2 INTRODUCTION

In the month of December under Support A Pond initiative, GuruJal has been able to achieve the completion of one more pond site for pond restoration & rejuvenation and work is under process on 12 other pond sites. GuruJal has also been proceeding with the monitoring and evaluation of restoration & rejuvenation of ponds in Faridabad Municipal Corporation. Under Biodiversity Management initiative, development of Damdama and Kherla Biodiversity Park by GuruJal has been moving forward with the development of nursery and capacity building and training sessions. Under Waterproofing intervention, GuruJal has been able to achieve cleaning and checking of 1085 rain water harvesting structures and currently working on the installation of rain water harvesting structures in 10 government schools in Gurugram District. Under Connect The Drops initiative, we have been collaborating with IB schools in Gurugram to guide and create awareness among the young minds. Also, sessions with experts from GMDA and Forest Department have been conducted to gain information and elaborate GuruJal’s scope of work. In the following sections, the work updates, events and achievements of GuruJal under each vertical has been described.

1. Khentawas Pond Site – WWTP construction and landscaping work has been completed on the site and currently cleaning of the pond has been going on the site.

2. Kasan Pond Site – WWTP collection tank is under construction and solar panels are being installed on the pond site.

3. Budhera Pond Site – WWTP construction has been started at the pond site.

4. Municipal Corporation Faridabad Ponds Restoration & Rejuvenation – Pond Profiling and water and soil quality testing for 11 pond sites is completed. DPRs vetting by GuruJal is under process.

5. Drainage Committee Report has been submitted to Municipal Corporation Gurugram describing the status of drainage system in Gurugram and formation of the Drainage Committee

Major updates of the month under ‘Biodiversity Management’

1. Training Programme for Nursery Development – Training programme was organized at Damdama village on 2nd December 2020. Aim of the training was activation of Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) in Damdama and Kherla villages and to increase the engagement of the local community in the development of nursery and Biodiversity Park. Also, gardeners and supervisors were identified for developing the nursery.

Figure 7 - Attendees of the Nursery Development Training Programme 2. Capacity Building Programme – Capacity building programme was conducted at Raipur nursery in Sohna on 3rd December 2020. The training was facilitated by Mr. Rasheed khan from the Forest Department. Aim of the training was to understand the steps and procedure for plants propagation and nursery management. The training included sharing of knowledge regarding nursery tools, nursery beds planning, soil mixing proportion, sampling bags filling methods, sowing techniques, splice grafting manure selection etc.

3. Seed Collection Drive – Seed collection drive was conducted by GuruJal team with the help of Navjyoti Foundation (NIF) on 16th December 2020 at the hill area of Damdama and Kherla villages. The drive was attended by Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC) members, training members, youth and volunteers. Aim of the drive was to collect the native seeds and engage the community in Biodiversity Park development and informing them about importance of Aravalli species. The local people have also shared their valuable information about the plants with the team. Seeds Collected were - Pasendu, Dhau, Roonjh, Indradau, Jatropha, Kumuth, Surwal

11 New Rainwater Harvesting Structures in Government Schools

Construction of new rain water harvesting structures in 10 government schools of MCG and MC Farrukhnagar area, under the CSR support of SBI Card. Vetting of designs and administrative approvals is being done by GuruJal and the work is being implemented by Plan India Foundation.

Major updates of the month under ‘Connect the Drops’

1. Meeting was carried out on 16th December 2020 under the chairmanship of Additional Municipal Commissioner of MCG to review the process of work on pond sites and other administrative support that is required for Restoration and Rejuvenation of ponds in MCG area.

2. Collaboration with IB Schools – Meeting was held on 16th December 2020 regarding the proposal for collaboration with IB schools. Aim is to guide and create awareness among the young minds about water conservation through various activities involving CAS (Creative, Action and Service) principle of IB.

3. Expert Session with Mr. Vikas Malik, XEN (Infrastructure-II Division), GMDA – Session was conducted on 21st December 2020 at GMDA office, focusing on understanding the current water scenario of Gurugram, work and projects of GMDA in progress and scope of work and role for GuruJal under these projects.

4. Expert Session with Sh. Subhash Yadav, DFO cum Head (Urban Environment Division), GMDA – The session was conducted on 21st December 2020 regarding the development of Green Action Plan and Environment Action Plan for Gurugram. Speaker also shared the process of development of Aravalli Biodiverty Park and forest related laws and policies in the state of .

5. Expert Session with Dr. Sultan Singh, Chief Geospatial Officer (CGO) and Head of GIS Division, GMDA and Principal Scientist HARSAC – Session was conducted on 22nd December 2020 at GMDA office focusing on the use of One Map Gurugram portal and capacity development on satellite and real time data processing and analysis.

6. Collaboration with Deaf & Dumb Society in Gurugram for the development of Aravalli’s species nursery and designing their official logo and skill catalog.

7. Social Media Outreach – GuruJal has been trying to create awareness and make people conscious about water and biodiversity conservation through updates on social media platforms and in the last month Gurujal have been able to reach and engage more than 3000 people.
