This younger colleague was Joseph Glanvill, and Beale remarked that if Glanvill kept “off Origen,” his work might be successful. Glanvill, Beale added,“hath a flowry pen, & may doe well if we can ballaste him from Origenian Platonisme & Extravagant adven- tures.”1 Beale was referring to the teachings of the Church Father Origen of Alexandria, which had long been a part of a theological legacy with which independent-minded thinkers and scholars were able to combat the bleak orthodoxies of Augustinian an- thropology.
