FCS WEEK 3 POLLS The Citadel monicker dates back to the school’s founding, when it was stated that The Citadel’s full-time students would be referred to as Cadets. THE SPORTS NETWORK TOP 25

The organization of the school’s actual name - The Citadel - may be traced to the 1. North Dakota State (3-0) 2. Eastern Washington (2-1) building which originally housed all of the first Cadets. 3. Southeastern Louisiana (2-1) 4. Montana (2-1) Unlike most Citadel customs and traditions, which have developed over a period of 5. Coastal Carolina (3-0) time, the college’s colors were chosen in the interest of expediency. 6. McNeese State (1-1) 7. New Hampshire (1-1) In the spring of 1899, Cadet Captain John W. Moore, manager of the baseball team, 8. Villanova (1-1) secured permission to take the team on its first road trip. As other colleges had colors 9. Jacksonville State (1-1) which were displayed in athletic contests, Moore and a couple of friends decided that 10. South Dakota State (2-1) blue and white make an appropriate color combination, and they hastily had pennants 11. Northern Iowa (0-2) made in these colors to take on the road trip. 12. Bethune-Cookman (2-0) 13. William & Mary (2-1) 14. Montana State (2-1) The colors were readily accepted by the Corps of Cadets and have endured to this day. 15. Chattanooga (1-2) 16. Southern Illinois (3-0) 17. Richmond (2-1) WHY BULLDOGS? 18 Fordham (2-1) The Citadel qualifies as a school whose athletic teams are tagged with two nicknames - 19. Youngstown State (2-1) Cadets and Bulldogs. 20. Tennessee State (2-1) 21. Furman (2-1) 22. Northern Arizona (2-1) No one is quite sure when the school began accepting the Bulldogs as a nickname, but 23. Eastern Kentucky (3-0) Col. C.F. Myers, a former Citadel athlete and coach, offers a plausable explanation. 24. Liberty (2-1) 25. Sam Houston State (1-3) “When The Citadel started playing football we didn’t have really good teams, but the guys played hard and showed a lot of tenacity... like a Bulldog.” FCS COACHES TOP 25
