2017 Ellenborough Over 50 Section Christmas Drawn Doubles Competition A fun event was held on Tuesday morning, 19th December, with a drawn doubles competition followed by a fish and chips meal and a quiz.

There were 36 players or 18 teams in the drawn doubles with 12 groups of 3 and the top two teams in each group going through. Four seeded pairs then got a bye to the quarter finals whilst the other 8 teams played knockout matches for the remaining four places.

Competition was fierce throughout but after some close quarter-finals the four semi-finalists were: Gill Toum- bas & Derek Marcus, Ron Smith & Mick Ryan, Thanos Morphitis & Rosetta DeLisle and Harold Clark & Dave Tyrell.

Gill and Derek were the winners of one semi-final. Despite losing their way a little and dropping the second game 12-14, they won the first and third games convincingly to reach the final. In the other semi-final, Thanos and Rosetta won in straight games against Harold and Dave despite a close second game. The final produced some excellent play by all four players. Thanos and Rosetta took the first two games 11-6 and 11-8 but Gill and Derek fought back, taking the third game 11-7. Thanos and Rosetta, however, were not to be denied and they came back strongly in the fourth to win it 11-5 and take the match by 3 games to 1. Well done to everyone who took part and congratulations to our winners and runners-up.

Ellenborough Table Tennis Club - Allowing Players Of All Abilities Fulfill Their Potential Ellenborough Table Tennis Club - Newsletter Club Volunteers Recognised by Enfield Council On Monday 16th October Joan and Peter Bayman represented Ellenborough TTC at Enfield Council’s twice-yearly 100 Hours Volunteering Awards, held at the Civic Centre in Silver Street. This event brings to- gether various voluntary groups to recognise those individuals who have given at least 100 hours of their time to voluntary work over the previous 12 months. As well as receiving awards themselves, Joan (pictured) and Peter collected certificates and limited edition badges for the following Ellenborough members who have given up their time to support the club: Harold Webb, Ian Allan, Nicky McKoy, David Wilson, Ron Smith, Zeynep Payet, Sureyya Aydin, Ruth Edelson, Rich- ard Bailey and Bernie Kelly.

Peter said “It is good for Ellenborough to be represented at these events, both to enable us to network with other voluntary organisations in Enfield and, equally importantly, to get the club noticed more both by Enfield Council and by local residents, many of whom still don’t know about us. Even some of our members may not realise quite how many hours are put in voluntarily by other members in order to keep the club running and, hopefully, improving. ” The next round of awards will take place in around April of next year and we have more members in mind to nominate at that time. If you are involved with any group in Enfield that relies on volunteers, why not suggest nominating some of them for the next round of awards? If you want more information, contact Peter or Joan.

Ellenborough Table Tennis Club - Allowing Players Of All Abilities Fulfill Their Potential Ellenborough Table Tennis Club - Newsletter Payet leads the way at Finlandia Open Author: Paul Stimpson

Denise Payet was the best English finisher at the Finlandia Open, ending in 16th position, one ahead of Karina Le Fevre. The duo were part of an English contingent also including Lois Peake, Evie Collier and Maria Tsaptsinos in the women’s events and Matt Leete in the men’s. Payet’s finish represented an improvement on her ranking of 22 going into the event and included a good 4-2 victory over the seventh-ranked player Maryia Kuchuck of Belarus. A total of 55 women competed in the singles, with Le Fevre just missing out on the top 16, finishing just below her ranking of 14th as a defeat to No 3 seed Alina Arlouskaya, also of Belarus, proved pivotal. Peake finished 20th – exactly the same as her ranking – while Collier was 38th from a ranking of 30th and Tsapt- sinos 51st after a tough run of matches, having been ranked 12th initially. Leete was ranked 29th in the men’s singles and ended up in 74th place in a field of 116. In the team events, Tsaptsinos and Peake were the most successful combination, reaching the third round.

Two of the girls who represent Ellenborough in the Junior British League, Millie Rogove, Cadet girls, and Anaya Patel, Junior Girls were competing for England in the Home International Tournament held over the 10th-12th November in Guernsey.

Junior Girls Team

Anaya was partnered by Ruby Chan and managed five out of six wins against Scotland, Ireland, Isle of Man, Jersey and hosts Guernsey.

There only defeat was against eventual winners Wales, as they finished the competition as Runners-up.

Junior Girls Individual

In the first round Anaya had a comfortable win over Amy Wesley of Guernsey 3-0, however she lost in the quarter final to Mia O’Rahilly-Egan of Ireland.

Cadet Girls Team

Millie Rogove was partnered by Gemma Kerr, this looked a pretty formidable team on paper and so it turned out in practise.

