Introduction: Romney’s Dilemma Mitt Romney woke up on the morning of September 11, 2012, with big hopes for this day – that he’d stop the slow slide of his campaign for the presidency. The political conventions were in his rear-view mirror, and the Republican nominee for the White House was trailing President Obama in most major polls. In an ABC News/Washington Post poll released at the start of the week, the former Massachusetts governor’s previous 1-point lead had flipped to a 6-point deficit.1 “Mr. Obama almost certainly had the more successful convention than Mr. Romney,” wrote Nate Silver, the polling guru and then-New York Times blogger.2 While the incumbent’s gathering in Charlotte was marked by party unity and rousing testimonials from Obama’s wife, Michelle, and former President Bill Clinton, Romney’s confab in Tampa had fallen flat.

More than 500 years ago, Thomas More published a slim book in Latin that bequeathed us the word "Utopia." He conjured up a fictional island where people enjoy "life in happiness and peace, with all cares removed." Three centuries later, philosopher John Stuart Mill questioned the practicality of achieving a Utopia -- popularizing the term "dystopia" in a speech to the House of Commons. As they presented their case this past week for ousting the President, Democrats summoned a dystopian vision of Donald Trump's America: a rampaging virus, record unemployment and democracy in danger. Over four nights, convention speakers, including Barack and Michelle Obama, Kamala Harris, Bernie Sanders and Jill Biden, invoked decency, empathy, democracy, diversity and unity to rally voters behind Joe Biden.

  • White Privilege: What It Is, What It Is Not, and How It Shapes American Discussions of Policing and Historical Iconography
WHITE PRIVILEGE: WHAT IT IS, WHAT IT IS NOT, AND HOW IT SHAPES AMERICAN DISCUSSIONS OF POLICING AND HISTORICAL ICONOGRAPHY Neil H. Buchanan* Abstract What is White privilege? In this Essay, I explore the privileges that White men take for granted in dealing with the police, even as I acknowledge that the most privileged Americans are still potentially subject to arbitrary and unaccountable police abuses. I also examine the debate over changing the names of places in the United States, as well as taking down the statues of the people who have long been treated as heroes, including the founding generation. The common thread between these two topics is that privilege allows White people not even to notice when they receive favorable treatment. They do not feel privileged when dealing with the police, because their baseline assumption is that they will not be targeted because of their race. They do not feel privileged when thinking about the heroes of American history, because history has always been written largely as the story of White men; so if anyone else tries to think about history in a different way, the proposed changes challenge White people‘s long-held presumptions. It is those very presumptions that are the evidence of privilege. INTRODUCTION ..................................................................................... 100 I. When I graduated from seminary and began serving as the curate in my first Quick Links parish, a wise, old, semi-retired priest GIVE to Grace who was on the staff noted that I had a Make Your 2016 PLEDGE new car. His advice to me was that as a priest of the church I should never Visit our Website tarnish the bumper of my car with More About Us partisan political stickers. "You will never change anyone's Did You Miss a Sermon? mind on that front, and only alienate parishioners who happen to disagree with you," is essentially what he said. At the time my new bumper was entirely clear of stickers, and I had no plans to festoon it with a single one. Nevertheless, I've always tried to abide by the spirit of the HOW WE GOT old priest's advice. People of faith can be found on all points of the political spectrum, and we already have HERE... enough people - too many, in fact - who suspect that God's politics and their own are one and the same. Regardless of your political leanings, my guess is you would agree that the 2016 presidential campaign thus far has not been an altogether pleasant experience. As a nation we seem to be in a time of widening polarization.
