NORTH SEA] BASIC SYSTEM ' • HIS is the only Basic System whose watershed does not penetrate beyond the Alps, so it is immaterial whether it be traced·from W. to E. as [Adriatic .w. North Sea], or from E. toW. as [North Sea . w. Adriatic]. The Basic Watershed, which also answers to the title [Po ~ w. Rhine], is short arid for purposes of practical convenience scarcely requires subdivision, but the distinction between the Aar basin (actually Reuss, and Limmat) and that of the Rhine itself, is of too great significance to be overlooked, to say nothing of the magnitude and importance of the Major Branch System involved. This gives two Basic Sections of very unequal dimensions, but the ., Alps being of natural origin cannot be expected to fall into more or less equal com partments. Two rather less unbalanced sections could be obtained by differentiating Ticino.- and Adda-drainage on the Po-side, but this would exhibit both hydrographic and Alpine inferiority. (1) BASIC SECTION SYSTEM (Po .W. AAR]. This System happens to be synonymous with (Po .w. Reuss] and with [Ticino .w. Reuss]. · The Watershed From .Wyttenwasserstock (E) the Basic Watershed runs generally E.N.E. to the Hiihnerstock, Passo Cavanna, Pizzo Luceridro, St. Gotthard Pass, and Pizzo Centrale; thence S.E. to the Giubing and Unteralp Pass, and finally E.N.E., to end in the otherwise not very notable Piz Alv .1 Offshoot in the Po ( Ticino) basin A spur runs W.S.W. -

Glacier‐related debris flows are, in part, a consequence of general glacier retreat and the corresponding exposure of large quantities of unconsolidated, unvegetated, and sometimes ice‐cored glacial sediments. This paper documents glacier‐related debris flows at 17 sites in the Italian, French, and Swiss Alps, with a focus on the Italian northwest sector. For each case data are provided which describe the glacier and the instability. Three types of events have been recognized, based on antecedent meteorological conditions. Type 1 (9 documented debris flows) is triggered by intense and prolonged rainfall, causing water saturation of sediments and consequent failure of large sediment volumes (up to 800000 m3). Type 2 (2 debris flows) is triggered by short rainstorms which may destabilize the glacier drainage system, with debris flow volumes up to 100000 m3. Type 3 (6 debris flows) occurs during dry weather by glacial lake outbursts or ground/buried ice melting, with debris flow volumes up to 150000 m3. -

