This year, the City of Markham celebrates its historic 225th anniversary and as Canada’s most diverse community, we are proud of the rich heritage and traditions each culture brings, strengthening and enhancing the multicultural fabric of our society. We believe in fostering and promoting artistic expression. The Arts have the power to unite and inspire us; while these shared experiences bring us closer as a community. I would like to extend my appreciation to everyone attending the gala tonight in support of The Varley Art Gallery’s art acquisitions, conservation of art collections, educational programming, exhibition research and volunteer programs. The Varley Art Gallery is a preeminent cultural destination. It has grown exponentially over it’s more than 20 year history, hosting high profile and critically acclaimed exhibitions, and has attracted audiences from all over the Greater Toronto Area and beyond. A visit to the gallery is a chance to explore beautiful moments and powerful creations. Art fascinates us; it captures our imaginations and presents different perspectives to the world around us, while reflecting the ever-changing landscape of our diverse community. Thank you to the organizers, dedicated volunteers, sponsors, donors and community ambassadors who passionately believe in the benefits of making art more accessible to all. Wishing you an enchanting and enjoyable evening. Sincerely, Frank Scarpitti Mayor, City of Markham Louis Li Photography MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR, VARLEY-MCKAY ART FOUNDATION OF MARKHAM Welcome to our third annual Rouge: Varley Gala! Our goal tonight is to raise $125,000 which will benefit the Foundation and assist in supporting the Varley Art Gallery. By bidding on the items in our live and silent auctions, buying a bottle of wine (or more!) from the Wine Pull, and picking up some gift certificates at the Restaurant Grab & Go, you are making a huge difference in helping us reach our goal. The Varley-McKay Art Foundation of Markham is an advisory board to the Varley Art Gallery but its most important contribution is in providing funds to the gallery to assist with its exhibition and art acquisitions, the conservation of their art collection, and public and educational program support. In 2019, we hired two animateurs who provided engaging tours to visitors at the Varley and assisted the gallery’s Education Coordinator. We also hired a Summer Camp and Community Events Volunteer Supervisor who was a tremendous asset to the gallery’s program team as she coordinated the many volunteers involved in their camp and outreach programs. We would not be able to fund these positions without the revenues raised through our fundraising efforts, particularly this gala. We thank our guests, donors and sponsors for their generous and unwavering support. Enjoy the gala! Terrence Pochmurski Chair, Varley-McKay Art Foundation of Markham MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR, VARLEY ART GALLERY OF MARKHAM In 2019 the City of Markham celebrates its 225th anniversary. Established in 1794, the person considered to be Markham’s founder is William Moll Berczy, a writer, adventurer and settler, but also an architect and very significant portrait painter. It is important to remember that culture has been a central component of life in Markham since its earliest days. As the Varley Art Gallery celebrates its 22nd anniversary, we continue to act as a vital cultural hub for the region and play an essential role in community building. Through exhibitions and programs we bring together people of disparate language, heritage and ethnicity to participate in dialogue and to shape conversations about who we are as a community and where we want to go. At the individual level, participation in the arts is highly beneficial for virtually everyone. It assists in the acculturation of new Canadians, helps keep the elderly connected and engaged, encourages self-confidence in young people, improving their academic success and increasing awareness and critical thinking. By joining us today at Rouge: Varley Gala you display your support not just for the Varley Art Gallery, but for the Markham community as a whole. I invite you to visit us at the Varley Art Gallery to see in person the many ways in which we support the public good. THE DOUBTS THE DOUBTS are a group of experienced musicians who know how to get people out of their seats and onto the dance floor. And they can do it by covering just about any style of music, from hard-driving 70s classic rock favourites by the likes of Aerosmith and ZZ Top, to up-to-the-moment Top 40 hits by Adele, Rihanna, Bruno Mars and lots more. The finishing touch that puts THE DOUBTS over the top is vocals - and plenty of them. Tag-team lead singers Erin Benoit, Eric Lam and Neil Teixeira nail any genre by any artist, male or female. And there are often three or four-part harmonies filling out the mix. Women in the audience jump to their feet and everyone goes home sweaty and smiling. THE DOUBTS are available for nightclubs, corporate events and any other venue where anyone wants to shake it real good. 08 LIVE AUCTION RULES & INFO INFORMATION FOR GUESTS AND PROSPECTIVE PURCHASERS Bidding is by paddle number only and required ONLY for the Live Auction.
