Marlene and I have dealt in old and rare books for over fifty years, along with being more gainfully employed for about thirty of the years. We joined the Antiquarian Booksellers’ Association of America and later the Provincial Booksellers Fairs Association in England and began to travel and do bookfairs and hunt books throughout American, England and Scotland, enjoying taverns and pubs and especially the local beers.

After I retired from teaching college English and we had more time to travel, we decided to develop collections: I decided on beer books and Marlene on cook books. We used bookseller directories to find the dealers with the kind of books we sought and after that their advice on where to go to taste the best local beers. Those dealers were more than happy to contact us when something we might want came their way. Eventually finding good beer books became harder and harder to find, even duplicates of this specialty which I thought I might be able to sell did not turn up. It was a natural change when we decided to use directories to travel in areas where we might find the best local beers and then, after a suitable time, look about for some books. Of course we bought other kinds of books that we thought might sell to help pay for the travel - before tasting beers.

The job took great stamina but we persevered and even did a bookfair in , of course still seeking the books.

The beer book collection has an extensive range from the ingredients used, the brewing process itself, the breweries, to the enjoyment of the product and the pubs and their architecture and the history of each of these areas. Reading in these books also increased our own pleasure. I guess that is what reading does, isn’t it? Especially when accompanied by a surprisingly tasty brew.

Since there is no bibliography of Beer and Brewing books I used the collection to start one. It is about finished now so I decided to sell the books so someone else could enjoy them. There never were many of the early ones printed and not many beer books in general. If you ever went into a rare book store asking for books on beer you know how difficult it is, not only to find any, but to convince the proprietor what it is you want. There are a hundred times more books on wine by comparison, even though beer is more popular throughout the world.

It is entirely possible that many of the books in this auction may not appear for sale again, and as we had printed on a sign over the exit of our store in Geneva, N. Y.: “The Time to Buy an Old Book Is When You See It.” The beer and cookbooks will only get more valuable.

Also included are records of various batches of beer brewed, with the quantities of hops, yeast and malt used, the gravity, etc. One of the ledger books from the Geneva period gives Alexander’s accounting to the government, being records “of Materials used and Fermented Liquors made and sold or removed for consumption or sale at the Brewery

Page 6 carried on by James Alexander in the Village of Geneva County of Ontario in the State of New York.” Alexander’s brewing operations were quite extensive, and significant in the business and commerce of the region. An article in the May 8, 1858 issue of the Oswego Commercial Times gives a fairly detailed outline of the brewery, in part: “Mr. James Alexander’s Brewery, on West Fourth Street, is certainly one of the best arranged and most convenient establishments for the purpose we have seen. Everything in the concern is in perfect gradation from the loft, which receives the barley, to the cellar which stores the beer… Mr Alexander is a scientific and practical brewer and maltster, and can turn out a superior article when he gets an equivalent price. He showed us some samples in his cellar of Pale Ale, equal to the far famed Nottingham, as clear as amber and sparkling as champagne. His family is of different qualities to suit various tastes some dark and heavy, and others light and pale, but all with a body that has good weight to it. Mr. Alexander first started a small brewery here many years since, which he sold out and erected a large and extensive concern on his farm, three miles up the river, which, when just put into operation, was unfortunately burned down, and being uninsured, Mr. Alexander sustained a most serious loss, which threw him out of the business until he was able to commence his pres- ent building, which he did only two years since on a small scale, which, at the close of the past year he found necessary to enlarge very considerably, to meet his increasing business. His new concrete malting floor is a model for the purpose, and his stock cellar is constructed with the main view of equable temperature at all season…” Normal wear associated with such archives, several of the covers are detached, but overall very good. (5000/8000)

Covers from September 1907 to February 1910. Columns include: “[Date]; [Vendor/ Customer]; Merchandise; Hops (Pounds & Amount); Malt (Pounds & Amount); Total.” The entries list just the name of the customer and the amounts; there are typed monthly summaries inserted at the appropriate places, and two pages of typed yearly summaries for 1905-1909 are at the front. Together, 3 ledgers. 46x34 cm. (18x13”) or a bit smaller, the first two disbound, the last in half leather and boards. San Francisco: 1903-1910 Account ledgers for what was to become the last producing malt house in San Francisco, located on Chestnut Street between Powell and Mason. The customers included a wide range of California breweries, among them Humboldt Brewing Co., North Pacific Brewing Co., Sunset Bottling Co., North Star Brewing Co., Anchor Shasta Brewing Co., and many many more. The company was founded by Joseph Schweitzer and George W. Bauer around 1870. Besides offer a glimpse into the economics of the malting and brewing industry on the West Coast, these ledgers are of great significance in bridging the period of the great earthquake and fire that struck San Francisco on April 18, 1906. Though there is a week’s interruption in the entries, it is amazing how quickly the company was able to get back in business, the main difference being that pencil was used for the entries, rather than pen. The building was extensively renovated around 2000, and turned into lofts. It was during this renovation that these ledger books were rescued. The first two ledgers are disbound, pages darkened, the second especially worn, many pages detached and chipped, some tears, rare survivors of the 1906 quake; Lot 27 the third is in very nice condition. ALL SALES HELD BY PBA GALLERIES ARE CONDUCTED PURSUANT TO SECTION 2328 OF THE COMMERCIAL CODE AND SECTION 535 OF THE PENAL CODE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA CONSIGNING BOOKS TO PBA GALLERIES The first step in consigning to PBA is to contact the Galleries, either by phone, fax, email or letter. It can then be determined whether the item or items under consideration would do well at auction. Following this, arrangements can be made for the delivery of the material to PBA. In the case of large consignments or libraries, a member of the staff may be able to view the books on location, and make arrangements for its transportation to PBA Galleries. Because of the costs involved, PBA discourages consignments with a total value of less than $1500. The frequency of auctions, and variety of subject matter, allows PBA Galleries to ensure quick turn-around time for items consigned. Books can appear at auction as quickly as 30 days and generally not more than 90 days following consignment. Commissions vary between 10% and 15%, depending on the selling price of an item. These commissions encompass all related costs including insurance, storage, cataloguing, illustrations, etc., except shipping. Payment is sent within 20 banking days of an auction.