Frozen Ground Th e News Bulletin of the International Permafrost Association Number 32, December 2008 INTERNATIONAL PERMAFROST ASSOCIATION Th e International Permafrost Association, founded in 1983, has as its objectives to foster the dissemination of knowledge concerning permafrost and to promote cooperation among persons and national or international organisations engaged in scientifi c investigation and engineering work on permafrost. Membership is through national Adhering Bodies and Associate Members. Th e IPA is governed by its offi cers and a Council consisting of representatives from 26 Adhering Bodies having interests in some aspect of theoretical, basic and applied frozen ground research, including permafrost, seasonal frost, artifi cial freezing and periglacial phenomena. Committees, Working Groups, and Task Forces organise and coordinate research activities and special projects. Th e IPA became an Affi liated Organisation of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) in July 1989. Beginning in 1995 the IPA and the International Geographical Union (IGU) developed an Agreement of Cooperation, thus making IPA an affi liate of the IGU. Th e Association’s primary responsibilities are convening International Permafrost Conferences, undertaking special projects such as preparing databases, maps, bibliographies, and glossaries, and coordinating international fi eld programmes and networks. Conferences were held in West Lafayette, Indiana, U.S.A., 1963; in Yakutsk, Siberia, 1973; in Edmonton, Canada, 1978; in Fairbanks, Alaska, 1983; in Trondheim, Norway, 1988; in Beijing, China, 1993; in Yellowknife, Canada, 1998, in Zurich, Switzerland, 2003, and in Fairbanks, Alaska, in 2008. Location and arrival Marking the boundary between the regions of Lom- bardy and Trentino, the Passo del Tonale is a natural amphitheatre linking the Val di Sole with the Valca- monica, a sunny, panoramic spot that climbs from 1884 metres above sea level up to 3100 metres, between the Ortler Alps and the Adamello-Presanella range. It offers over 100 km of downhill pistes and some 50 km of cross-country trails. The main airport used to get to Passo del Tonale is Bergamo Orio al Serio. The best way to arrive to Passo del Tonale from the Orio al Serio Airport is by bus Ori- Schedule Credits oshuttle. The river changed course in July 2009. Until then the river flowed directly to the south from the outlet on the eastern side of the terminus and under the longest bridge in Iceland, the ~900 m long Skeiðará bridge. It was to Keio that I got myself transferred when I could no longer stand the prison-like atmosphere of my first university. Keio, which was founded earlier than any of the government institutions, is the oldest university in Japan, and in my opinion the finest in the country. Its founder was a man of extremely liberal views, and it used to be known as “The English University”, because most of the instruction there was formerly given in that language. GLAMORGAN RECORD OFFICE/ARCHIFDY MORGANNWG Reference code : GB 214 D19 Title : RECORDS OF THE BRUCE FAMILY OF MONKNASH Dates of creation : 1728-1972 Level of description: Fonds Extent : 11 boxes, 1 outsize vol., 6 plans; 0.36m2 Administrative/Biographical history John Bruce Knight of Dyffryn, Aberdare (afterwards John Bruce Pryce) inherited the Monknash estate in 1837 under the will of his distant cousin Mrs Booth Grey of Dyffryn, St Nicholas. By the early twentieth century, the estate consisted of over 1,400 acres in the parishes of Monknash, Marcross and Llandow and also a Western or Neath estate in Cadoxton-juxta-Neath, Michaelston Higher, Pontrhydyfen and Rhos Pontardawe, which included mineral rights The main family house was Blaen- y-cwm in Monknash. The records were accumulated by the estate and by individual members of the Bruce Pryce and Bruce families particularly George Lewis Bruce (1862-1955). Custodial history D19/1/1-43 were formerly held in The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth, and transferred by the family with D19/1/1-2 to the Glamorgan Record Office in 1967. The remaining records were deposited in 1982. Content of collection The papers include estate deeds 1728-early 20th century (formerly held in The National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth) relating to Monknash, Dyffryn St Nicholas, Cadoxton-juxta-Neath and Cilybebyll, estate rentals 1904-46, estate plans and correspondence together with plans of the house of George Lewis Bruce in Loughton, Essex, 1903-12; estate papers of Alan George Cameron Bruce Pryce (1874-1929), Alan Louisa Catherine Cameron (d. 1917). The collection includes family wills and settlements 1790-1936, family photographs, and miltary photographs of Brigadier General Thomas Bruce Pryce, DSO, papers of the Wick District Nursing Association 1910-16, Monknash parish meeting minutes, and a large body of records compiled by George Lewis Bruce (1862-1955) who lived at Loughton, Essex, 1904-c.1937, later Monknash. -

Hopkins (1844 - 1889) Nomination of the Dolomites for inscription on the World Natural Heritage List UNESCO THE TENTATIVE LIST AND THE NOMINATION OF THE DOLOMITES This Nomination Document is the answer to the Decision to defer the previous nomination of the Dolomites (2005) expressed by the World Heritage Commit- tee during the Thirty-first Session Christchurch, New Zealand (23 June – 2 July 2007). In detail, the World Heritage Committee having examined Documents WHC-07/31. COM/8B and WHC-07/31.COM/INF.8B.2, defers the examination of the nomina- tion of The Dolomites, Italy, to the World Heritage List on the basis of criteria (vii) and (viii). As outlined in the document licensed by the Word Heritage Committee at the end of the 29th session held in Durban, South Africa, in July 2005, Italy has proposed the Dolomites as one of the sites deserving consideration for a possible future nomination as a site of outstanding universal value. The request was included in annex 1 of the Tentative List dated march 31st 2005, whereas the denomination ‘Dolomites’ is defined in annex 2 “Tentative List Sub- mission in accordance with decision 27 Com 8a” and annex 3 (Properties ac- cepted as meeting the requirements for Tentative List), within the scope of the broader denomination ‘Alps’, which also includes a) Western Alps and c) Eastern Alps, under the category ‘Natural Sites’.
