Head Coach Shannon Hlebichuk

After completing her third year as head coach, Shannon (LeBlanc) Hlebichuk has instituted and maintained the same fervor and drive into the UMass Lowell field hockey program which made her a two-time All-American during her undergraduate days. Awards have been plenty in Hlebichuk's three seasons, for her and her players. She was named the 2003 Division II Coach of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) and was named the Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2004. She has also guided 15 players to all-conference honors and eight players – incuding five in 2004 – to All-American status. In the fall of 2004, Hlebichuk guided UML to its most successful season numerically in school history (19-3) and spearheaded the River Hawks to their second straight Northeast- 10 Conference Tournament title as well as an encore trip to the NCAA Tournament. Along the way, UML shattered several school records, most notably wins in a season (19) and consecutive victories – the River Hawks opened the season 15-0 and spent all but three weeks ranked No. 1 in the NFHCA Division II poll. The 2004 season followed a very special 2003 campaign in which Hlebichuk guided UML (15-7, 12-4 in the NE-10) to their first conference tournament title and the NCAA Tournament championship match, where it fell to 11-time champion Bloomsburg, 4-1. The River Hawks peaked at the right time, defeating Bentley (3-2 on strokes) and Bryant for the conference tournament title, which secured UML as the host site of the NCAATournament. On the eve of the 2003 NE-10 Tournament championship, Hlebichuk became the third field hockey player inducted into the University's Athletic Hall of Fame. In 2002, Hlebichuk guided the River Hawks to a 9-9 overall record and a 6-4 clip in the NE-10 (sixth), as well as the team's first postseason appearance in 20 years. Outside of coaching, Hlebichuk serves on the NCAA Division II Field Hockey Committee as the Northeast Region representative. She also on the NFHCA North-South All-Star Game Committee (she was named head coach of the North Region squad in 2004) and the NFHCA Division II All-American Committee. Over the span of her career (1994-98), Hlebichuk amassed 33 goals and a UML career record 29 assists, pitting her second on UML's all- time scoring list. As a senior, she compiled 13 goals and 19 assists (45 points) to establish school records for assists and points in a single season. She was an integral player in helping the River Hawks to a 15- 4 record in 1997, up from a 5-15 clip the year prior. A two-year captain, Hlebichuk was twice named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division II All-America team and was named the 1997-98 NCAA Woman of the Year for the state of . IT'S A PRIVILIGE TO BE RIVER HAWK Hlebichuk’s field hockey prowess carried over to the classroom as she earned a spot on the NFHCA National Academic Squad three times. She was also named a GTE Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and was co-chair of UML’s Student-Athlete Advi- sory Council. Upon graduation in 1998, Hlebichuk earned her master’s degree in higher education at Arizona State University. Hlebichuk and her husband Korey reside in Nashua, NH, with their daughter Liv Marie (2).
