Si ba duan yan wei miao xiang 。 Seng qi san da 四 八 端 嚴 微 妙 相 。 僧 祇 三 大

xian gong jing 。 （Make a half bow） 咸 恭 敬 。 （問訊） The face is like a full moon and the eyes are like lotus. Heavens and humans are all respectful.
Yi qie zhu fo 。 Min nian zhong sheng 。 Wei shuo 一 切 諸 佛 。 愍 念 眾 生 。 為 說
shui chan dao chang zong fa 。 Jin dang gui ming 。 水 懺 道 場 總 法 。 今 當 皈 命 。
Yi qie zhu fo 。 一 切 諸 佛 。 All buddhas sympathized with sentient beings and therefore expounded the Dharma of water repentance. Now we should take refuge in all buddhas.
Yi qie zhu fo 。 Min nian zhong sheng 。 Wei shuo 一 切 諸 佛 。 愍 念 眾 生 。 為 說
shui chan dao chang zong fa 。 Jin dang gui ming 。 水 懺 道 場 總 法 。 今 當 皈 命 。
Yi qie zhu fo 。 （Make a half bow） 一 切 諸 佛 。 （問訊） All buddhas sympathized with sentient beings and therefore expounded the dharma of water repentance. Now we take refuge in all buddhas.

Li zhu fo yi 。 Ci fu chan hui 。 Zhong deng 禮 諸 佛 已 。 次 復 懺 悔 。 眾 等
ji jin shen xin ji jing 。 Wu chan wu zhang 。 即 今 身 心 寂 靜 。 無 諂 無 障 。 After we have paid homage to the Buddhas, we will continue to repent and be penitent. Now the body and mind are calm and quiet, with no flattery and no obstacle.
Zheng shi sheng shan mie e zhi shi 。 Fu ying ge 正 是 生 善 滅 惡 之 時 。 復 應 各
qi si zhong guan xing 。 Yi wei mie zui fang bian 起 四 種 觀 行 。 以 為 滅 罪 方 便 This is the moment for bringing forth the good thoughts and eradicating the evil ones. We should give rise to four contemplations as the expedience for eradicating offenses. 6

He deng wei si 。 Yi zhe guan yu yin yuan 。 何 等 為 四 。 一 者 觀 於 因 緣 。
Er zhe guan yu guo bao 。 San zhe guan wo zi 二 者 觀 於 果 報 。 三 者 觀 我 自
shen 。 Si zhe guan ru lai shen 。 身 。 四 者 觀 如 來 身 。 What are the four contemplations? First is to contemplate causes and conditions. Second is to contemplate retributions. Third is to contemplate our bodies. Fourth is to contemplate the body of the Tathagata.
Di yi guan yin yuan zhe 。 Zhi wo ci zui 。 第 一 觀 因 緣 者 。 知 我 此 罪 。
Jie yi wu ming 。 Bu shan si wei 。 Wu zheng 藉 以 無 明 。 不 善 思 惟 。 無 正
guan li 。 Bu shi qi guo 。 觀 力 。 不 識 其 過 。 First is to contemplate causes and conditions. We need to realize our offense were based on ignorance. We have false thoughts and do not have the right views. We are oblivious to our faults.
Yuan li shan you 。 Zhu fo pu sa 。 Sui zhu 遠 離 善 友 。 諸 佛 菩 薩 。 隨 逐
mo dao 。 Xing xie xian jing 。 魔 道 。 行 邪 險 逕 。 We distance ourselves from good friends, the buddhas, and the bodhisattvas. Instead, We follow the Mara’s way and take the evil and dangerous routes.
Ru yu tun gou 。 Bu zhi qi huan 。 如 魚 吞 鈎 。 不 知 其 患 。 We are like fish swallowing bait, not knowing the danger.
Ru can zuo jian 。 Zi chan zi fu 。 如 蠶 作 繭 。 自 纒 自 縛 。 We are like silkworms spinning cocoons, trapping and tangling ourselves. 7

