Can the department provide an itemised list of these projects, including title, location, description and amount funded? Answer: Please refer to below table for itemised lists of projects addressing threatened species outcomes, including title, location, description and amount funded. INFORMATION ON PROJECTS WITH THREATENED SPECIES OUTCOMES The following projects were identified by the funding applicant as having threatened species outcomes and were assessed against the criteria for the respective programme round. Funding is for a broad range of activities, not only threatened species conservation activities. Figures provided for the Green Army are approximate and are calculated on the 2015-16 indexed figure of $176,732. Some of the funding is provided in partnership with State & Territory Governments. Additional projects may be approved under the Natinoal Environmental Science programme and the Nest to Ocean turtle Protection Programme up to the value of the programme allocation These project lists reflect projects and funding originally approved. Farewell to Rozelle Hospital Snip in Time - History Archives Callan Park was opened with much pomp and ceremony in 1884. This group of splendid sandstone buildings set in park-like river view grounds in Rozelle was considered - in 1901 - to be one of the finest institutions in the Commonwealth. The inclusion of Broughton Hall Estate into the Callan Park complex and a further six repatriation wards for victims of 'shell shock' [took place] after the First World War. PRA The Story, 2005. (Eds) Chesterson J, Maller S & Turner B p15; www.pra.org.au Services for people with a mental illness have been provided on the Rozelle Hospital site since 1876. Rozelle Hospital was formed in 1976 from the amalgamation of Callan Park Hospital and the Broughton Hall Psychiatric Clinic. The History of Rozelle Hospital is in tandem with the historical, social and political context of the mentally ill of a new colony and the progressive maturity of a nation. The progressive changes between 1870 and the present day evidence this maturity as social attitudes gradually changed towards the care and treatment of the mentally ill. The ‘Kirkbride Block’ was named after the eminent American, Dr William Kirkbride who was renowned for his pioneering work on progressive mental health care. Rozelle Hospital has continued its services through the intervening years up to the present day in these historic buildings. Rozelle with its long and rich history has provided a milieu of progressive learning in treatment and care of the mentally ill with which it can be justly proud. http://www.cs.nsw.gov.au/rozdev/history.htm In 1873, due to severe overcrowding at the Hospital for the Insane at Gladesville, the Parkes Government purchased the "Callan Estates" (then a rural setting) of just over 100 acres for £12,500; with the express purpose of building a large lunatic asylum. -

He continues to serve on the boards of the Western Sydney University Academy and External Affairs Committee. Having served on dozens of government boards over 30 years, he was a member of the Federal/State commission that chose the Badgerys Creek Airport site and then devised an advocacy campaign to secure Cabinet support. He served on the NSW Transport & Planning Blueprint Panel that first recognised Parramatta as Sydney’s second CBD and advises News Corp’s ‘Go West/Project Sydney’ editorial campaign. Christopher chaired the WestLine Partnership, which secured a light rail connection in the Olympic Corridor, and the Western Sydney Rail Alliance, which secured $5+ billion to build north/south rail connections to Badgerys Creek. He was founding Convenor of the Parramatta Partnership Forum and the Committee for Liverpool, and now manages the Canterbury-Bankstown Forum and Advance Blacktown civic leadership forums. He chairs the South Western Sydney Local Health Advisory Board and served as an adviser to the Western Sydney Parklands. Raised and educated in Parramatta, he was awarded Australian Honours for services to industry and community in 2014. Parish of Alexandria Map In 2016 we will celebrate the nd. c. 1830 150th anniversary of Moore Park’s dedication for public recreational purposes. Summary below extraced from Moore Park Heritage Report by CAB Consulting. Refer to Volume 2 for full report The area was originally part of Governor Lachlan Macquarie’s ‘Second Sydney Common’. After being set aside for public recreation space in 1866, it was Military Parades. ISN Line of roads leading to Botany 1850 renamed ‘Moore Park’ – after Charles Moore, who was Mayor of the City of Sydney at the time. From the very beginning, Moore Park was the centre of Sydney’s recreation, sporting and entertainment activities. Within the first couple of years, the area was transformed through the creation of sports facilities, the Zoological Garden and the Showgrounds. The extensive Sydney tram system serviced Moore Park, with one of the largest annual drawcards to the Park being the Royal Easter Show 1 2 3 (which was held at Moore Park for 115 years). As Sydney’s population grew and the needs for 1800’s 1830’s 1840’s 1850’s - 60’s outdoor recreation diversified, more ‘attractions’ were introduced to Moore Park, as long as they were considered to be ‘for the good of the community’. _ Moore Park is located within a network of tracks _ The Lachlan Swamps Water Reserve was _ Victoria Barracks was constructed 1841 – 1846 _ In 1850 the government proclaimed a new road from British Colonial occupation, which followed established within the Common in 1837, its naming using locally quarried sandstone and was occupied from Botany Road to Coogee. -
Why and How We Value Open Space
GENERATION AFTER GENERATION: WHY AND HOW WE VALUE OPEN SPACE Nancy Marshall, Linda Corkery UNSW, Sydney NSW, Australia INTRODUCTION When urban open space is perceived as ‘green infrastructure’ essential to the natural functioning of a city’s ecological, sociocultural and economic systems, its contributions can be measured and are valued. Value comes in many forms with recognition that large scale parklands are measured in different ‘currencies’ by different constituencies. These values and some example measures include: the parklands’ economic land value (calculated by the amount of money the land is worth if sold on the market), social value (usage levels, community capacity to protect the open space from potential development, social inclusion), cultural worth (diverse historical and current assets, social cohesion metrics), educational; health and developmental value (personal health metrics, recreation and play opportunities, relationship to nature) environmental value (natural respite area, aesthetic greening of urban areas, stewardship), ecological worth (air, water, flora and fauna contribution to the biosphere) and emotional or spiritual value (measured by advocacy, public support and sense of ownership, useage, mental well-being, shared public consciousness and meaning of the place). Traditionally, planners, landscape architects and other design professionals use their disciplinary knowledge and expertise to value, design and manage public open space. Decision-makers however, often opt for ‘the highest and best use paradigm’ when valuing open space, that is, indicating its worth as being equivalent to its potential developable land value. In contrast, citizens value parks more broadly and translate their value into socially constructed meanings based on their experience with them, and their connection to that place and to nature. -

Should you require further information please contact Aaron Callaghan, Parks and Recreation Planning Manager on (02) 9392 5634 or email [email protected] Kind regards, Elizabeth Richardson Chief Operating Officer, Director Development and Recreation Attachment Callan Park Draft Land Use Structure Plan Inner West Council Submission Callan Park - An Introduction Callan Park was acquired in the 1870’s for the specific purpose of constructing a mental asylum that later became Rozelle Psychiatric Hospital. The hospital closed in April 2008 and its services were relocated to Concord Hospital in Canada Bay. Many buildings on the site are vacant and in various states of disrepair. The public ownership of the site is in the custody of NSW Health with Inner West Council being the planning consent authority. Areas of the site are currently managed by the NSW Department of Planning, Environment and Energy and the Department of Health with the management divided according to precincts. Key features of Callan Park include: • Its location on Iron Cove and Sydney Harbour. • Its role as a regionally significant open space, being the third largest open space in inner Sydney behind Centennial and Moore Parklands (320 hectares) and the Royal Botanic Gardens and Domain (64 hectares).
