Turning up the dial on the pressure cooker I tip my hat to the efforts of government departments Ministry of Social Development and Immigration New Zealand (INZ) for coming to Queenstown and speaking to employers as part of the Kia Kaha Queenstown Lakes Hub. They might not have good news to share, but along with local community and business advisors giving their time to offer advice, we have never had a better opportunity for informative direct contact. It was enlightening and frightening at the same time. I am becoming increasingly alarmed at the lack of foresight from the Government regarding our migrant workforce. I have been in business here since the late 1990’s and over this time have not only understood the important role migrants play in our workforce, but also their contribution to the vibrancy and quality of life in our region. Feeling the room last Thursday, it was obvious my fellow employers were deeply concerned for the future of their workforce. A quick straw poll of my peers found that we have 30-60% migrant employees making up our workforce. Most will be gone by September if they cannot get their visas renewed. That is despite wanting to keep them, pay them well and support their visa renewals. The humanitarian disaster is already Habebes team Priscila Ackermann and Tomas Giraldo with regular unfolding for those migrants already made redundant. But even for customer Peter Duerden, all pretty pumped to be at level 1!! a business that does not need to make positions redundant, this is a looming business continuity disaster. How are we supposed to rebuild from the disruption of lockdown restrictions, deal with a reduced market size and work our way back to a trading profi t, or at least limit the losses, while losing key trained staff as they cannot renew their visas - AND introduce 50% or more new staff to our workforce who all need training and introduction to our business culture. Talk about turning up the dial on the pressure cooker. Every effort must be made to employ a New Zealander fi rst. We all get that. Kiwis First. This is not new advice from INZ. However, INZ are now doubling down suggesting that the chances of visa renewals are unlikely and our migrant community head back to where they come from. The problem I foresee is that as the economy recovers, and more jobs become available, New Zealanders who have relocated here and taken the position previously held by a migrant, will move on, back to where they came from. For a tourism focused town, we will then have an issue attracting staff to replace those short-term Kiwi job fi llers. The last thing we need now is to send the backbone of our town packing only to need them again in 6-12 months’ time. I did sense a glimmer of understanding from the INZ staff in attendance at the Kia Kaha Queenstown Lakes Hub. However, do not expect that glimmer of understanding for this Queenstown specifi c problem to turn into a positive solution anytime soon. Scott Stevens [email protected]

The funds raised during this appeal will be an important part of this. Slim Slee Takes Home to Kurow First Prize Jet Boat Under normal circumstances, Kurow farmer Slim Slee has no trouble shoehorning a four metre wide paddock leveller through 4.2 metre gateways, but circumstances on Friday afternoon, May 29, were anything but normal. In his haste, and to his embarrassment, Slim’s leveller demolished a gate post on his way to share exciting news with wife Janina. Central Motor Speedway President Andy Erskine had just phoned to say Slim’s raffle ticket had won the first prize $90,000 Edgecraft jet boat. Like so many who win big prizes, Slim, and the Slee family’s good luck has a back story. “I was wandering around this year’s Wanaka A & P Show when it dawned on me that unusually, I hadn’t bought anything,” explained Slim with a wide grin. “Then while checking out the Claas site a smart-looking yellow and back deck jetboat sporting a large promotional panel caught my eye. I’m into motorsport and powerboating, and was happy to spend $100 on a raffle ticket to support Central Motor Speedway fundraising efforts. Than as I was about to walk away, I thought why not, and bought a second ticket. Lucky I did, as this was the winning ticket.” Both tickets were sold to Slim by Central Motor Speedway club member Jeannine Cunningham who put a tremendous amount of time and effort into navigating official avenues involved with setting up and running a raffle Last weekend Slim and Janina made a family weekend of collecting their brand new jetboat from the Edgecraft workshop in the Highlands Industrial Park. Loading their four daughters, two granddaughters and a friend into a hire van equipped with tow bar, Saturday was spent taking advantage of Queenstown attractions before they came across to Highlands early on Sunday afternoon. After some photo ops and briefing from Edgecraft owner and Central Motor Speedway promoter, Jason Scott, the prize boat was launched at Bannockburn Inlet. With six litres in full cry it roared off to be put through its paces and for Slim to get a feel of driving this close to 100kph speedster. Despite the chilly temps Slim and daughters returned from their first outing brimming with excitement and talking enthusiastically about future adventures on the Waitaki River and hydro lakes. Central Motor Speedway congratulates Slim as well as second, third, fourth and fifth prize winners, and thanks all who bought raffle tickets to make this such a very successful fundraiser that will go a long way to helping provide the racing and spectator amenities and facilities that have brought recognition to Central Otago as having one of the country’s best speedway tracks.

It’s thumbs up and smiles all round from the Slee family in their first prize Edgecraft jet boat. From left to right (front)... Sam (16), Quinn (granddaughter, 21 months), Slim Slee. Rear... Maggie Hartland (17, friend of Sam), Soni (22), Indi (granddaughter, 6 months), Janina (wife, mother & grandmother), Leah (24) and Sydney (13) LAKES WEEKLY BULLETIN | 16th June 2020 - 22nd June 2020 Page 16