Ru e fu huo 。 Zi shao zi lan 。 如 蛾 赴 火 。 自 燒 自 爛 。 We are like a moth flying toward fire, burning and destroying ourselves.
Yi shi yin yuan 。 Bu neng zi chu 。 以 是 因 緣 。 不 能 自 出 。 Owing to these causes and conditions, we are unable to escape the three realms.
Di er guan yu guo bao zhe 。 Suo you zhu e 第 二 觀 於 果 報 者 。 所 有 諸 惡
Bu shan zhi ye 。 San shi lun zhuan 。 Ku guo 不 善 之 業 。 三 世 輪 轉 。 苦 果
wu qiong 。 無 窮 。 Second is to contemplate the retributions of our actions. Due to all unwholesomeness and bad karma, we are subject to the cycle of rebirths and boundless retribution of suffering.
Chen ni wu bian 。 Ju ye da hai 。 Wei zhu 沈 溺 無 邊 。 巨 夜 大 海 。 為 諸
fan nao 。 Luo cha suo shi 。 Wei lai sheng si 煩 惱 。 羅 刹 所 食 。 未 來 生 死
Ming ran wu ya 。 冥 然 無 涯 。 We are drowning in an endless, huge ocean in the dark night, consumed by various afflictions and raksasas with no sight of the shore but the boundless water.
She shi bao de zhuan lun sheng wang 。 Wang si tian 設 使 報 得 轉 輪 聖 王 。 王 四 天
xia 。 Fei xing zi zai 。 Qi bao ju zu 。 下 。 飛 行 自 在 。 七 寶 具 足 。
Ming zhong zhi hou 。 Bu mian e qu 。 命 終 之 後 。 不 免 惡 趣 。 8

Even if one is born as the Cakravarti (sovereign king) who rules the four continents, possesses Saptaratna (seven jewels), and is able to fly freely everywhere, one still cannot escape from descending to the suffering realms after death.
Si kong guo bao 。 San jie ji zun 。 Fu jin 四 空 果 報 。 三 界 極 尊 。 福 盡
huan zuo 。 Niu ling zhong chong 。 還 作 。 牛 領 中 蟲 。 Even if one is born in the four heavens of formlessness, the highest in the Three Realms, one could be reborn as a bug in an oxen neck after the end of blessings.
Kuang fu qi yu 。 Wu fu de zhe 。 Er fu 况 復 其 餘 。 無 福 德 者 。 而 復
xie dai 。 Bu qin chan hui 。 Ci yi pi ru 懈 怠 。 不 勤 懺 悔 。 此 亦 譬 如
bao shi chen yuan 。 Qiu chu ying nan 。 抱 石 沉 淵 。 求 出 應 難 。 If the rest of us, who did not accumulate blessings and virtues, are slothful and lazy and do not seek repentance, it is like trying to escape after jumping into an abyss and holding onto a rock.
Di san guan wo zi shen 。 Sui you zheng yin ling 第 三 觀 我 自 身 。 雖 有 正 因 靈
jue zhi xing 。 Er wei fan nao hei an cong lin 覺 之 性 。 而 為 煩 惱 黑 闇 藂 林
zhi suo fu bi 。 Wu liao yin li 。 Bu neng 之 所 覆 蔽 。 無 了 因 力 。 不 能
de xian 。 得 顯 。 Third is to contemplate our physical bodies. Although we have Buddha Nature, the dark jungle of our afflictions conceal it. We lack the power of revealing the cause.
Wo jin ying dang fa qi sheng xin 。 Po lie wu 我 今 應 當 發 起 勝 心 。 破 裂 無 9

