thousand spectators as the vehicles navigate the city streets. Saturday morning has the cars, trucks and motorcycles park along Baker Street and adjacent streets of Hall, Josephine and Kootenay. In 2019 there were 386 entries with 218 being visitors outside the local Nelson, Castlegar, Trail and Kaslo area. Judging is from 10:00 to 15:00, with about 10,000 spectators viewing the vehicles throughout the morning and afternoon. Following the judging and trophy presentations, many entries join in the Poker Run up to Balfour, ending at Mountain Lake Seniors Community. 2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: Last fall our club became aware of the Kootenay Lake Hospital needing a $25,000 ECG machine. In conjunction with this year's Queen City Cruise, we have been granted a Gaming Licence to raffle an engine block as a fund raiser for the Hospital Foundation. We will be able to raise $20,000 through ticket sales, and hope that sponsors will donate enough money to cover the raffle's fixed costs as well as the additional $5,000. Our goal is to donate the full $25,000 to the Hospital Foundation. The hiring of local entertainers on Friday and Saturday to perform for the entrants and spectators provides a festive atmosphere and supports local artists. Additional funds would allow us to increase the entertainment budget. All additional funds stay in the community.

1. The project will provide: The Branch facilities have been under maintained for decades. The primary objective of this project is to raise our current facility to current health and safety standards for our seniors well being. Specifically our project will bring (1) the Kitchen equipment and facilities up to current standards for safety (current building code, health, energy efficiency) and overall effectiveness, and (2) new flooring which will be environmentally safe (cover asbestos), and level (transitions, cracks, cuts and seams etc). These improvements will be achieved by contracting with qualified tradesmen selected through an open tender bid process. The tenders/bid process, the actual work done, evaluation of work done, and project completion reporting will be managed by an approved Committee of the Executive committee of Branch 51. Committee members include an Accountant, Engineer and Operations Manager, all retired.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: The membership and executive of Nelson Seniors Branch 51 has identified the inadequacy of our Kitchen facility, and the unsafe condition of our flooring. Currently seniors need to bring in catered food for social events because of the inadequacy of the kitchen facility. Our kitchen does not comply with current Electrical standards (frequent blown breakers, inadequate size and number of circuits, etc), and sub standard ventilation. There is lead based paint in the

Kitchen. Please see the City of Nelson's "Hazardous Building Materials Assessment Report" 2016, by Pinchin West dated Feb 19, 2016.

Level flooring is required for safe wheelchair and cane accessibility and mobility. Many seniors endure mobility issues preventinglimiting access to our services. Bringing the Kitchen and Flooring to standard will make the facility more inviting, encouraging increased social connection, increase individual comfort and encourage increased attendance by seniors.

1. The project will provide: At the Nelson Waldorf School it is our aim to include all families that wish to attend our school, no matter what their economic standing is, and experience the Waldorf model of education. We do not want our tuition to be something that holds others back from joining in our school community, so for many years we have been offering a Tuition Modification Program to those who demonstrate the need through our application process. This allows many families to join our school that would not normally be able to, for example low-income families, single-parent families, parents continuing their education, or families going through a tough financial year. As a specialty school and not a private school, we only receive 50% of the funding that fully public school do although we meet all the Ministry of Education standards and beyond.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: Our school has had low enrollment numbers for various reasons and we would like to see our numbers increase. We would like see more families come to our school who might not consider it due to our tuition costs. For example, Wildflower school has many students, which is based on Waldorf principles, but is fully funded from the government which allows more families to experience that model of education. Having more students will also allow us to add more extra subjects to our curriculum, for example adding another language besides French. We have identified these issues due to the increasing amount of tuition requests that we receive yearly as well as feedback from

parents. Some challenges that have been expressed are rising rent and housing costs plus other rising living expenses, temporary family hardship, low-income families and single-parent families. We awarded $50,000 last year and would like to raise to $60,000 as we did not meet the demand of $100,000.

