  • District Disaster Management Plan- Udupi
DISTRICT DISASTER MANAGEMENT PLAN- UDUPI UDUPI DISTRICT 2015-16 -1- -2- Executive Summary The District Disaster Management Plan is a key part of an emergency management. It will play a significant role to address the unexpected disasters that occur in the district effectively. The information available in DDMP is valuable in terms of its use during disaster. Based on the history of various disasters that occur in the district, the plan has been so designed as an action plan rather than a resource book. Utmost attention has been paid to make it handy, precise rather than bulky one. This plan has been prepared which is based on the guidelines from the National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM). While preparing this plan, most of the issues, relevant to crisis management, have been carefully dealt with. During the time of disaster there will be a delay before outside help arrives. At first, self-help is essential and depends on a prepared community which is alert and informed. Efforts have been made to collect and develop this plan to make it more applicable and effective to handle any type of disaster. The DDMP developed touch upon some significant issues like Incident Command System (ICS), In fact, the response mechanism, an important part of the plan is designed with the ICS. It is obvious that the ICS, a good model of crisis management has been included in the response part for the first time. It has been the most significant tool for the response manager to deal with the crisis within the limited period and to make optimum use of the available resources.

These ecosystems are under pressure on account of increased anthropogenic activities such as discharge of industrial and municipal sewage, land use, tourism, maritime transport, dumping at sea degrade the coast. It is necessary to protect these coastal ecosystems to ensure sustainable development. This requires information on habitats, landforms, coastal processes, water quality, natural hazards on a repetitive basis. The Coastal zone environmental management plan tool is also required for protection of environmental components. I. Introduction. Karnataka’s coast stretches for 320 kilometres along the three districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada. Of these, Uttara Kannada has 160-kilometre long coastline while 98 kilometres are in Udupi district and the rest in Dakshina Kannada. It’s three distinct agro-climatic zones range from coastal flatlands in the west with undulating hills and valleys in the middle and high hill ranges in the east that separates it from the peninsula. There is a narrow strip of coastal plains with varying width between the mountain and the Arabian Sea, the average width being about 20 km.

The physical geographical features have been largely responsible for the ecology and the cultural affinities of people with the biodiversity. The State can be broadly divided into 2 regions in terms of physical geography: Western Ghats and Eastern semi-arid plains. The secular and sacred cultural traditions linked with the biodiversity are more of a function of the physical geography of the region and the biodiversity supported by the geography and hence the climatic conditions. The Western Ghats is part of one of the megadiversity hot-spots in the world and harbour a range of cultural practices like sacred groves, sacred stretches of riverbeds, streambeds and tanks, sacred mangroves, sacred species of plants and animals. And historically it also supported totemism associated with the local people in the area. The Western Ghats consists of part of Uttara Kannada district, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts. consists of the Uttara Kannada, Shimoga, Chikmagalur, Hassan and Kodagu districts. Locally the whole region comprising the West Coast and the Western Ghats is referred as Malnad. The sacred elements (SEs) in the Malnad region can be described as follows: The most common SE in this region is sacred grove (SG). But the SGs vary in terms of size, ownership patterns and also with respect to the vegetation.

  • Clustering Visitors to a Religious Place 2012
CLUSTERING VISITORS TO A RELIGIOUS PLACE 2012 CLUSTERING VISITORS TO A RELIGIOUS PLACE: THE CASE OF UDUPI Rahul Shedbalkar Associate Professor Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration Manipal University Keith ShirlvinNigli AssociateProfessor Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration Manipal University Ajith Kumar SJ Assistant Professor Welcomgroup Graduate School of Hotel Administration Manipal University Presented by Rahul Shedbalkar, Keith ShirlvinNigli&Ajith Kumar SJ Page 1 CLUSTERING VISITORS TO A RELIGIOUS PLACE 2012 ABSTRACT: Travellers visiting spiritual destinations are typically influenced by religious inspirations. Though, this might not be the case for all travellers, since tourists to religious places may visit a destination not only for pilgrimage, but as well to please several desires intertwined with social, cultural and recreational aspects. This study tries to explore the drives and events of travellers visiting Udupi, a city known as a religious destination for Hindus, by undertaking a grouping approach. A self-administrated questionnaire was circulated to 250 visitors of Udupi during the month of May 2012. From the outcomes it is evident that even though the city is considered as one of the main religious places for Hindus, tourists are not a similar group. As an alternative, the analytical approach adopted produced three segments, namely the “ethnic tourists”, the “holidaymakers” and the “religious travellers”. Religiously encouraged travel to sacred places is perhaps the oldest and most predominant type of travel in human history. Although some researchers may dispute that “even to this present era, religion is among the most influential of motivators”, the influence of religion on tourist movements is still undeniable and very great.
