  • FINDING OUR TRUE WILLIAM by Nancy J
FINDING OUR TRUE WILLIAM by Nancy J. Lawson, 13 Sep 2017 My name is Nancy Jo Lawson from Cross Lanes, West Virginia and I am a descendant of William Lawson of Montrose Scotland. My Lawson line is: William (1733), Travis (1766), John (1791), William Banks (1825), George Washington (1865), John Dolan (1904), and Roy Lee (1935). I started researching my Lawson ancestry after stumbling upon the Lawson Family Heritage Program website in 2007. The LFHP led me to Patti Lawson’s tremendous Lawson Family Database and all the incredible research done by others, especially Bill Porter’s book, William Lawson – A Scottish Rebel (1). Like many descendants of “The Rebel”, I embraced the story of young William of Montrose and his perilous journey to America as a Jacobite prisoner aboard the ship Gildart. And although many more experienced and knowledgeable researchers had already agreed upon this narrative, I wanted to discover the facts for myself. I wanted to experience the excitement of finding those historical records on my own. In 2008 my journey began in earnest by searching in cemeteries and courthouses from Breathitt County, Kentucky to Scott County, Virginia. I wasn’t really looking for anything new; I was just following a trail that many others had traveled before me. While I have been able to confirm much of what is already known about our William, there are two facts stated by many that I have not been able to reconcile. The first is that his birth year was 1731. In History of the Wood Family in Virginia, by M.

Clan MAXWELL ARMS Argent, a saltire Sable, (as displayed on the Arms of the Earl of Nithsdale) viz:- Argent, an eagle displayed Sable, beaked and membered Gules, Nithsdale), surmounted of an escutcheon of the first, charged with a saltire of the Second (Maxwell), the escutcheon surcharged in the center with an urcheon, Or (Herries) CREST A stag Proper, attired Argent, couchant before a holly bush Proper MOTTO Refiresco (I grow strong again) SUPPORTERS Two stags Proper, attired Argent M accus Well, a pool in the River Tweed by Kelso, is claimed as the origin for this name. Maccus was believed to be a Norse chief who lived in the reign of David I. Sir John Maxwell, Chamberlain of Scotland, died without issue and was succeeded by his brother, Aymer, from whose sons sprang many branches of this family throughout the south-west of Scotland. Sir Herbert Maxwell swore fealty to Edward I of England in the Ragman Roll of 1296. His son, Eustace, held Caerlaverock Castle as a vassal of the English, but later followed Robert the Bruce to Bannockburn in 1314. His descendent, another Sir Herbert, was created Lord Maxwell around 1440, taking his seat as Lord of Parliament. From his second son descended the Maxwells of Monrieth, who were later to be created baronets in 1681. The fifth Lord intrigued with Henry VII of England, although by 1542 James V had appointed him warden of the marches. Maxwell was captured at the Battle of Solway Moss in the same year. John, the seventh Lord, remained a devout Catholic throughout the Reformation, and his name was linked with a number of plots to restore Mary, Queen of Scots to her throne.

The Scottish Nebraskan Newsletter of the Prairie Scots Chief’s Message Summer 2021 Issue I am delighted that summer is upon us finally! For a while there I thought winter was making a comeback. I hope this finds you all well and excited to get back to a more normal lifestyle. We are excited as we will finally get to meet in person for our Annual Meeting and Gathering of the Clans in August and hope you all make an effort to come. We haven't seen you all in over a year and a half and we are looking forward to your smiling faces and a chance to talk with all of you. • The Hunters' Tryst
The Hunters’ Tryst Publisher Billy Hunter C.O. Editor Bill Hunter 1st Edition—Internet November 2006 Dear Clans folk It has been sometime since I wrote to you all and hope to find every Hunter in good heart. I know you will join me in thanking all our Clan members who have attended Games over the last summer, for their support of our Clan and their enthusiasm and time and effort. It is very much appreciated. Being a member of Clan Hunter should be a pleasure and interesting. Meeting up at Highland Games is a great way to re-affirm our interest in our Scottish heri- tage, meet those with similar interest and have a good time. Recently, the St. Andrew’s Society of Manchester have invited myself to be the First lady Chief Guest of the Society. They are a very prestigious St. Andrews Society, which started in 1876. It is a very great honour for myself as Clan Chief and for the Hunter Clan. The dinner will be held on St. Andrew’s day, which is exceptional too. Next year. 2007, is our International Gathering at Hunterston Castle. It is also the celebration of the Hunters having been at Hunterston for 900 years It is interesting to think back to the days when the first Hunter, Norman Venator arrived at Hunterston, which was then marsh and woodland and to look at the Hunters now, who live in many countries. I’m sure that they would be proud that we have grown in numbers and still value our ancestry.
