Internal Correspondence Our ref: Your ref: To: PRSG – T. Wilkes Date: From: Terrestrial Ecosystems Unit – J. Marshall Subject: Te Kuha Coal Mine Summary • The applicant has provided appropriate and adequate information to assess the vegetation and flora values of the proposed industrial footprint, the impact of the proposal on those values and potential mitigation and compensation actions • The vegetation and flora values within the Westport Water Conservation Reserve, the Ballarat and Mount Rochfort Conservation Areas and the Lower Buller Gorge Scenic Reserve are clearly significant, particularly the degree of intactness but also the degree of connectivity to other large and relatively unmodified areas of high ecological value, and because of the presence of several “Naturally Uncommon Ecosystems”, two Nationally Threatened plant species, one and potentially two or three plant species in decline – at risk of extinction, and six species with scientifically interesting distributions. • The site is an ecologically important part of the Ecological District and Region. The elevated Brunner coal measures ecosystems are nationally unique: Te Kuha and Mt William are distinguished from all other parts of the elevated Brunner coal measures as they are the only discrete parts of the system that are essentially intact with no significant disruption to ecological patterns and processes and they represent the best example of coastal hillslope forest remaining on elevated Brunner coal measures. • The impacts, both in short and long time frames on significant biodiversity values of an opencast coal mine and associated infrastructure, are significant; the remedial effects of active restoration and site rehabilitation will be limited. • The suggested mitigation actions include avoidance measures, remedial actions and some mitigation and/or compensation suggestions.

  • The 1934 Pahiatua Earthquake Sequence: Analysis of Observational and Instrumental Data
221 THE 1934 PAHIATUA EARTHQUAKE SEQUENCE: ANALYSIS OF OBSERVATIONAL AND INSTRUMENTAL DATA Gaye Downes1' 2, David Dowrick1' 4, Euan Smith3' 4 and Kelvin Berryman1' 2 ABSTRACT Descriptive accounts and analysis of local seismograms establish that the epicentre of the 1934 March 5 M,7.6 earthquake, known as the Pahiatua earthquake, was nearer to Pongaroa than to Pahiatua. Conspicuous and severe damage (MM8) in the business centre of Pahiatua in the northern Wairarapa led early seismologists to name the earthquake after the town, but it has now been found that the highest intensities (MM9) occurred about 40 km to the east and southeast of Pahiatua, between Pongaroa and Bideford. Uncertainties in the location of the epicentre that have existed for sixty years are now resolved with the epicentre determined in this study lying midway between those calculated in the 1930' s by Hayes and Bullen. Damage and intensity summaries and a new isoseismal map, derived from extensive newspaper reports and from 1934 Dominion Observatory "felt reports", replace previous descriptions and isoseismal maps. A stable solution for the epicentre of the mainshock has been obtained by analysing phase arrivals read from surviving seismograms of the rather small and poorly equipped 1934 New Zealand network of twelve stations (two privately owned). The addition of some teleseismic P arrivals to this solution shifts the location of the epicentre by less than 10 km. It lies within, and to the northern end of, the MM9 isoseismal zone. Using local instrumental data larger aftershocks and other moderate magnitude earthquakes that occurred within 10 days and 50 km of the mainshock have also been located.

The sites are all prominent headlands – Katiki (Moeraki peninsula), Matakaea (Shag Point) and Huriawa (Karitane Peninsula) – strategic strongholds occupied by Maori for hundreds of years. Archaeological evidence of occupation dates back to the 12th Century. Since the Käi Claims Settlement Act of 1998, all three sites are managed in partnership between the Department of Conservation and Te Runanga o Käi Tahu. The Crown also formally recognised Matakaea’s special cultural, spiritual and historic significance of matakaea for Käi Tahu, by designating it as a topuni. In the southern Kai Tahu dialect, The concept derives from the Käi Tahu tikanga (custom) of rangatira (chiefs) ‘ng’ is often replaced by ‘k’.

Omarama Gazette November 2019 And we think they're awesome too! Omarama’s Police and Land Search and Rescue volunteers have been commended and thanked for their rescue of eight students caught out by weather conditions while tramping in the Huxley last month. Last week, in an article in the Police magazine ‘Ten One’, Southern District Inspector James Ure said the operation reflected" the great work some rural offic- ers undertook regularly" and, in this case, “with two Sar jobs happening simultaneously at opposite ends of the area”. He acknowledged the team’s “quality decision making and excellent work”. “There was a very high chance of serious risk or death occurring." He thanked all the volunteers "who put themselves in harm’s way that night". “The support ...provided to RCCNZ [ Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand] in coordinating this operation proved the value of local expertise and having a good volunteer group available.” About 11.30pm, Friday, October 18, barely two hours after returning home from searching for a man missing in the Waitaki River, near Duntroon, Senior Constable Nayland (Bean) Smith and the Omarama LandSar team were alerted that help was needed to find trampers in Huxley Forks -Hopkins Valley area. Eight students aged 20 to 25 had activated a personal locator beacon near the Blair Glacier above the Huxley River. Weather conditions had deteriorated, it was snowing, two in the group were show- ing signs of hypothermia, so the group found shelter, pitched tents and because of their circumstances, activated the personal locator beacon. LandSar commended continued... Bean called Tom Moore of Lake Ohau Station who told him there was about an inch of snow on the ground, low -lying cloud and light rain but the river should be fordable with a 4WD.
