Unfortunately still not a lot to report but we have recruited two new parish councillors who are Alastair Ross (Cliff House) and Ian Langham who lives at Yedingham (Ian has been a Thanks to everyone who has sent in a contribution to this issue. There are now several councillor before on our parish council). ways to stay in touch with what's going locally, especially now that restrictions are starting

to ease and, dare I say, we can plan again! As well as the active Village Hub on Facebook, We have also now got the Vehicle Activated Sign installed. It is being shared with there is an Ebberston Village website, which also hosts the more recent back issues of the and Wilton and will be rotated around the villages. Hopefully this will reduce the amount of newsletter and a Twitter account too. speeding through the villages.

The newsletter is an outlet to share information about and report on the activities of all the groups and organisations across the parish, so I hope it is valuable for you. I am keenly aware that it is quite Ebberston-focused, so if anyone from Yedingham or Bickley would like to redress the balance, just get in touch!

All feedback, suggestions and contributions welcome. Everything should have a clear parish focus but they can be photos, a bit of hidden history, your favourite walk ... The newsletter is published quarterly and details of how to get in touch are at the bottom. https://mailchi.mp/dd83cefdf3d2/8ydlfmnypg-4629485 1/17 https://mailchi.mp/dd83cefdf3d2/8ydlfmnypg-4629485 2/17 13/07/2021 The Parish Newsletter - May 2021 13/07/2021 The Parish Newsletter - May 2021

Thank you to everyone who baked or bought from our bake sale last month in total we raised an amazing £426.39!! A special thanks to our committee members The Eyre’s for organising and baking – a delicious way to raise much needed money. A few spoke to me after and said they hadn’t realised and in the future, we will be a little more organised and either pop a notice in advance in the notice board or tie it into the newsletter but this time it was a rather quick turnaround!

If you’d like to get involved in fundraising for Ebberston Sportsfield or could spare a little time here and there to help maintain the park, then please get in touch with myself or Liam (Chairman) – 01723 850226. It would be great to have new people on board to help us keep the Sportsfield as nice as possible.

I end with a gentle reminder that if you visit the park or know friends that do, please remember and urge your friends to leave a little sum in our donation box when you exit. Unfortunately, despite seeing lots of cars parked and the park busy (even in the snow!), over 7 months we’ve only raised £83.85. We survive on grants, donations, fundraising and our committee's time, so a small sum really can go a long way.

St John the Baptist Church, Yedingham Report by Joy & Roger Sugden Contact: The Vicarage - 01944 758305 www.buckrosecarrs.org.uk

The mild winter (on the whole), with the exception of April frosts, have enabled us to enjoy some lovely spells of blue sky and sunshine. This spring-like weather has benefitted all the bulbs about our villages. The verges and School green have paid tribute to Wordsworth's famous poem in their profusion of daffodils, following the carpet of snowdrop and lifted everyone’s spirits.

Youth Group Villagers were disappointed not to be able to celebrate Easter in church again this year. Jeni Loosley - [email protected] Though, this might well have resulted in a D.I.Y. event in the absence of a vicar. We trust Rev. Joe , along with his family, is finding his feet in the Thornton-le-Dale Benefice. We are looking at a relaunch of the Youth Group following a lengthy closure due to the pandemic. Can people please get in touch if you or someone you know would like to We are all looking forward to the gradual easing of restrictions and aware of our need to err attend so that we can gauge interest. It has still not been possible for the WI to meet in person. However we try to keep in touch with our members through newsletters and the occasional zoom meeting. Our poetry and prose group has continued to meet by zoom but hopefully if the fine weather continues we can meet six in a garden and then more fully from May. Other WI events continue and Rosemary is to be our delegate for the Spring Council, again taking place on zoom. The Ebberston Community Coffee Morning National Annual Council was due to be held in the Albert Hall in June but has now become Michael Peck (Chair) - 01723 850214 [email protected] a virtual event. what was "normal" and the end of a very long dark tunnel draws ever nearer. So we look forward in the hope of being able, once again, to welcome YOU to our Community Coffee Morning on the third Wednesday of the month.

For the remainder of the group stages, we are also drawn away, until we hopefully reach the regional stages.

It is to be hoped that the only other invitational cup (Driffield) will restart in 2021. It's a far cry from 10 years ago, when there were knock out competitions at Pickering, Malton, Kirkbymoorside and Snainton, to name but a few, plus several 6-a-side events. Sadly its a sign of the times and the apparent lack of commitment by players, as evidenced by the loss of around 3 divisions, 30 teams, from the Beckett and Derwent Valley Leagues. The 2010 London Olympics aspiration, to get more people into sport has been successful, but instead of "into," read, "watching" ideally with alcohol in hand. Rant over.

As this goes to press, so does the Clubs fixture card, with its distribution to follow, hopefully by the end of April. Dennis Vasey will have a stock of these in due course.
