In various inter- views Barks had referred to the “Landon correspondence course in cartooning” he’d taken when he was sixteen. Fascinated, I tried to find a copy of Landon’s course. After a couple of years of searching on eBay and other auction houses – where I was only able to find partial copies – I finally tracked down a com- plete copy from a New York rare book dealer. In the meantime, my research revealed that more than a few cartoonists from Barks’s generation had taken the Landon course. -

[email protected] Resumen La presencia de Alejandro Magno en el cómic ha sido prácticamente ignorada por los estudios sobre la recepción centrados tanto en la Antigüedad clásica en general como en la figura de este personaje en particular, y muy escasamente examinada por los que abordan el tratamiento de la Antigüedad en dicho género. Sin embargo, la existencia de más de doscientos títulos publicados a lo largo de casi un siglo que incorporan representaciones gráficas de Alejandro constituye un corpus con entidad más que suficiente como para ser reconocido en tanto que objeto de estudio por la investigación académica a la vista tanto de sus posibilidades educativas en el ámbito de la didáctica de la Historia como de la importancia del personaje como icono de referencia en el marco de la cultura popular contemporánea. Abstract The presence of Alexander the Great in comics has been virtually ignored by the reception studies both about Classical Antiquity and about the Macedonian conqueror, and very sparsely analysed by the research about the treatment of Antiquity in comic books. However, the existence of more than two hundred works published over almost a century with graphic representations of Alexander shapes a corpus with more than enough value to be recognized as object of study by academic research because of the educational possibilities of the most recent historical-biographical approaches from History teaching, and the importance of Alexander the Great as a reference icon in the contemporary popular culture. -

Conan Savage Tales #4 Ink Wash Art by Gil Kane and Neal Adams. Savage Tales #4 (Marvel Comics, 1974), original artwork for the story, “Night of the Dark god.” Pencils by Gil Kane and Neal Adams with inks by Neal Adams and ink wash by Pablo Marcos. Searching for his childhood sweetheart Mala, Conan returns to the humble home of his birth in Cimmeria, which he finds in ruins. Here, he discovers Mala’s weeping parents who in- form him that their beloved daughter has been taken north, captured by the vicious Vanir. The damsel’s grieving mother looks at Conan and says, “She...spoke often of you...” A dark and tragic tale of nostalgic woe, in the classic Conan tradition. This is a most impressive piece, which has Adams’ unmistak- ble imprint and style all over it and features Conan in every panel with some superb close-up shots, as only the living leg- end himself can do. Ink-wash Conan art is especially tough. Avengers #96 Art by Neal Adams - Great Ronan page. Original artwork from Avengers #96 page 16 (Marvel Comics, 1972), by the living legend himself, Neal Adams (pencils) with ink finishes by Adams, Tom Palmer and Alan Weiss. This is an impressive action page that prominently features the arch villain, Ronan the Accuser as he interrogates a very defiant Rick Jones, who shows the Kree Supremor just exactly what he thinks of him with a powerful jaw shattering blow to his head. Great multiple images of Ronan, who is gaining greatly in popularity especially since his major role in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie (2014) and, even though he was killed off in that film, there is talk of bringing him back for future feature films. -

REHeapa Winter Solstice 2018 THE RISE OF THE NEW HYBORIAN LEGION, PART THREE By Lee A. Breakiron As we saw in TNC #23, the Robert E. Howard United Press Association (REHupa) was founded in 1972 by a teen-aged Tim Marion as the first amateur press association (apa) devoted to Howard. Its first 20 bimonthly Mailings were passably successful, but leaned more toward comic books and fannish activities than anything of a scholarly nature. By #20 (Mar., 1976), semi-professional fanzinist Jonathan Bacon had become the second, and first elected, Official Editor. Membership (15) and Mailing content (~50 pages) were at the lowest ebb before or since. One problem was the existence of a competing apa, The Hyperborian League, dedicated to serious study of both Howard and Clark Ashton Smith, making a strong start in 1975 (see TNC #24). Reforms by Bacon started to make REHupa Mailings look less amateurish, which in turn attracted more and better members. Former, longtime REHupan James Van Hise wrote the first comprehensive history of REHupa through Mailing #175 [1] Like him, but more so, we are focusing only on noteworthy content, especially that relevant to Howard. Here are the highlights of Mailings #21 through #35. With Mailing #21 (May, 1976), Bacon had chosen to get away from the standard cover that had been used for most previous Mailings. He often commissioned artwork from professional artists for his other publications like his Fantasy Crossroads fanzine (see TNC #4), so he was able to use a Stephen Fabian cover. The fanzine copy requirement from each member, already at 40 to allow for extra “speculation” (spec) copies to be sent as samples to prospective new members, was raised to 50.