ming 。 Dian dao zhong zhang 。 Duan mie sheng si xu 明 。 顛 倒 重 障 。 斷 滅 生 死 虛
wei ku yin 。 偽 苦 因 。 Now we should give rise to a positive mind for cracking our ignorance and heavy offenses. We hope to end birth and death and the misleading causes of suffering.
Xian fa ru lai 。 Da ming jue hui 。 Jian li 顯 發 如 來 。 大 明 覺 慧 。 建 立
wu shang 。 Nie pan miao guo 。 無 上 。 涅 槃 妙 果 。 We hope to reveal the Tathagata’s great wisdom of enlightenment and attain the unsurpassed and wonderful fruit of nirvana.
Di si guan ru lai shen 。 Wu wei ji zhao 。 第 四 觀 如 來 身 。 無 為 寂 照 。
Li si ju 。 Jue bai fei 。 Zhong de ju zu 離 四 句 。 絕 百 非 。 眾 德 具 足
Zhan ran chang zhu 。 Sui fu fang bian 。 Ru yu 湛 然 常 住 。 雖 復 方 便 。 入 於
mie du 。 Ci bei jiu jie 。 Wei ceng zhan she 滅 度 。 慈 悲 救 接 。 未 曾 暫 捨 Fourth is to contemplate the Buddha’s body. It is transcendental with perfect virtues, without any faults, and always illuminating and abiding. Although the Buddha has entered nirvana, he never ceases to teach and transform the living beings compassionately. Sheng ru shi xin 。 Ke wei mie zui zhi liang jin 生 如 是 心 。 可 謂 滅 罪 之 良 津
Chu zhang zhi yao xing 。 除 障 之 要 行 。 Giving rise to this kind of mind is the best method to eradicate offenses and is essential in removing all obstacles.

Shi gu zhi cheng 。 Qiu ai chan hui 。 Zhong deng 是 故 至 誠 。 求 哀 懺 悔 。 眾 等
wu shi yi lai 。 Zhi yu jin ri 。 Zhang yang 無 始 以 來 。 至 于 今 日 。 長 養
fan nao 。 Ri shen ri hou 。 Ri zi ri mao 煩 惱 。 日 深 日 厚 。 日 滋 日 茂 Thus, we sincerely repent. From beginningless time until today, we have long nurtured afflictions. Our afflictions flourished and grew deeper day by day.
Fu gai hui yan 。 Ling wu suo jian 。 Duan chu 覆 盖 慧 眼 。 令 無 所 見 。 斷 除
zhong shan 。 Bu de xiang xu 。 Qi zhang bu de 眾 善 。 不 得 相 續 。 起 障 不 得
jian fo 。 Bu wen zheng fa 。 Bu zhi sheng seng 見 佛 。 不 聞 正 法 。 不 值 聖 僧
fan nao 。 煩 惱 。 It covered the wisdom eyes and prevented us from seeing right views. It prevented us from accumulating good deeds. When affliction arises, it creates the obstacle that we are not able to see the buddhas, listen to the right Dharma, and encounter the sagely sangha members.
Qi zhang bu jian buo qu wei lai 。 Yi qie shan 起 障 不 見 過 去 未 來 。 一 切 善
e ye xing chu li fan nao 。 Zhang shou ren tian 惡 業 行 出 離 煩 惱 。 障 受 人 天
zun gui zhi fan nao 。 Zhang sheng se wu se jie 尊 貴 之 煩 惱 。 障 生 色 無 色 界
Chan ding fu le zhi fan nao 。 禪 定 福 樂 之 煩 惱 。

