The purpose of this research is to adapt the approaches used by prominent and influential writers and artists in the American superhero/action comic-book field to create an engaging Australian hero comic book. Further, the aim of this thesis is to bridge the gap between the lack of academic writing on the professional practice of the Australian comic industry. In order to achieve this, I explored and learned the methods these prominent and professional US writers and artists use. Compared to the American industry, the creating of comic books in Australia has rarely been documented, particularly in a formal capacity or from a contemporary perspective. The process I used was to navigate through the research and studio practice from the perspective of a solo artist with an interest to learn, and to develop into an artist with a firmer understanding of not only the medium being engaged, but the context in which the medium is being created.

You can find more of his work athttp://greencoat7.tumblr.com/ Vol: 1 No: 1 Fall 2013 Hello, and welcome to Breaking It All Down: The Zine! This is meant as something of a companion volume to my web-series “Breaking It All Down”, as occasionally viewed on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/CountZeroOr. Part of the point of the show was to discuss science fiction books and movies, as well as discussing video games from a literary SF perspective. Over time, I realized that while I had a certain degree of engagement with younger audiences, older SF fans generally prefer to take in discussion of SF in writing, rather in videos, with a few exceptions. In particular, Harlan Ellison has started up his own YouTube channel, which thus far he’s been using to upload some of the older video clips he did for The Science Fiction Channel (back before it contracted a case of Syfy). Consequently, if I wanted to get in a dialog with older fans who might be interested in my views on SF, it would have to be in writing. However, in this day and age of blogs, combined with the fact that I’m already writing for a web page – Bureau42.com, I would, theoreti- cally, have that covered, I thought.

  • Breaking It All Down, Issue 2
Vol. 1, No. 3. June 2014. About the Artist Jose Sanchez was born and raised in Miami, Florida on March 10,1968,where he still lives today with his wife Aliana. At the age of six, he was introduced to fingerpainting. By first grade, he had picked up his first pencil, but it was not until the summer of 1977 when Star Wars hit the movie screens across America, that his imaginative spark was truly ignited! Like so many other people that were influenced by the cult phenomenon, he was too. So much so, that this led him to seriously explore and develop his talent for creating art further. As time has gone by and he has honed his skills, he has been notably influenced by the works of Science Fiction and Fantasy artists such as: Stephen Youll, Donato Giancola, Chris Moore, Tim White, Jim Burns, David B. Mattingly and Michael Whelan, to name but a few. He attended Lindsey-Hopkins Technical Education Education Center in Miami, Florida where he received a certificate in Commercial Art Technology-majoring in illustration and minoring in Graphic Design. Jose would ideally like to see himself one day working professionally in the motion picture industry as a Concept Artist. He had previously worked on a low- budget SF/Super Hero Animation flick titled: “Shadow Runner”, designing the individual character’s spaceships. “They tend to depend more on technology than they do on their own superpowers”. He is also interested in the publication and gaming markets. To one of his many credits, which have included several fanzine covers and one semi-prozine cover and interior artwork.

  • Citizen Robots: Biopolitics, the Computer, and the Vietnam Period
Citizen Robots: Biopolitics, the Computer, and the Vietnam Period By Michael James Ryder (M.J. Ryder) Thesis Submitted in Fulfilment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of English Literature and Creative Writing Lancaster University October 2019 2 Abstract The Vietnam War coincided with an intense period of technological change in the US that marked a significant turning point in the relationship between the citizen and the state. While computer technology found new and deadly uses on the field of battle, it also found its way into people’s homes, giving the state the means through which to monitor and control subjects like never before. While Michel Foucault describes Vietnam as ‘the gates of our world’, this thesis argues that Vietnam stands rather as the gates of our biopolitical world – a period in which Foucault’s original concept of biopolitics is reborn in the computer age.1 To this end, this thesis examines some of the early impacts and implications of the computerized biopolitical state, and the robotized human subject. It offers an exploration of the ways in which biopolitical ideas can be used alongside science fiction texts to interrogate the cultural tendencies of the USA during the Vietnam War period, stretching from the start of the war in 1955 through to the war’s end in 1975 and the shadow cast in the years that follow. In doing so, it charts how human subjects are complicit in the means of their own oppression, and the ethical implications of the blurred distinction between the human and the machine.
