SEPTIMUS SMITH Esq The CORRESPONDENCE SERIES is an investigation into the background of recipients of British pre- stamped postal stationery. The "collection" was purchased in South Africa in 1999 as a job lot, the which took me six months to sort and mount, creating a collection spanning 140 years. I have no idea of the provenance. The Reference work is British Postal Stationery, A K Huggins.1970. The first date with catalogue number refers to the year when the pre-stamped envelope was first issued; the second, the year when the envelope was actually used. Philatelic Description of the item of Postal Stationery: 1841-1842 (EP5a)_Septimus Smith Esq., Solr, Blandford (actually used AU17 1847) Comment: Septimus Smith was an influential and respected solicitor at Blanford. His name appears on the List of Bailiffs: 1592 to 1834 against the year 1831. Septimus SMITH Esq. was baptized 29 October 1793 Axminster and died 14th August 1849 Blandford Forum, Dorset married Iwerne Courtney 15 January 1818 Sophia ANDREWS of Iwerne Courtney Blandford Forum Administration 15 November 1834. Apologies Cllr Mower. 2. Minutes of Previous The Minutes of the meeting held on 25 July 2018 having been previously circulated, were agreed; the presiding Meeting Chairman duly signed the minutes. Proposed by Cllr Milmer and Cllr Morris. 3. Declaration of Interests No interests were declared. 4. Matters Arising a. Memorial benches – Cllr Hewitt advised the council that the families of the late Mr Holly and Mrs P Curnow had approached the council to consider the installation of memorial benches. The council discussed the options for locations, including the Glebe and at the triangulation point on Hambledon Hill. Cllr Hewitt will discuss with Cllr Hewitt the families the idea of benches on the upper Glebe area along with alternative memorial options for Mr Holly’s families to consider. It is noted that the family of Mrs P Curnow have already purchased a bench, which will be installed and maintained by Mr T Stephens on behalf of her family should the proposed location be acceptable, whilst the Clerk has the cost purchase price of this bench should she be instructed to include such on the councils insurance schedule. Cllr Gibson Fleming advised the council that the Ranston Estate could not agree to a memorial bench being installed at this location and cited the potential for urbanisation, which would be against its responsibility to maintain the natural habitat and beauty of this iconic location.

Appendix 1 North Dorset District Council Local Development Framework Assessment of Settlements Based on Population and Community Facilities Supporting Document to the Core Strategy: Issues and Options Paper May 2007 1.0 Introduction Scope and Purpose of the Report 1.1 In light of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 and Planning Policy Statement 12: Local Development Frameworks, North Dorset District Council is undertaking evidence gathering work to assist in the preparation of its Local Development Framework (LDF), which will have regard to, and will contribute to, the achievement of sustainable development. 1.2 The main objective of this report is to identify and audit the current services and facilities presently found in all settlements within the District and the resident population of those settlements. This report will be used as part of the evidence base in the production of the Council’s Core Strategy. 1.3 This supporting document aims to generate options for the identification of sustainable settlements. These towns and villages will be the focus for future development and will be shown with a settlement boundary in the Council’s Core Strategy. 1.4 This report serves as only a part of the evidence base which will inform the production of the Council’s Core Strategy. Full stakeholder and community consultation will be undertaken, following the statutory requirements of the ‘new’ planning system, and the corporate objectives of the Council, in order that the final decisions made by the Council are fully informed by the views of the District’s communities. The council agreed to purchase new dog signs for ‘no fouling and ‘no dogs’’ on sites within the village. This is in line with the new NDDC Dog related Clerk for SL March 19 x Public Spaces Protection Order due on 31 March 2019. Clerk to organise new dog signs for village 4 items amenities. The numerous potholes in Bessells Lane have been regularly reported (council and residents) and remedial action is anticipated by DCC Highways. Clerk to advise via the parish website and Shroton Lines that the riding of horses on the green lane (track from Hellum Farmhouse, behind the General Wolfe Close homes to Fairfield Road) is not permissible as this is not a bridleway and is the land is privately owned.

Hammoon, sounds so strange to the English ear that one can be forgiven to thinking that it is a small village in the central provinces of India! As it happens, Hammoon Manor was originally gifted to Thomas de Mohun of Moyon in Normandy following his support of William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. Moyon being a bit of a mouthful for Dorset folk anglicised it over the centuries from the ‘Ham of Moyon’ to ‘Hammoon’. Perfect sense when you think about it. The Manor House as you see it today has changed little over the centuries except for the addition of a few farm buildings’ here and there. And has been described ‘as one of the most picturesque houses in Dorset’. Hammoon Manor Barn where you are staying formed part of the original manor farmyard. In 2019, we converted the barns to luxury holiday accommodation and created courtyard gardens where there had previously been hard standing. We were thrilled with the results – we hope you are! As you probably know you are in the heart of the Blackmore Vale and of course the heart of Thomas Hardy Country.
