Dear Mrs Harris,

I don’t know how much of the enclosed information on the Harris name will be of interest to you but this is all that I can discover from my records here at home. You did not mention any ages or dates to start from so I looked first at the 1881 census for any Harrises born in and there was only one born there and living in the East Anglia region. That is the Thomas Harris on the last of the attached sheets. Although he is listed as the son-in-law of William Ibbitt this cannot be right because he is unmarried, he must have been a step-son which means that Rebecca was either previously married to a Harris or that her maiden name was Harris and that Thomas was born before her marriage to William Ibbitt. I am sorry I can’t help any more with that one.

The rest of the sheets consist of information taken from the various parish registers etc. that I have studied over the years, a lot of this I already had on file so it has been a case of fitting it all together and hoping that I have not missed anything important.

If you find that there is any way in which I can be of further assistance please let me know but as far as I am aware all the Harris information that I can find is already in the lists.

Yours sincerely,

Norman Parry.

What a fascinating family tree, I wish my ancestors had left similar documents and photographs for prosperity, it would have made life a lot easier.

A copy of the Market Square photograph would be a welcome addition to our collection as also would be any pictures of family members where there is a direct Potton connection. I believe we have copies of the school photographs but if not they would also be useful.

The census information below is taken from my records at home, I have not had a chance to look again at the actual returns but there should not be any discrepancies.

The National Index for 1881 has 328 people with the name of Hercock (with spelling variations), birth dates, as calculated from census ages, range from 1800 to the youngest an infant in 1881. Of the 328, 61 are listed as heads of households. Largest concentrations :- By birth places :- Northants. 87, Cambs. 66, Rutland 33, Lincs. 26, London 24. By census places:- Northants. 68, Cambs. 55, London 37, Lincs. 35, Surrey 27, Rutland 26, Leics. 24.

I have not gone any deeper into the Index, it is so easy to get side tracked by non-essentials.

Note in the front of the transcription of the Edworth registers :- During the greater part of the 16th century the Pigotts were lords of the manor of Edworth. Thomas Pigott died in 1579, not in 1581 as previously stated 1 .The important marriage between counsellor Clement Pigott and Frances daughter of Thomas Pigott of Stratton (in Biggleswade) in 1600 does not seem to have been noted elsewhere. Thomas Pigott’s sons sold their interests in the manor to John Spurling 1 who would appear to have been a serjeant-at-law.

The business was sold, I believe in the 1950s, to the firm of Garners who owned the tanyard in Hitchin in . Potton’s tanyard eventually closed in about 1970, I don’t know whether any of the Company’s records have been preserved but if they have they will probably be in the Hertfordshire Record Office. It seems as if fellmongers moved between the various sites as is shown by the Russells in the list below.

Some of the early parish register entries below may not be to do with the same family as the one you are interested in which probably starts with the William & Hannah in 1777. The name Frances is most likely a transcription error in the lists produced from the original registers, a not uncommon occurrence. I believe it should be Hannah which would make more sense.

The Theobalds name in this area was originally TIBBLES with some spelling variations and the change occurred in the late 18th century. The story is that there used to be a large house near Ware in Hertfordshire owned by the Cecil family,. In 1607 King James took a fancy to it and exchanged Hatfield House for Theobalds, I am sure that the Cecils had the better part of the bargain. One source states that Theobalds was pronounced Tibbles but another one says that Tibbles was a family nickname for Theobalds. My theory is that a vicar of Potton, knowing about the house decided that Tibbles should become Theobalds. This is quiet feasible as the vicar of Potton at the time, William Affleck was also the vicar of Stamford not far from Burghley House, another of the Cecil mansions. It is strange that within living memory in Potton people by the name of Theobalds were still referred to as Tibbles in conversation.

Reg Charity Nos 290895 Mrs V.Thompson Sycamore Cottage Mr N.J.Parry Bainton 6 The Paddocks Bicester Potton Oxon OX6 9RL. Beds. SG19 2QD. 30 September 1999.

Dear Mrs Thompson,

Your letter has been passed to me by Jean McLennan, I am one of the committee members and to the best of my ability I try to answer any queries which relate to family history.

The Castleman/Pomfret marriage is the first mention of the Castleman name in Potton so we cannot help with the birth of Robert. I assume from your letter that you have the details of the parish register entries which continue from 1627 to 1732 when the name disappears from the local lists.

I note that you have a family story that the Castlemans were from Dorset, the British Vital Records Index issued recently by the Mormon Church shows the name in Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire and in Surrey in the 17th century. This index is a supplement to the IGI so it might be an idea to check that for earlier entries. If you don’t have easy access to a place that has the IGI available let me know and next time I am on the Internet I will look to see what is there, if anything.

There are three burial entries of Pomfrets which could be Alice’s family :-

1 Sep. 1607 John. 5 Apr. 1638 Alse (Alice ?) wife of Francis. 19 Dec.1638. Francis.

John could be a brother of Alice and Francis and Alse her parents, at least I hope so, that would give you one generation further back. Unfortunately these are the only Pomfret entries in the Potton registers and I have not found the name in any of the other local parishes for which I have information.

The Manor Court records, some of which have survived show Francis Pomfret as the bailiff or steward of one of the Manors which were owned at that time by the Burgoyne family who had homes in the adjacent village of Sutton as well as in Warwickshire and in London. One document describes Francis as being appointed attorney for one of the manor tenants, this could mean that he was merely acting on behalf of the tenant but might mean that he was a member of the legal profession which may be a clue to where to look next. Stewards of manors were often lawyers brought in by Lords of the Manors from elsewhere. The Pomfrets on my Mormon index are too late to be anything to do with Francis, again the IGI may be the only source of any further information. There is no reference to the name Castleman in the Manor Records, neither do they or the Pomfrets appear to have left any wills in Potton, they may have done elsewhere but I only have the list of Potton wills.