1. The project will provide: This project consists of the development of a new multi-generational park to be located at Rosemont Park (Art Gibbons Park) located at 505 West Beasley Street in Nelson, BC. This wilderness-based park presently provides several features for youth and the vision is to enhance its use and accessibility for the entire family and community: in March, 2014, the regional Skate Board park was opened at this location adjacent to a mountain bike skills park and there are presently restrooms, rough pathways, picnic tables, and benches. This ready-made green space with untouched natural beauty is fully accessible to community members by transit, biking, on foot and/or by car. We envision its enhancement for youngsters and elders alike through the addition of wheelchair accessible pathways and a nature-based playground. The Rotary Club of Nelson Daybreak is presently fund raising $100,000.00 towards Phase 1 of this project in partnership with the City of Nelson. We presently have $42,280.00 raised for playgrounds.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: o Reduce boredom and isolation; encourage people's physical activity. o Improve accessibility for children (including those with disabilities) for outside sports/activities with playgrounds supporting creative play. o Encourage families to spend time together. o Improve access for elders, families to enjoy nature with youth, children.

o Build the infrastructure for a regional recreational destination. o Wilderness meets urban in multi-purpose environment for all ages. In September, 2018 the City of Nelson and Daybreak Rotary completed a Community Needs survey for the Multi- generational park with over 200 respondents representing over 500 Nelson residents - hard copy or online. Results: in favour (87%) with the #1 priority being natural playgrounds. We have also received several letters of support (attached) for this project. 1. The project will provide: PAST EXPERIENCE: Through the 5-Year, BC-wide delivery of our multi-award-winning Interactive Dance Awareness Program, we discovered: -There is a systematic problem with racism and discrimination in children and youth populations in schools -As artists, we have the capacity to inspire young people to become positive contributors to their families, schools, friendships, and communities. If we can learn to get along and work together at a young age, we will more prone to do so as adults.

LONG-TERM & LEGACY RELATIONSHIPS: In Interactive Dance Awareness, we balance the promotion of positive social values with art culture & physical activity. However, the program only generally targets a variety of social issues (listed above), since receiving Leon and Thea Koerner Award and BC Arts Council Funds to support for design and pilot-delivery of a more targeted socially conscious program (AIP), now we are fundraising (this application) to delivery a non-pilot delivery (full delivery) in the RDCK.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: SYSTEMIC ISSUES ADDRESSED: Racism, discrimination, intolerance, and hate.

ISSUES ADDRESSED BY YOUTH: Our program presenters are young people themselves (15 - 25 years old) and in coordination with discussions and reflections that are entrenched in past programming (like Interactive Dance Awareness), presenters, participants, and school staff have deduced that: fear of the other, income disparity, inability to work together, racial divides, societal divides, and the lack of social skills to actively show inclusion, friendship, kindness are holding racism, discrimination, intolerance, and hate in place.

ALSO: AIP takes an innovative and inspiring approach to actively engage RDCK™s young people with professional artists and arts and culture programming. The innovative-nature of our program is the BLENDED SOCIAL-CULTURAL VALUE were we ensure we BALANCE the promotion of art and culture with disrupting systemic behaviours in addition to physical activity.

1. The project will provide: Take a Hike helps vulnerable youth ages 15-18 in the Columbia Basin to develop social and emotional skills, improve their mental and physical health and well-being, and achieve academic success, leading to high school graduation. In the long term, this will assist youth to become resilient individuals who can successfully navigate the challenges of young adulthood so they can grow into contributing members of the community. The program also benefits participants™ families (including through family therapy) and the wider community. This will be achieved through a proven, evidence-based program model delivered throughout the school year for 15 full-time participants. As of 2019/20, we introduced Extended Services to share access to Take a Hike's counselling, outdoor adventure, and community involvement services with an additional 10-15 students in the Kootenay-Columbia Learning Centre community. Youth engage in:

- Clinical Counselling: A full-time embedded clinical counsellor helps youth build social and emotional skills and improve mental health and well-being. - Adventure-Based Learning (ABL): Youth develop skills and resilience through land-based learning during one day each week and two multi-day wilderness trips.

- Community Involvement: Connects youth to their community and allows them to give back and gain work experience through weekly volunteering. - Academics: Youth complete all classes required for graduation through personal education plans and experiential learning.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: Youth are referred to Take a Hike after struggling to succeed in the mainstream school system because of mental health or behavioural challenges, past trauma, or chronic non-attendance, and most experience risk factors that make them vulnerable to social exclusion. These issues act as barriers to participants™ success and, without additional support, can mean that they fail to graduate high school - often at a long-term cost to themselves, their families and the community.

Prior to Take a Hike being offered in the West Kootenay area, an 18-month assessment was undertaken to determine need and viability. This included stakeholder interviews, and research into available programs and local community needs. The assessment identified a strong need and local support, both of which continue today. Together with KCLC, we recently identified an opportunity to strengthen the capacity of both Take a Hike and KCLC's offerings by sharing services in a more formalized way.

