Rat Pack Who Was in the Rat Pack? Rat Pack Who was in the Rat Pack? There were five members of the Rat Pack: Peter Lawford, James Dean, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Joey Bishop Peter Lawford James Dean Frank Sinatra Sammy Davis Jr. Joey Bishop How’d it start? ● The group originated in 1955 as a group of friends who met in Los Angeles while at a friends home; Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall ● The name “Rat Pack” originated when Bacall walked in on the group of men and told them that they looked like a rat pack Humphrey Bogart & Lauren Bacall History ● The group consisted of actors, comedians, and singers ● The Rat Pack was a supergroup of entertainment and comedy who often appeared together in concerts, on TV or in movies. They sang, they told jokes, they did comedy sketches ● Sinatra, Davis, and Martin, the singing contingent of the group, all managed long individual careers in the recording industry, and would occasionally band together to do nightclub concerts, frequently in Las Vegas, that were equal parts comedy and music, and heavy on caricature, playing off of the groups huge public personas History ● Although the group didn’t always perform together, when one member of the Pack was scheduled for a live show, there was always a chance that one or two others might join them onstage. The marquee at The Sands Hotel would often read, “DEAN MARTIN—MAYBE FRANK—MAYBE SAMMY.” ● Rat Pack shows were popular not just for the quality of the entertainment, but also for the glimpse into showbiz's most exclusive fraternity. The Rat Pack had their own drinks tray, rolled out on stage during performances. They told stories, and made spontaneous jokes at each other's expense Joey Bishop: The Comedian ● Bishop’s path toward the Rat Pack began in the 1950s when he struck up a friendship with Frank Sinatra. He was becoming one of America’s most beloved comedians of the era. Bishop was not as flashy as other members of the group and tended to remain in the background, becoming the crew member who coordinated most of the Rat Pack’s routines. Peter Lawford: The Socialite ● British actor Peter Lawford had made a name for himself before he ever joined up as a member of the Rat Pack. He became John F. Kennedy’s brother-in-law when he married the President’s sister, Patricia Kennedy ● As an actor, Lawford had the privilege of being the first to kiss Elizabeth Taylor on camera. He was also the last person to speak to Marilyn Monroe before her mysterious and untimely death Peter Lawford Songs ● “The Best Things in Life Are Free’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7FsxH3LGR0 ● “He’s a Ladies Man” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3tDme2NALqo Sammy Davis Jr.: Mr. Show Business ● Sammy Davis, Jr. became one of the most well-known entertainers, singers, and dancers during his time with the Rat Pack, and beyond. Reviews Keith Loria, on theatermania.com, called the show “a tender glimpse into the Hineses’ rise to fame and a touching tribute to a brother.” Benjamin Tomchik wrote in Broadway World, that the show “seems determined not only to love the audience, but to entertain them, and it succeeds at doing just that! While Tappin' Thru Life does have some flaws, it's hard to find anyone who isn't won over by Hines showmanship, humor, timing and above all else, talent.” In The Washington Post, Nelson Pressley wrote, “’Tappin’ is basically a breezy, personable concert. The show doesn’t flinch from hard-core nostalgia; the heart-on-his-sleeve Hines is too sentimental for that. It’s frankly schmaltzy, and it’s barely written — it zips through selected moments of Hines’s life, creating a mood more than telling a story. it’s a pleasure to be in the company of a shameless, ebullient vaudeville heart.” Maurice Hines Is .

  • Sammy Davis Jr
Famous New Yorker Sammy Davis Jr. Sammy Davis Jr. struggled with racism for much of his career, but his success as a performer and celebrity helped Americans envision racial equality in the world of entertainment. Samuel George Davis Jr. was born in Harlem, New York City, on December 8, 1925. Sammy Davis Sr. was a dancer in a touring troupe led by Will Mastin. When his marriage broke up, Davis took Sammy Jr. on the road with the Mastin troupe. Junior was a precocious mimic of his father’s and Mastin’s dance moves and became their partner in the Will Mastin Trio. To dodge child labor laws, Mastin sometimes claimed that Junior was an adult midget. In 1933, Mastin and Davis took the seven year old to a Brooklyn movie studio to make his fi lm debut in the short subject Rufus Jones for President. Davis Sr. tried to shield his son as much as possible Sammy Davis Jr. with President from the bigotry of his time. Sammy Davis Jr. later Richard Nixon. • Frank's World
Chris Rojek / Frank Sinatra Final Proof 9.7.2004 10:22pm page 7 one FRANK’S WORLD Frank Sinatra was a World War One baby, born in 1915.1 He became a popular music phenomenon during the Second World War. By his own account, audiences adopted and idol- ized him then not merely as an innovative and accomplished vocalist – his first popular sobriquet was ‘‘the Voice’’ – but also as an appealing symbolic surrogate for American troops fighting abroad. In the late 1940s his career suffered a precipitous de- cline. There were four reasons for this. First, the public perception of Sinatra as a family man devoted to his wife, Nancy, and their children, Nancy, Frank Jr and Tina, was tarnished by his high-octane affair with the film star Ava Gardner. The public face of callow charm and steadfast moral virtue that Sinatra and his publicist George Evans concocted during his elevation to celebrity was damaged by his admitted adultery. Sinatra’s reputation for possessing a violent temper – he punched the gossip columnist Lee Mortimer at Ciro’s night- club2 and took to throwing tantrums and hurling abuse at other reporters when the line of questioning took a turn he disap- proved of – became a public issue at this time. Second, servicemen were understandably resentful of Sina- tra’s celebrity status. They regarded it as having been easily achieved while they fought, and their comrades died, overseas. Some members of the media stirred the pot by insinuating that Sinatra pulled strings to avoid the draft. During the war, like most entertainers, Sinatra made a virtue of his patriotism in his stage act and music/film output.

  • {PDF EPUB} the Peter Lawford Story Life with the Kennedys Monroe and the Rat Pack by Patricia Lawford Stewart the Tragic History of the Rat Pack
Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} The Peter Lawford Story Life with the Kennedys Monroe and the Rat Pack by Patricia Lawford Stewart The Tragic History Of The Rat Pack. The Rat Pack is the epitome of Mad Men- style old-school cool. As Colin Bertram of Biography tells us, the legendary group of entertainers were originally acquaintances who used to hang around at Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall's home in Los Angeles. Before their most famous line- up, they had a Who's Who list of satellite members that included David Niven, Spencer Tracy, and Robert Mitchum. They were by no means a "men only" club, either: Early on, legendary ladies such as Ava Gardner, Judy Garland, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn counted themselves in the group's ranks. In fact, the Rat Pack didn't even really want to be one. They actually liked to be called "The Summit" or "The Clan." Still, regardless of their full list of members or original naming aspirations, history has come to know the group as the Rat Pack, and Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., Dean Martin, Peter Lawford, and Joey Bishop are considered its core members. As effortlessly awesome as the group appeared to be, there was actually a lot of turmoil and sadness behind the scenes. Today, we'll take a look at the tragic history of the Rat Pack. Peter Lawford's right hand. If you're hard-pressed to name an iconic Peter Lawford movie, you probably won't be alone. Though his IMDb page shows that his acting career was lengthy and impressive, his entry on the Hollywood Walk of Fame website tells us that Lawford also had a couple of other things playing in his favor.
