Meet the Director, Dr. Timothy Diem SUMB Orange Peel | 2 Pride of the Orange, It is a pleasure to be wriCng to you today and introducing myself to you as the next director of the Syracuse University Marching Band. Let me start by congratulang you on one of the best decisions of your life so far, to aend SU and be a member of the SUMB! I think you will find that being a part of this ensemble greatly enhances your experience on campus. You will meet a diverse group of students who, like you, have decided to be a part of the tradiCon, pageantry and excellence of being a member of collegiate marching band. I am currently winding down my year serving as a middle school band director in Rockford, MN. Prior to this assignment, I had the pleasure to work with the University of Minnesota Marching Band for sixteen years, serving as the Director of AthleCc Bands for the final eleven of those years. I have had the opportunity to visit the Syracuse area a number of Cmes in the past and my sons and I are looking forward to joining you in upstate New York. More snow, but less cold. That seems like a fair trade to us! Planning for the coming season is in moCon as we look to provide a variety of music and shows that will entertain fans of all ages. I am always looking for input from students about music that they and their colleagues in the university would enjoy in the stands and on the field, so if you have ideas you want to share or some old favorites you want to be sure stay in that folder please feel free to drop me a line at [email protected]. I believe that marching band members are always the best ambassadors for the university. With the variety of backgrounds and majors, the enthusiasm for the school, your serving nature, and your penchant to perform makes you the face and sound of the university. For the veteran members, thank you for all you have done and plan to conCnue to do for SU and the SUMB. To my fellow rookies, get ready for one of the best rides of your life! The "Pride of the Orange" has evolved over the course of a century, but still march­ es onto the field during every SU home football game, members proud­ ly wearing form-fitting, epauletted white jackets and blue pants with an orange stripe down each side. With more than 200 members, the band perpetuates the best elements of its long history. The SUMB's role in University history is not lost on College of Visual and Performing Arts professor Bradley Ethington, who serves as assistant director of bands and director of the Pride of the Orange. He is commit­ ted to maintaining those qualities that made the band one of the most respected in the country. "To many people, especially alumni, the SUMB carries great tradition," he says.