When affliction arises, it creates the obstacle that prevents us from seeing the good and evil karma from the past and future and the ways to eradicate afflictions. When affliction arises, it creates the obstacle that we will be born as human or divine being, or that we will be enjoying the blissfulness of dhyana in the realms of form and formlessness.
Zhang bu de zi zai shen tong 。 Fei teng yin xian 障 不 得 自 在 神 通 。 飛 騰 隱 顯
Pian zhi shi fang 。 Zhu fo jing tu 。 Ting fa 徧 至 十 方 。 諸 佛 淨 土 。 聽 法
zhi fan nao 。 Zhang xue an na bo na shu xi 之 煩 惱 。 障 學 安 那 般 那 數 息
Bu jing yin yuan 。 不 淨 因 緣 。 As such, we will not have the supernatural powers of flying either invincibly or visibly to the buddha’s pure lands in the ten directions to listen to the Dharma. When affliction arises, it creates the obstacle for us in learning Anapana, the method for counting breaths, and the contemplation of the causes and conditions of impurities.
Guan deng zhu fan nao 。 Zhang xue nuan ding ren 。 觀 等 諸 煩 惱 。 障 學 煖 頂 忍 。
Di yi fa 。 Qi fang bian deng zhu fan nao 。 第 一 法 。 七 方 便 等 諸 煩 惱 。
Zhang xue ci bei xi she 。 Wen si xiu deng zhu 障 學 慈 悲 喜 捨 。 聞 思 脩 等 諸
fan nao 。 煩 惱 。 When affliction arises, it creates the obstacle in learning the stages of bodhisattva-hood: “warmth, zenith, and patience,” and the supreme Dharma, and in learning the seven expediencies. When affliction arises, it creates the obstacle in learning the practices of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, giving, and hearing, thinking, and cultivating the Dharma.
Zhang xue kong ping deng 。 Zhong dao jie 。 San guan 障 學 空 平 等 。 中 道 解 。 三 觀

yi zhu fan nao 。 Zhang xue zhu dao pin 。 Nian 義 諸 煩 惱 。 障 學 助 道 品 。 念
chu zheng qin gen li 。 Ru yi zu zhu fan nao 處 正 勤 根 力 。 如 意 足 諸 煩 惱
Zhang xue ba zheng dao 。 Shi xiang zhi fan nao 。 障 學 八 正 道 。 示 相 之 煩 惱 。
Zhang xue qi jue zhi 。 Bu shi xiang fan nao 。 障 學 七 覺 支 。 不 示 相 煩 惱 。 When affliction arises, it creates the obstacle in learning the Dharma of emptiness, equality, Middle Way, and the meaning of three contemplations. When affliction arises, it creates the obstacle in learning the thirty-seven conditions leading to bodhi: four bases of mindfulness, four correct endeavors, four steps towards supernatural power, five spiritual faculties, five powers, seven degrees of enlightenment, and the Noble Eightfold Path.
Zhang xue ba jie tuo 。 Jiu kong ding fan nao 。 障 學 八 解 脫 。 九 空 定 煩 惱 。
Zhang xue yu shi zhi 。 San san mei fan nao 。 障 學 於 十 智 。 三 三 昧 煩 惱 。 Affliction arises from obstacle in learning the eight liberations, nine meditation of emptiness, the ten powers of wisdom and the three samadhis.
Zhang xue san ming liu tong 。 Si wu ai fan nao 障 學 三 明 六 通 。 四 無 礙 煩 惱
Zhang xue liu du si deng fan nao 。 障 學 六 度 四 等 煩 惱 。 When affliction arises, it creates the obstacle in learning the three insights, six supernatural powers, four unhindered reasoning, the six paramitas and four virtues.
Zhang xue si she fa 。 Guang hua zhi fan nao 。 障 學 四 攝 法 。 廣 化 之 煩 惱 。

fan nao 。 煩 惱 。 When affliction arises, it creates the obstacle in learning the four embracing virtues of a bodhisattva, the Greater Vehicle (Mahayana), the four universal vows of a bodhisattva, the fifty-two stages of bodhisattva, the cultivation through innumerable period (asankhya), and its fruition of Boddhahood.
Ru shi xing zhang 。 Wu liang wu bian 。 如 是 行 障 。 無 量 無 邊 。 Such are the countless and boundless obstacles for practice.
Jin ri zhi dao ji ken xiang shi fang fo 。 Zun 今 日 致 禱 稽 懇 向 十 方 佛 。 尊

