TOURNAMENT WRAP-UP 2009 Pepsi ICC EAP Men’s Cricket Trophy th th Apia, Samoa – 17 to 25 September 2009

The Papua New Guinea Barramundis took out the inaugural ICC EAP Twenty 20 competition w ith a resounding victory over the much improved Fiji Blues.

The Barramundis dominated the competition, going through undefeated, with several of their st ars performing well at crucial moments to ensure victory, in particular opening bowler Willie G avera, who grabbed 4 for 3 in Round 1 against Japan. The Fiji Blues also won their way through to the final with 3 consecutive wins against highly fa ncied opponents including Vanuatu and Samoa, Joji Bulabalavu scoring an impressive 90 in

R ound 1 and star opener Jo Baba scoring his maiden century in a regional tournament, against Indonesia in Round 3. PNG Captain Chris In the final between PNG and Fiji, PNG skipper Chris Amini won the toss and elected to bat. Amini accepts the Lomani and Baba took the new ball for the Blues and bowled superbly early, putting openers Man of the Match Assad Vala and Vani Vagi Morea under extreme pressure, with Baba collecting both of their Award in Round 1. via 2 screaming catches from Fiji’s Kida. With PNG under pressure as heavy favourites at 2 for 33, Chris Amini and newcomer Jeremiah Nigani came together and b egan to rebuild the innings. Both batsmen batted superbly as part of a 148 run stand, with Captain Amini accumulating 82 and left-hander Nigani s mashing 80, including 8 towering sixes, the Barramundis completing their 20 overs with a huge total of 6 for 208. The Blues were confident of scoring an upset, and with talent such as Baba, Dabea, Yabaki and Tupou there was c ertainly reason to be optimistic, even against a powerhouse fast bowling line-up including Gavera, Nou and Raho. Unfortunately for Fiji, they started terribly with Baba run-out in the very first over, and from there it was an uphill battle, w ith only Iniasi Cakacaka getting amongst the runs with a well-made 60. For PNG, Nou and Raho bowled superbly with g ood pace to share 5 wickets between them.

TOURNAMENT WRAP-UP

2009 Pepsi ICC EAP Men’s Cricket Trophy th th Apia, Samoa – 17 to 25 September 2009

With the potential to participate in Pepsi ICC World Cricket League up for grabs as winner of the Non-World Cricket League co mpetition, plenty was on the line for Vanuatu, Samoa, Cook Islands, Tonga and Indonesia. Vanuatu stamped their authority early with some outstanding performances, while injury was the main concern for Samoa. The Cook Isl ands began well however Tonga and Indonesia fell off the pace early despite competitive performances. Eventually Vanuatu went through to the final undefeated, while Samoa only dropped the one game, to Vanuatu, to set up an intriguing ba ttle. The Cook Islands and Tonga played off for 3rd and 4th while Indonesia finished 5th. sIns th e 1st v 2nd Playoff, Vanuatu won the toss and elected to bat on a warm day in Apia, Samoa. While Carlot was knocked over early by Samoan star Faasao, this brought together opener Damian Smith and Vanuatu Captain Andrew Mansale, fresh from a century the previous da y against Tonga. Smith and Mansale proceeded to build a superb partnership, and worked the ball to all parts of the ground, Mansale bringing up his 2nd co nsecutive century. Ably supported by Smith (43), Langa (33) and Dunn (46), Vanuatu reached a huge 6 for 300 from their 50 overs. In reply, Samoa struggled to keep up with the required run-rate, and with wickets falling regularly, fell well short of the 301 required, and were eventually dismissed for 175. Ben Mailata batted particularly well for Samoa, making a solid 43, with Murphy Su’a the next best with 21.