Millie & Gemma were undefeated against all six Home Nations, only dropping two sets on the way against Runners-up Ireland.

Cadet Girls Individual

Millie had a bye in the first round, then winning the quarter-final against Freya Melvin (IoM) 3-0.

A tougher Semi-final against Nicole Scott (Ire) was to follow, however, Millie proceded to the final with a 3-1 win.

This meant an all England final as Gemma had made her way through each round comfortably winning 3-0 each time against girls from Jersey, Scotland and Ireland.

Gemma came out on top in the final beating Millie 3-1 (-4, 6, 8, 5).

A really successful weekend for both Ellenborough Girls.

Urban continue too impress after strong win at BATTS Author: Matthew Shaw Report on Ellenborough guest team Urban TTC, this is their fourth match and have so far secured three wins and a draw and are currently lying in top position of the SBL Premier Division. Urban’s pursuit of the British League title continued in strong fashion as they picked up a superb victory at BATTS. The unbeaten league leaders faced a formidable task in Harlow, with BATTS fielding a strong side including Helshan Weerasinghe at three. But Urban’s strength in depth gave them the edge, with their number three Daniel Schaffer picking up two wins while the debuting Daniel Kosiba performed superbly to pick up a brace playing at number one. BATTS went ahead twice as Swede Malte Moregard defeated Szilard Gyorgy in five ends and Weerasinghe de- feated Alim Hirji. But it was level at the midway stage as Kosiba dispatched of Mathan Simon and Schaffer over- came a valiant effort from Jack Bennett. Crucially, Kosiba defeated Moregard 3-1. Although Weerasinghe levelled the match with his second win, defeat- ing Gyorgy in straight ends, Urban secured the victory as Hirji defeated Bennett 3-0 while Schaffer picked up his ninth win of the season by defeating Simon 3-1.

National Junior League North London Weekend 1 & 2 Weekend 1 Last season, many of the teams may recall that the Ellenborough table tennis arena’s air was enthralled in the skilful spice of the Graham Spicer team; but this season we have some new seasoning from the magnificent Mossford teams. So, on this first day, the leading team in Division 1 is Mossford A with a 4 point lead over Ellenborough A. Jaden Aulakh of Mossford A has hit the TTE rankings again winning all matches in the three rounds of the day. A good performance came from the close trailing of Ellenborough A’s Daniel Thomas and Thomas Charnock. Three teams in Division 2 have manufactured almost equal strength with Ellenborough B on top followed by Mossford C and The Reach Academy A. It appears that Victor Ostapenko and Cam’ron Malcolm of Ellenborough B, and Samuel Klein of Mossford C will produce good results if they continue to show their steady zeal in the future rounds. At the bottom end of both divisions the fading away of points is starkly noticeable and we shall no doubt expect promotion and relegation of one or two teams in each division during the course of the next event due on Sat- urday 25th. November 2017. This will mean that the match schedules will be adjusted on the day according to the promotion and relegation changes coming from the referee.

Weekend 2 The Division 1 progress made by the “Mossford boys” was spear-headed by Jaden Aulakh winning all of his 21 individual matches during the NJL at this season’s stage. Now on Day 2 Mossford A and Mossford B teams are equal on points at the top. Ellenborough A, especially as their player Thomas Charnock was unavailable this time round, suffered a pow- erful beating against these teams. Furhermore, Brentwood’s three players have so far won around half of their games which produced a steady upward climb from positions’ fifth to third - leaving Ellenborough A and BATTS in close pursuit. The Division 2 window has not changed significantly for Christmas as Mossford C and Ellenborough B were still pulling equal punches. Quality playing were from Ellenborough B’s Victor Ostapenko and Cam’ron Malcolm hitting around the 90% performance zone, and of Mossford C’s Jesse Bath and Yousef Abbasi showing signs of remarkable improvement in skill as the as the league matches progress. The great talking point was whether promotion and relegation were to be seen after round 5 of the day, but owing to insufficient shift of points in the upper teams of Division 2 the referee has not yet moved towards a change and would probably not think of a likely change until after round 10 in Day 3 on Saturday 27th. January 2018 Ellenborough Table Tennis Club - Newsletter

