WELCOME TO Zagreb, the capital of , ranks among the oldest cities in Central Europe, as is evident from documents dating back to 1094, when Kaptol diocese was established, and those from 1242 when neighbouring Gradec was proclaimed a free and royal city.

The city developed between Mountain and the river Sava which is one of the longest rivers in Croatia. In 1850 Kaptol and Gradec, together with surrounding settlements, were united under one administrative body.

Today Kaptol is the seat of the Archbishop and Gradec is the home of the Croatian Government and Parliament. Following unification, the city experienced a surge in the construction of prestigious buildings, squares and fountains. In addition to these, many parks and park-woods were established which today make Zagreb one of the greenest cities in Europe.

Zagreb prides itself on fostering multiculturalism, and values that which multiethnicity brings to its communities. Zagreb is a city of equal opportunities and embraces the identities of all its citizens.

As the administrative, political, economic, scientific and cultural centre of the Republic of Croatia, Zagreb is a vibrant city to live in, and to visit.

DOLAC MARKET A short distance from Ban Jelačić Square is located Zagreb's largest farmers market. It was established in the 1930’s and today sellers come from all over Croatia to sell their products here. Zagreb's cuisine today is influenced by both local and international dishes and this market is everyone's favourite place to get produce and ingredients. UPPER TOWN In this historic area of the city, in addition to the government buildings, several other interesting buildings, museums and beautiful vistas can be accessed. A short walk from the market is Kaptol where you will find the Gothic twin-spired Cathedral. A little further along is St. Mark's Square which can be accessed through the Stone Gate. This is the only remaining gate of the once fortified medieval part of the town and encompasses Zagreb’s most important shrine to the Virgin Mary. In the square you will find St. Mark's Church which was built in the 13th century and is known for its iconic glazed roof tiles. Instead of walking up to this area, the funicular rail which was built in 1888 can be taken and is a pleasant excursion. When exiting the station on top you will find Lotrščak Tower where the Grič Cannon is located, and which is fired every day at noon. A wonderful vista overlooking Zagreb is nearby. A stroll up, or down from this area is a must on, pedestrian friendly, Tkalcica Street with its many open-air cafes, restaurants and bars. To get to the National Theatre and several other points of interest, you can stroll through Lower Town which is a mash up of interesting architecture from the 18th and 19th centuries and includes secessionist, neo-baroque and art deco.