I am sorry not to have been more helpful but that is all there is. If you require any further help please let me know and I will see what I can do.

Yours sincerely.

Dear Mr Briers,

Thank you for your letter, for the revised family tree and for the copies of the 19th.century letters particularly the one from John Tyler to his son Reuben which is new to us although it has been mentioned in passing, more of that in a moment.

We have copies of the original seven letters as part of a series given to us by :- Mr.W.E.Robarts, PO Box 7032, Empangeni Rail 3910, Zululand. R.S.A.

Mr.Robarts (Bill) and his wife (Mavis) have visited Potton on more than one occasion and have donated material relating to the Robarts family to Potton History Society, altogether there are 33 letters dated between 1849 & 1863 and a few later newspaper cuttings etc. relating mainly to Emery Robarts’ son William Emery Robarts who became well known in S.Africa as an architect and surveyor and was, in 1887, Mayor of Durban. The letters are from a number of different friends and relatives, included is one from Elizabeth Furley written from Glasgow in Feb.1849 and another without a heading from ‘ Lizzy ‘ Furley in 1853 both to Martha Robarts, the first while she was still in Potton and the second to Port Natal. The letters are unsuitable for photocopying but if you are interested in these two Furley letters I should be able to transcribe them. Copies of two of our newsletters with items about these gifts are enclosed. Our newsletters have improved in presentation since these early days.

In 1987 the history society had some correspondence with :- Mrs.M.M.Andrews, 22 Parc-y-llan, Henllan, Denbigh, LL16 5AS. who was researching the Tyler family. Henry Tyler and Mary (nee Peters) were her gt.gt.grandparents and Ezra her gt.grandfather. She thought that it was possible that the Mary Peters who married Henry Tyler in 1821 was formerly Mary Cox but we were unable to confirm this, I believe the Peters family was from Gamlingay and I know of a Thomas Peters, a shoemaker and his family there at the right time.

Mrs. Andrews quoted from the John Tyler letter, a copy of which you have just sent and adds the information that he started the Leicester business which bore his name and that the company records from the 19th. & 20th.centuries are now in Leicester Record Office but then you probably know that.

Tucked into our Tyler folder is a slip of paper and I must admit I don’t know where it came from, with an address label, ‘ Jane King, 10 High Street, Orwell. Royston, Herts. SG8 5QN ‘; handwritten on it is the information that William Tyler, born at Roade, Northants c1771 married Barbara Richardson, born at Potton 1776 and that one of their offspring, Hannah b1818? married Philip King of Caxton, Cambs. and that Jane was descended from them. I would treat this information with some caution, Hannah Tyler married Henry King of Caxton 15 Oct.1838, his father was also a Henry, obviously Philip could be a later generation so I would accept that. I think that whoever wrote this had seen the 1851 census information that William was 80 and Barbara 75 and had then looked back at the Potton baptism register for a Barbara born around the right time and had found only one, Barbara Richardson bapt. 28 Sept.1776. Maybe this is right but having spent a considerable amount of time in Bedford RO one day last week searching Bedfordshire and adjacent counties for William Tyler’s marriage without success I have my doubts particularly as I came across a marriage of a Barbara Richardson and Thomas Stairn, 5 Jan.1796 in Cambridge. There is no proof either way and until the marriage of William Tyler and Barbara ? can be located this must be conjecture.

Jean,

I have had a quick look at local records and I agree that some of the information from Bert Brown is incorrect.

The marriage of Wm. Warboys and Elizabeth Bygraves was in Sutton not Potton, the date 20 May 1766 is right. The following entries are also in Sutton.

Warboys. bapt. 25 Dec.1766 John son of Wm. & Elizabeth. bur. 2 Jun.1767 “ “ “ “ bapt. 13 Mar.1768 John “ “ “ bapt. 13 Mar.1768 James “ “ “ bur. 14 Mar.1768 Elizabeth w/o John. mar. 5 May 1770 Wm. widr & Mary Westrop. bur. 19 May 1794 Mary w/o Wm. parish clerk. mar. 20 Oct.1795 Wm. widr & Ann Pritchett bapt. 15 Sep.1799 Mary Ann d/o Wm. & Ann, parish clerk. bur. 13 Feb.1828 Wm. aged 80. bur. 31 Jul.1833 Ann aged 77. There are a few other earlier entries which appear unconnected.

Westrope. bapt. 25 Dec.1775 Elizabeth d/o John & Elizabeth.

I can’t find any record of the marriage of James Warboys & Elizabeth Westrope in the 1790s. There are baptisms of Thomas 28 August 1799 & James 20 Apr.1801 in Potton but nothing further, it was as if the family moved or went non- conformist.

There is the marriage of James Warboys and a Susan Giggles of Sutton in Potton on 10 Jan.1828, the banns in Sutton give her name as Jiggle. There is no Susan Giggle in the Gamlingay baptism register for 1806 or thereabouts. But there is a Susan Jiggle the dau of James & Jane Jiggle bapt. in Sutton 3 Jan.1813, there was a sister Hannah baptised at the same time so Susan may have been a few years old at the time.

On 9 Apr 1826 there is a baptism of Eliza the natural dau of Susan Jiggle, a servant so it looks as if Susan was born well before 1813 and as the family first appeared in Sutton in that year she could have been born in Gamlingay.

I don’t know whether this confirms your research or not but if you want me to look up anything else let me know and I will see what I can find.

I sent an email to Bert and have had a reply, both are on the attached sheet, you will notice that he is very much in the dark and has very little correct information. I will leave it to you as to how far you go in searching out records for him but if you want me to look through what I have please ask and I will try to fit it in .