National Cadet League North London Weekend 1 & 2 Weekend 1 The Day 1 event opened with the formation of 14 teams split into 3 Divisions: 4 teams each in Divisions 1 and 2 playing 3 rounds of 9-set matches and 6 teams in Division 3 playing 5 rounds of 6-set matches. After checking in and registration, the matches started at 9.30 a.m. and ended around 4.00 p.m. As it was Remembrance Sunday, the referee, Arthur Clark, called for a two-minute intermission of silence at 11 a.m. which everyone worthily distilled out with respect. The high achievers in Divisions 1 and 2 were BATTS 1 and Ellenborough A respectively. Brentwoodcame lowest in Division 1, but after taking into consideration that their team consisted of only two players, the addition of their missing strongest player would not have made a distinctive enough boost to their points. Therefore, the referee has decided on a promotion and relegation switch – which means that Ellenborough A will move to Division 1 and Brentwood will move to Division 2 in the next round – i.e. on Day 2, Sunday 3rd. December. The points’ tables of Divisions 1 and 2 will, therefore, be wiped clean for a fresh start showing the newly pro- moted and relegated teams. But, Division 3 will proceed from its current stance – BATTS 2 and Ellenborough B currently hitting the top of its table, closely followed by The Reach ACAD C. Then, either during or after the course of Day 2 there will be some determination by the referee in making more switches between Divs. 1 and 2. It was unfortunate for Ellenborough B that it lost a significant few points on its potential road to Division 2 – which was owing to one match in which its team changed a player after the match had started, which forced a higher-ranking player to be in the wrong (lower) ranking position on the score sheet. The result of this fault was a draw of 3-3 between Ellenborough B and The Reach ACAD C. I am sure that on Day 2 the referee will announce a reminder to teams that any amendments to the players on the score sheets should be made only with consultation and approval by the control desk staff/referee. In that way, not only can rankings be double-checked but the TTE membership number/s and player-name/s can appear correctly on the score sheet as is required when it arrives for processing at , Milton Keynes. As sometimes happens, this report was held in abeyance a few days while a match query had to be resolved, but for now congratulations are duly deserved to the Division 1 players, Alex Howard and Ethan Willis, who won all their 5 individual matches for BATTS 1, and also to Vasi Kazakova winning 7 out of 8 individual matches for The Reach ACAD A; and good luck to the Division 2 players whose successes are shown clearly in the tables below.

Weekend 2 On this second day of the NCL played on the usual number of 12 tables at Ellenborough TTC, while players and visitors at opportune moments fed themselves from the bar and benefitted from Bribar’s attendance in the lounge area for sales/bat make-up, there was no glue spilled on the tables of the first two rounds of Division 1 when both BATTS 1 and Ellenborough A won 9-0 matches against Mossford A. But, The Reach Academy A showed its superior hand when it beat BATTS 1 8-1 and Ellenborough A 5-4. Mossford A retained its same players in the last round and appeared to gain strength but still lost 3-6 to The Reach Academy A, whose top player, Vasi Kazakova, has so far won 16 individual matches out of 17. In Division 2 Spins TT Academy and Brentwood won a near equal number of sets and respectively benefitted from the talents of Eathan Eaketts and Toby Kelly. The Division 3 results’ table shows Ellenborough B and BATTS 2 sparring very closely at the top but The Reach Academy C will attract interest in the next rounds due on Day 3 (Sunday 4th. March 2018) as their players Dan- iel Jago and Arron Neville could be in close combat with Ellenborough B’s players Omari Simmons-Duberry and Emily Ravetto – a big test for Ellenborough B as it has already just won 4-2 against BATTS 2, and simply won 5-1 (same as BATTS 2) against The Reach Academy C who, for the whole day, unfortunately only had two out of three players, and therefore lost out by two forfeited individual matches or sets.

Help Needed NCL/NJL 1- As Richard Graneau will not be carrying on the administration of the NL’s after this season, the club is des- perate to find a replacement for the National Cadet League which takes place on four undays each season, this runs from November to March. Richard will be able to help the new administrator by showing what is involved until the end of this season. Gordon Izatt has very kindly agreed to take care of the NJL which takes place on Saturdays. Unless we can find someone to help we will have to advise Table Tennis England that Ellenborough can no longer host this competition for the 2018/2019 season. I am sure which ever local club such as BATTS or Barnet etc take over will gladly take over and the Club will have a great deal of difficulty in ever running these competitions again. This is a vital revenue for the club and the club juniors, as well as giving our juniors home advantage. Anyone interested should email Ian Allan [email protected], Richard Graneau gra- [email protected] and Charlie Izatt [email protected] 2- Joan and Peter Bayman will no longer be running the bar from the next NJLcompetition on the 27th January. We need urgently club volunteers to run the bar for the remaining competition days on the 27th January, 24th February, 11th March and 25th March. If we cannot find any volunteers the bar will have to remain closed and a source of revenue for the club and club juniors will be lost. I don’t mind buy the food the day before and storing the food that remains unsold until the next event. Even if someone can help for two hours or more at a time I can help organising a roster. Anyone interested should email Ian Allan [email protected] urgently with the days and times that they can help. The competition days run from 9am to 4pm. Ellenborough Table Tennis Club - Newsletter
