It reflects the cross- cutting, collaborative approach needed to rise to the many challenges of being a modern, open country which is exposed to permanent migratory flows. Managing and governing migration is the main objective of a plan that updates and renews the key lines in previous interdepartmental immigration plans, the first of which dates back to 1993. As you can see, for the first time we have replaced the word “immi- gration” by “migration”. This change is no accident but in fact quite the reverse, since it reflects the Catalan Government’s commitment to addressing the new dynamics of mi- gration that are becoming consolidated as a result of the current economic crisis. This could be summarised as fewer people coming in, although there continue to be some, and larger numbers leaving, especially but not only foreign-born people.

  • Immigration and the Welfare State in Spain
Social Studies Collection No. 31 The present study addresses the complex relationship between immigration and the welfare state in Spain. The number of immigrants in Spain has greatly increased in recent years, reaching levels similar to those found in the most developed countries in the European Union. Spain’s transformation into a host country for immigrants took place in times of vigorous economic growth and employment, a period of economic boom to which immigrants contributed decisively. The collapse of this long phase of Immigration and the Welfare growth has made immigration much more visible, and in particular, has sharpened debate on the impact of immigration on Spain’s 3State1 in Spain social protection system. This book aims to provide authoritative information on immigrants’ access to and use of welfare state benefits and services, but also on Francisco Javier Moreno Fuentes their contribution to financing the welfare state. With this data, the authors analyze the implications of immigration on the economic and María Bruquetas Callejo social sustainability of the welfare state in Spain, underscoring the role that the immigrant population has played in bringing to light the strengths and weaknesses of the social protection system. • 2005 – the Politics of Contemporary Spain
The Politics of Contemporary Spain The Politics of Contemporary Spain charts the trajectory of Spanish politics from the transition to democracy through to the present day, including the aftermath of the Madrid bombings of March 2004 and the elections that followed three days later. It offers new insights into the main political parties and the political system, into the monarchy, corruption, terrorism, regional and conservative nationalism and into Spain’s policies in the Mediterranean and the European Union. It challenges many existing assumptions about politics in Spain, reaching beyond systems and practices to look at identities and political cultures. It brings to bear on the analysis the latest empirical data and theoretical perspectives. Providing a detailed political analysis in an historical context, this book is of vital importance to students and researchers of Spanish studies and politics. It is also essential reading for all those interested in contemporary Spain. Sebastian Balfour is Professor of Contemporary Spanish Studies at the London School of Economics and Political Science. His research interests cover the history and politics of twentieth-century Spain. Recent publi- cations include: The End of the Spanish Empire 1898–1923 and Deadly Embrace: Morocco and the road to the Spanish Civil War. • Hurtling Towards Nothing Explaining the Escalation of the Contemporary Catalan Crisis
Hurtling Towards Nothing Explaining the Escalation of the Contemporary Catalan Crisis By Isabel Madeleine Seiden Submitted to Central European University Department of International Relations In partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. Supervisor: Professor Erin K. Jenne Word Count: 16,240 Budapest, Hungary 2019 CEU eTD Collection Abstract While Catalonia has been a part of a larger Spanish kingdom since well before the unification of Spain in the fifteenth century, there have been confrontations over the status of this relationship throughout their shared history. The central claims of the Catalan movement have shifted over time between nationalist, autonomist, federalist, and separatist, as has the relative strength and stability of Catalonia vis-a-vis Spain. Accordingly, the responses of the Spanish state to Catalan demands have varied considerably, from the brutal repression of Francisco Franco’s regime to the willing devolution of powers to Barcelona during Spain’s democratic transition. This paper will examine Spain’s responses to recent confrontations with Catalan nationalism, with the aim of explaining the shifting demands of the current Catalan movement from pro autonomy in 2004 to a unilateral declaration of independence in 2017. CEU eTD Collection Acknowledgements To my parents, who have no idea what I’m talking about but listen anyway; To my friends, who have now heard a lot more about Catalonia than they ever wanted to and yet still agree to spend time with me; To my advisor, Erin Jenne, because without a lot of poking, prodding, and late night email exchanges this thesis would not have been written; And to all of the other people, for all of the other things.
