Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs What is a compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) bulb? A CFL bulb is a type of fluorescent bulb that screws into a standard light socket, such as a lamp or ceiling light fixture. Abstract This paper addresses the debate over compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and incandescents through life-cycle analyses (LCA) conducted in the SimaPro1 life-cycle analysis program. It compares the environmental impacts of providing a given amount of light (approximately 1,600 lumens) from incandescents and CFLs for 10,000 hours. Special attention has been paid to recently raised concerns regarding CFLs—specifically that their complex manufacturing process uses so much energy that it outweighs the benefits of using CFLs, that turning CFLs on and off frequently eliminates their energy-efficiency benefits, and that they contain a large amount of mercury. The research shows that the efficiency benefits compensate for the added complexity in manufacturing, that while rapid on-off cycling of the lamp does reduce the environmental (and payback) benefits of CFLs they remain a net “win,” and that the mercury emitted over a CFL’s life—by power plants to power the CFL and by leakage on disposal—is still less than the mercury that can be attributed to powering the incandescent. PHYS 1400: Physical Science Laboratory Manual ILLUMINATION AND DISTANCE INTRODUCTION How bright is that light? You know, from experience, that a 100W light bulb is brighter than a 60W bulb. The wattage measures the energy used by the bulb, which depends on the bulb, not on where the person observing it is located. But you also know that how bright the light looks does depend on how far away it is. That 100W bulb is still emitting the same amount of energy every second, but if you are farther away from it, the energy is spread out over a greater area. You receive less energy, and perceive the light as less bright. But because the light energy is spread out over an area, it’s not a linear relationship. When you double the distance, the energy is spread out over four times as much area. If you triple the distance, the area is nine Twice the distance, ¼ as bright. Triple the distance? 11% as bright. times as great, meaning that you receive only 1/9 (or 11%) as much energy from the light source. To quantify the amount of light, we will use units called lux. The idea is simple: energy emitted per second (Watts), spread out over an area (square meters). However, a lux is not a W/m2! A lux is a lumen per m2. So, what is a lumen? Technically, it’s one candela emitted uniformly across a solid angle of 1 steradian. That’s not helping, is it? Examine the figure above. The source emits light (energy) in all directions simultaneously. -

TIP SHEET – LUMEN METER What is a lumen meter? A light meter or lumen meter is a device used to measure the amount of light in a certain area. Lumen meters have many uses such as photography and cinematography, however for our purpose we want to help reduce the amount of wasted light which equals wasted electricity. If conducting an outdoor lighting audit the purpose of a lumen meter would be to reduce the amount of light pollution. Light output is typically measured in luxes or lumens. Sometimes you will hear the word footcandles. This is another standard unit of measure that is used interchangeablely with the term lumen. As a case study, the life cycle assessment (LCA) associated with the raw materials, air, water and natural resources of screw-based compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and screw-based horticultural LED lamps (abbreviated as H-LED) used for “night break” effect in chrysanthemum cultivation is considered. Instead of the unit of radiant power of lighting sources (lumens) used in human lighting, the photon flux (micromoles per second) of the plant light is used in this study. The results of the study show that the environmental impacts of the H-LED lighting technology are markedly less than the fluorescent lamps. -
Delamping in Most of Our Classroom Light Fixtures, There Are One to Four Individual Fluorescent Lamps
Delamping In most of our classroom light fixtures, there are one to four individual fluorescent lamps. Depending on the types of fixtures, you can remove one of the lamps while keeping the others in. Which one to take out simply depends on which appears best to you. On the newer, skinnier (T-8) lamps, the manufacturer recommends that no more than one lamp be removed from the fixture. Delamping is a simple way to reduce foot-candles of light intensity in an area. In the lighting industry, foot-candles are a common unit of measurement used to calculate adequate lighting levels of workspaces in buildings or outdoor spaces. Of course, you can also remove all the lamps in a fixture if the light is not needed at all. Some overhead light fixtures are also emergency lights that will stay on when the building loses power. The emergency light fixtures should not be deplamped. Delamping should done by qualified staff only. Keep in mind these rules for delamping: Do not compromise health, safety, or security. Do not take lamps out of new fixtures that are still covered under warranty. Do consider the needs of the building occupants. With T-8 systems, do not remove more than one lamp per fixture. Maintain recommended minimum light levels. Refer to the chart on the next page. Where would you delamp a light fixture? Delamping is possible anywhere there is a fluorescent light fixture above an area that is not being used for active reading and writing or in areas where there is more light than needed. -