1. The project will provide: The NDYC Gardens and Cooks program is an extension of our Eazy-Eats program which provides youth with the opportunity to learn valuable cooking skills from scratch. This year we have decided to build upon Eazy-Eats and install a new garden in front of the Youth Centre. We will tear down the existing garden boxes and install a new fenced-in garden. Additionally, we will add a vertical garden to the outside walls of the Youth Centre. This program will be designed to educate participants that include children from our out-of-school programming and youth who participate in Eazy-Eats on how to start, harvest and preserve an urban garden. We will use the garden™s supplies to provide healthy, wholesome snacks for our out-of-school programming and ingredients for Eazy-Eats. Eazy-Eats runs all year round; we would like to purchase a home vegetable growing kit to be in the communal kitchen to use all winter so Eazy-Eats participants can grow herbs and vegetables. For harvesting season, Eazy-Eats participants will learn how to preserve the produce through jams, soups and sauces, and canning. All of the food canned in the canning program will be used in our Eazy-eats program throughout the winter. We are teaching children and youth essential skills that will guide them through to adulthood.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: This program aims to fill identified gaps in youth services around access to food, healthy eating, necessary cooking skills, and food knowledge to support these youth toward greater security and autonomy. Community development

and youth urban gardening garden projects counter a host of contemporary social problems, including social isolation. By promoting outdoor physical activity, gardens support public health efforts to improve community well- being. This community garden will contribute to broader, long-term change. The garden will also stimulate neighbourhood revitalization with the creation of a more beautiful and welcoming space. With the availability of unhealthy choices at low costs, this project will teach children and youth how they can contribute to being more healthy by growing and preparing their own food.

1. The project will provide: The Kootenay Swim Club provides the competitive swim experience to over 75 youth in the RDCK. Our project hopes to increase participation in swimming for new families and youth in the Kootenays. We hope to achieve this through outreach into the New Canadian population and subsidies to these families who may not have the financial means to participate.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: As our New Canadians numbers from other continents increases in the Kootenays, locally our sport is not seeing many of these new families participating in swimming. With our many lakes and rivers in the area, and year round activities occurring near them, the ability to swim is paramount for safety and to enjoying the recreational opportunities here in the Kootenays. As our club numbers have doubled in the last year, we are seeing an almost zero enrollment by new Canadians. A lot of these families move here with children and teens who are not serviced appropriately by the Red Cross lessons available through the pools. 1. The project will provide: The West Kootenay Pony Club (WKPC) is a comprehensive educational program in riding, horse care, and stable management. The WKPC works to educate youth from ages 6-25 by learning responsibility, citizenship, and self-confidence through the management and care of horses. The WKPC emphasizes both theoretical and practical Stable Management and horseback riding instruction. For Stable Management, the WKPC meets twice a month, January to April, to learn all aspects of equine theory and topics like feeding, first aid, horse care, and safety. For the riding portion and practical components of Stable Management, the WKPC will run three camps, one clinic, one fun jumping day, and achievement testing in 2020 with local and out-of-region, Certified coaches. Stable management, clinics, camps, fun events, and competitions will continue in the 2021 season, but have not been planned yet.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: Interest in learning about and riding horses continues to steadily increase among youth in our area. Pony Club is a highly reputable, internationally-recognized program that promotes practices and education to ensure the safety of young athletes and proper treatment of horses in equine sport. There is a huge amount of responsibility that is required in horse ownership and/or involvement that is not always considered by new or 'green' horse families. The WKPC offers a solid foundation of safety, knowledge, and experience, covering all aspects of horse care. It is also a more affordable option for youth to be introduced and involved in horses as owning their own horse is not mandatory. In addition, through the WKPC, under-utilized horses are often connected with new riders, creating positive partnerships for owners, riders, and horses.

1. The project will provide: The project will engage and educate residents across the West Kootenays on old growth forest ecosystems. We will further refine and update educational materials developed in the first phase of the project in 2020 -- both online and printed materials. Our brochure outlining the importance of this ecosystem and identifying local trails for hiking in old growth forest will be given out at community events across the region during 2020, such as farmers' markets, community festivals, and at outreach tables at special events.

We expect to reach over 10,000 people over seven months through in-person education and outreach. Materials will also be distributed online to EcoSociety's 9000 person email list, our social media reaching over 5000 people, and through paid advertizing.