Yi qie fan nao 。 一 切 煩 惱 。 Today we sincerely pray to the buddhas of ten directions, honorable Dharma, and sagely sangha. We vow to repent and eradicate all the afflictions from the obstracles of actions.
Suo sheng gong de 。 Yuan zai zai chu chu 。 Zi 所 生 功 德 。 願 在 在 處 處 。 自
zai shou sheng 。 Bu wei jie ji ye xing zhi suo 在 受 生 。 不 為 結 集 業 行 之 所
hui zhuan 。 迴 轉 。 We vow that in every place we go, we can be reborn freely without being turned by the accumulated karma.
Yi ru yi tong 。 Yu yi nian qing 。 Pian zhi 以 如 意 通 。 於 一 念 頃 。 徧 至
shi fang 。 Jing zhu fo tu 。 She hua zhong sheng 十 方 。 淨 諸 佛 土 。 攝 化 眾 生 We vow that with the at-will supernatural power, we can at a single thought pervade the Buddha lands of ten directions and liberate sentient beings.
Yu zhu chan ding 。 Shen shen jing jie 。 Ji zhu 於 諸 禪 定 。 甚 深 境 界 。 及 諸
zhi jian 。 Tong da wu ai 。 Xin neng pu zhou 知 見 。 通 達 無 礙 。 心 能 普 周
Yi qie zhu fa 。 Le shou wu qiong 。 Er bu 一 切 諸 法 。 樂 說 無 窮 。 而 不

ran zhuo 。 染 著 。 We vow that we attain deep stages of various dhyanas. We vow that we understand various doctrines without any obstacles. We vow that our minds can permeate all dharmas. We vow that we blissfully and boundlessly expound all Dharma without attaching to them.
De xin zi zai 。 De fa zi zai 。 Fang bian 得 心 自 在 。 得 法 自 在 。 方 便
zi zai 。 自 在 。 We vow that we attain freedom in mind, freedom in the Dharma, and freedom in expediency.
Ling ci fan nao 。 Ji wu zhi jie xi 。 Bi 令 此 煩 惱 。 及 無 知 結 習 。 畢
jing yong duan 。 Bu fu xiang xu 。 竟 永 斷 。 不 復 相 續 。 We vow that this affliction and the accumulation of ignorance would be completely and forever broken.
Wu lou sheng dao 。 Lang ran ru ri 。 Fa yuan 無 漏 聖 道 。 朗 然 如 日 。 發 願
yi 。 Gui ming li zhu fo 。 已 。 皈 命 禮 諸 佛 。 We vow that the faultless and sagely way is as bright as the sun. After making these vows, we take refuge in the buddhas.
請起立。和尚念一句，大眾隨維那念一句。 Please stand up. Assembly repeats each sentence after the Presiding Monk and makes one prostration. Nan mo pi lu zhe na fo 。 南 無 毘 盧 遮 那 佛 。 We take refuge in Vairocana Buddha.
Nan mo ben shi shi jia mou ni fo （Make one prostration） 南 無 本 師 釋 迦 牟 尼 佛 （頂禮一拜） We take refuge in our orginal teacher Sakyamuni Buddha.

Chan fan nao zhang jing 。 Jin dang ci di chan hui 懺 煩 惱 障 竟 。 今 當 次 第 懺 悔
ye zhang 。 業 障 。 After we have paid homage to the buddhas, we next repent on the obstacle of afflictions. Now we are going to repent on the karmic obstacles one by one.
Fu ye zhe 。 Neng zhuang shi shi qu 。 Zai zai 夫 業 者 。 能 莊 飾 世 趣 。 在 在
chu chu 。 Bu fu si wei 。 Qiu li shi jie 處 處 。 不 復 思 惟 。 求 離 世 解
tou 。 脫 。 Karma can adorn worldly realms, making sentient beings not to think of seeking liberation everywhere they go.

