  • Film and Television Versions of Dracula Jonathan Bignell The
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Central Archive at the University of Reading A Taste of the Gothic: Film and Television Versions of Dracula Jonathan Bignell The genre of Gothic literature is difficult to define. I shall give a brief explanation of what is meant by the Gothic in literature, then narrow my focus onto Dracula and adaptations of the novel in TV and especially film. I shall attempt briefly to both describe the extent of Dracula's penetration into the film and TV media, and also to account for the fascination with this character and story. Victor Sage has characterised a diverse group of historical romance novels of the eighteenth century, including for example Lewis' The Monk (1796) and Mrs Radcliffe's Mysteries of Udolpho (1794), as offering to their contemporary readers an experience of terror and sublime feeling.1 This group of novels Sage calls 'the Gothick', a first surge of cultish popular fiction which was then followed by nineteenth century reelaborations of supernatural and macabre themes in Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1820) and novels by Wilkie Collins, Edgar Allen Poe and Bram Stoker, for example. It is this later nineteenth century phase of popular writing which is now normally termed the Gothic (without the 'k'), including works like The Woman in White (1860), Dracula (1897) and A Turn of the Screw (1898). Thus Stoker's Dracula was far from an isolated example of fiction about the eruption of unnatural creatures into the comfort of English society and into the apparently secure world of the middle-class home; by the end of the nineteenth century the literary tradition of the Englishman confronting savage beasts at home 1 and abroad was firmly established.

Despite this, a number of hor- ror films intended specifically for the child demographic have been made since the 1980s. This article situates the children’s horror subgenre in a generic and industrial context and addresses the key issues that its existence raises: the development of children’s horror as a subgenre in Hollywood; how children’s horror films, which, due to their target audience, must be inherently “less scary” than adult horror films, medi- ate their content, and negotiate issues of censorship in order to be recognizably of the horror genre while remaining “child-friendly”; and what pleasures the subgenre might serve its audience. The discussion concludes with analysis of the theme of “acceptance” in relation to the films ParaNorman (2012), Frankenweenie (2012), and Hotel Transylvania (2012): acceptance of monsters, of other people, and of the con- sumption of the horror genre as a valid children’s pastime. HILDREN ARE TRADITIONALLY CONSIDERED INNOCENT, VULNERABLE, AND IMPRESSIONABLE beings. Horror, which is typically considered a genre for adults, is one particular area of Cthe media from which children are often thought of as needing protection; however, re- search shows that children’s enjoyment of horror films goes back to at least as early as the advent of sound cinema,1 and the number of horror films made specifically for the child demographic has been steadily increasing since the 1980s.

  • EXILE and HOMECOMING1 Adina Ciugureanu Ovidius University
THE DRACULA MYTH: EXILE AND HOMECOMING 1 Adina Ciugureanu Ovidius University, ConstanŃa The myth of Dracula has become as worldwide famous as the McDonald’s burger, the Coca-Cola drink or the Nike sports shoes . It may therefore be discussed in terms of global production, circulation and reception though it is usually perceived as an American popular culture product. However, Dracula may be regarded as an exilic figure from Europe where he originated and where he ‘performed’ his terrific exploits. Since the publication of the novel Dracula by Bram Stoker in 1897, the protagonist has been the subject of thorough analysis as myth, icon, symbolism, sexuality, religion, disease, etc. He has been approached historically, psychoanalytically, linguistically, politically, mythically, culturally, post- structurally a.s.o., until it seemed that no outer or inner facet of his figure has been left unexplored. Yet, how about Dracula the immigrant, the self exiled from the mysterious land in the Carpathian area to America? In Stoker’s novel, Dracula traveled to England in his intention to conquer and subdue it. If he had fulfilled his plans, he would have become an immigrant, a newcomer to the western world. However, Dracula had managed to travel abroad in the late 1920s through his impersonation by Bela Lugosi, an immigrant himself, who made him famous to the American public. Originated in Eastern Europe, transferred to Western Europe and then to America, the myth of Dracula has proliferated into numberless alternative stories existing today and the character himself has metamorphosed into hundreds of alternative more or less scary figures.

  • Monsters, Dreams, and Discords: Vampire Fiction in Twenty-First Century American Culture
Monsters, Dreams, and Discords: Vampire Fiction in Twenty-First Century American Culture Jillian Marie Wingfield Submitted to the University of Hertfordshire in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy June 2018 Abstract Amongst recent scholarly interest in vampire fiction, twenty-first century American vampire literature has yet to be examined as a body that demonstrates what is identified here as an evolution into three distinct yet inter-related sub- generic types, labelled for their primary characteristics as Monsters, Dreams, and Discords.1 This project extends the field of understanding through an examination of popular works of American twenty-first century literary vampire fiction, such as Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series, alongside lesser-known works, such as Andrew Fox’s Fat White Vampire Blues. Drawing on a cultural materialist methodology, this thesis investigates vampires as signifiers of and responses to contemporary cultural fears and power dynamics as well as how they continue an ongoing expansion of influential generic paradigms. This thesis also incorporates psychological theories such as psychodynamics alongside theoretical approaches such as Freud’s consideration of the uncanny as means of understanding the undead as agents of fears and powerplays on a scale from individualized to global. Theories of power inform an argument for vampires as indicators of cultural threats, augmentations, or destabilizations within uchronic Americas. This thesis also draws on post-structuralism to inform an investigation of vampires as cultural indicators. Thus, theorists including Auerbach, Baudrillard, and Faludi are called on to underscore an examination of how modern undead narratives often defy – but do not disavow – cultural dominants, spanning a spectrum from reinforcing to questioning of environment.