The project will help local residents and visitors to the region understand the importance of the old stands of inland temperate rainforest and the wildlife, like grizzlies, caribou and wolverine, that relies on this ecosystem. It will also help them access local old growth forest stands to connect with nature and enjoy gorgeous hiking.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: Old growth stands of inland temperate rainforest are globally unique to this area. They are becoming fewer and continuing to decline. They hold spiritual and recreational importance for residents and are rich in biodiversity and carbon sequestration. Outreaching and educating residents on this important ecosystem at community events and through online communications is an important first step in bringing attention to their existence and how to access old growth forests.

Connecting residents of the area to this ecosystem through self-guided hikes will create a deeper understanding of the ecosystem and sense of place, as well as promote environmental stewardship and celebrate the natural world.

This opportunity has been identified by the EcoSociety Board of Directors, its Conservation Advisory Committee, and EcoSociety members and supporters in the region.

1. The project will provide: Already nine local governments in the West Kootenays have signed on to support the transition to 100% renewable energy at the community-level by 2050, including the RDCK board which represents the whole RDCK. EcoSociety is working with these local governments to take the next steps to plan and implement this commitment: a regional-municipal joint strategy to map out how we achieve 100% renewable energy by 2050 with implementation milestones, including policies and and carbon pollution reductions targets. The strategy will include identifying challenges and solutions to overcome barriers, regulations, deregulations, incentives, and provincial and federal-level policy changes, and will include ongoing expert and community engagement through in-person workshops, outreach tables, a survey, and kitchen-table workbook, so community ideas will be identified and integrated.

This will be achieved by EcoSociety continuing to work with municipal staff and elected leaders in a formalized collaboration supported by other groups like Community Energy Association and Renewable Cities to ensure the strategy meets the needs of their communities, with EcoSociety facilitating, researching best practices and drafting.

A draft plan will be released in June and the community will be engaged to further refine the plan to suit communities strengths and needs. A final plan will be released for councils in December. This and a playbook to replicate this project will be developed and distributed to other local governments beyond this region to adapt to their local contexts.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: Kootenay communities care deeply about addressing climate impacts and providing economic development opportunities for residents so they can stay to live, work and play. Developing a regional-municipal strategy to transition to 100% renewable energy at the community level allows our region to address climate change and showcase Kootenay innovation and leadership. Over 11,500 residents and 112 businesses have said they want to be meaningfully engaged in 100% renewable energy strategy development.

Having opportunities for workers in renewable energy and energy efficiency jobs is essential for Kootenay residents to live and thrive. Developing a strategy that attracts and keeps businesses in the region and employs local people in the renewable energy transition will benefit the region now for decades. Conversations with thousands of people across the region during over the past four years have shown that transitioning to renewable energy for healthy, safe and strong communities is essential for families.

1. The project will provide: In collaboration with Climate Strike Canada (CSC), a Canadian youth climate activist group, Yasodhara Ashram is hosting a four day facilitated retreat. The intent is to offer space for CSC members from BC and Alberta to bond, relax and collectively plan the next steps for their movement. It is also an opportunity for CSC members to learn skills in self-care and anxiety management. 2019 was a galvanizing year for these youth. Many CSC members in the Kootenays, across BC and Alberta led weekly strikes, rallies and information sessions in their communities. With a record level of activity, time is needed to determine how future action can effectively happen. CSC has been self-organizing primarily through online platforms only. As such, many of these groups, despite having worked together for over a year now, have not yet met in person. In giving them the opportunity to meet, plan and bond in person, they will form stronger connections and be more effective in their organizing moving forward. This retreat is intended to balance between planning, organisation, relaxation and reflection. Morning sessions facilitated by external trainers will focus on strategic planning. Afternoons will focus on relaxation, self-reflection, anxiety management and self-care.

2. Project will address issues or opportunities pertaining to: The rapid growth of the youth climate action movement has offered youth the opportunity to be one of the most influential voices in environmental activism. However, it has also led to a significant increase in responsibility and stress in these young activists. Youth in general, and especially those on the frontlines of climate action, are often falling into periods of climate despair. There is a need to learn tools to help cope with the realities of the work these youth are engaging with, and empower themselves to take inspired action. CSC identified their need to host a regional meeting. CSC members are clear that they need to pause, re-evaluate and collectively decide on the most impactful steps forward. YAS has been in contact with regional leaders about what the needs are for the group. It is from these discussions that the issues and opportunities to be addressed have been identified.