Xing lei ge yi 。 Dang zhi jie shi ye li suo 形 類 各 異 。 當 知 皆 是 業 力 所
zuo 。 Fo shi li zhong 。 Ye li shen shen 。 作 。 佛 十 力 中 。 業 力 甚 深 。
Fan fu zhi ren duo yu ci zhong 。 Hao qi yi 凡 夫 之 人 多 於 此 中 。 好 起 疑
huo 。 惑 。 We should know that the retribution of Six Realms, with their different variety and shapes, is caused by karmic force. Among the ten powers of a Buddha, karmic power is very deep. Most common people have doubts in karmic power.
He yi gu er 。 何 以 故 爾 。 Why is that so?
Xian jian shi jian 。 Xing shan zhi ren 。 Chu xiang 現 見 世 間 。 行 善 之 人 。 觸 向
kan ke 。 Wei e zhi zhe 。 Shi shi xie ou 轗 軻 。 為 惡 之 者 。 是 事 諧 偶
Wei yan tian xia shan e wu fen 。 Ru ci ji 謂 言 天 下 善 惡 無 分 。 如 此 計
zhe 。 Jie shi bu neng shen da ye li 。 者 。 皆 是 不 能 深 達 業 理 。 This is because they see good people experience rough lives while bad people lead smooth lives. They say that ther is no difference in doing good and evil. But those who have this view are people who do not understand the principle of karma deeply.

He yi gu er 。 何 以 故 爾 。 Why is that so?
Jing zhong shuo yan 。 You san zhong ye 。 He deng 經 中 說 言 。 有 三 種 業 。 何 等
wei san 。 Yi zhe xian bao 。 Er zhe sheng bao 為 三 。 一 者 現 報 。 二 者 生 報
San zhe hou bao 。 三 者 後 報 。 The sutras say that there are three types of karma: one, present retribution; two, next life retribution; and three, future lives retribution.
Xian bao ye zhe 。 Xian zai zuo e 。 Xian shen 現 報 業 者 。 現 在 作 惡 。 現 身
shou bao 。 受 報 。 Firstly, present retribution karma means that one does evil now, one gets its retribution in this life.
Sheng bao ye zhe 。 Ci sheng zuo shan zuo e 。 生 報 業 者 。 此 生 作 善 作 惡 。
Lai sheng shou bao 。 來 生 受 報 。 Secondly, next life retribution karma means that one does evil or good in this life, one gets its retribution in the next life.
Hou bao ye zhe 。 Huo shi guo qu 。 Wu liang 後 報 業 者 。 或 是 過 去 。 無 量
sheng zhong 。 Zuo shan zuo e 。 Yu ci sheng zhong 生 中 。 作 善 作 惡 。 於 此 生 中

shou 。 Huo zai wei lai 。 Wu liang sheng zhong shou 受 。 或 在 未 來 。 無 量 生 中 受 Thirdly, future lives retribution means that one did evil in one’s countless past lifes, one gets its retribution in this life or future lifes.
Ruo jin xing e zhi ren 。 Xian zai jian hao zhe 若 今 行 惡 之 人 。 現 在 見 好 者
Ci shi guo qu sheng bao 。 Hou bao shan ye shou 此 是 過 去 生 報 。 後 報 善 業 熟
gu 。 故 。 If one who does evil now is enjoying good life, it is because one’s past life good karma and future lives retribution good karma have ripened.
Suo yi xian zai 。 You ci le guo 。 Qi guan 所 以 現 在 。 有 此 樂 果 。 豈 關
xian zai zuo zhu e ye 。 Er de hao bao 。 現 在 作 諸 惡 業 。 而 得 好 報 。 Therefore now one has such happy fruition. It is not caused by doing evil karma now yet enjoying good reward.
Ruo jin xing shan zhi ren 。 Xian zai ying ku zhe 若 今 行 善 之 人 。 現 在 縈 苦 者
Ci shi guo qu sheng bao 。 Hou bao e ye shou 此 是 過 去 生 報 。 後 報 惡 業 熟
gu 。 Xian zai shan gen li ruo 。 Bu neng pai 故 。 現 在 善 根 力 弱 。 不 能 排
qian 。 Shi gu de ci ku bao 。 Qi guan xian 遣 。 是 故 得 此 苦 報 。 豈 關 現
zai zuo shan 。 Er zhao e bao 。 在 作 善 。 而 招 惡 報 。 21

If one who does good now is mired in sufferings, it is because one’s past life life evil karma and later life evil karma have ripened. The power of one’s good roots is too weak to resolve the retribution.
Suo yi ran zhe 。 Xian jian shi jian 。 Wei shan 所 以 然 者 。 現 見 世 間 。 為 善
zhi zhe 。 Ren suo zan tan 。 Ren suo zun zhong 之 者 。 人 所 讚 歎 。 人 所 尊 重
Gu zhi wei lai 。 Bi zhao le guo 。 故 知 未 來 。 必 招 樂 果 。 Therefore, now one has such retribution of sufferings. It is not caused by doing good now yet receiving evil retribution. If we see one who does good and are praised and respected by others, we know that one will receive blissful reward in the future.
Guo qu ji you ru ci e ye 。 Suo yi zhu 過 去 既 有 如 此 惡 業 。 所 以 諸
fo pu sa 。 Jiao ling qin jin shan you 。 Gong 佛 菩 薩 。 教 令 親 近 善 友 。 共
xing chan hui 。 行 懺 悔 。 Since one had bad karma in the past, all the buddhas and bodhisattvas teach one to associate with good friends and to repent together. Jian shan zhi xhi 。 Yu de dao zhong 。 Ze wei 見 善 知 識 。 於 得 道 中 。 則 為
quan li 。 全 利 。 They also teach one to meet with good and knowledgeable people and get onto the Way.
Shi gu jin ri zhi cheng 。 Gui yi yu fo 。 是 故 今 日 至 誠 。 皈 依 於 佛 。 Thus today we sincerely take refuge in the Buddha.
Zhong deng wu shi yi lai 。 Zhi yu jin ri 。 眾 等 無 始 以 來 。 至 于 今 日 。

Ji e ru heng sha 。 Zao zui man da di 。 積 惡 如 恒 沙 。 造 罪 滿 大 地 。
She shen yu shou shen 。 Bu jue yi bu zhi 。 捨 身 與 受 身 。 不 覺 亦 不 知 。 From beginningless time until today, we have accumulated unwholesomeness like the sands in the Ganges River and committed offenses that fill up the great earth. We did not realize or know that we had been losing and gaining bodies.
Huo zuo wu ni 。 Shen hao zhuo chan 。 Wu jian 或 作 五 逆 。 深 厚 濁 纒 。 無 間
zui ye 。 罪 業 。 We carried out the five acts of defiance, entangled ourselves with deep turbidity and committed unceasing karmic offense.
Huo zao yi chan ti 。 Duan shan gen ye 。 或 造 一 闡 提 。 斷 善 根 業 。 We created the karma of Icchantika that cut off good roots.
Qing wu fo yu 。 Bang fang deng ye 。 輕 誣 佛 語 。 謗 方 等 業 。 We created the karma of slighting and accusing the teachings of the Buddha and slandering the Vaipulya (universal doctrine).
Po mie san bao 。 Hui zheng fa ye 。 破 滅 三 寶 。 毀 正 法 業 。 We created the karma of eradicating the Triple Gem and destroying the right Dharma.
Bu xin zui fu 。 Qi shi e ye 。 不 信 罪 福 。 起 十 惡 業 。 We created the karma of not believing in offenses and merits, raising the ten unwholesome karmas.
Mi zhen fan zheng 。 Chi huo zhi ye 。 迷 真 反 正 。 癡 惑 之 業 。 We created the karma of confusing true nature, opposing the correct, and miring in ignorance and delusion. 23

Bu xiao er qin 。 Fan li zhi ye 。 不 孝 二 親 。 反 戾 之 業 。 We created the karma of being unfilial to our parents.
Qing man shi zhang 。 Wu li jing ye 。 輕 慢 師 長 。 無 禮 敬 業 。 We created the karma of slighting and disrespecting our teachers and elders.
Peng you bu xin 。 Wu yi zhi ye 。 朋 友 不 信 。 無 義 之 業 。 We created the karma of not trusting our friends and not being loyal to them.
Huo zuo si zhong ba zhong 。 Zhang sheng dao ye 。 或 作 四 重 八 重 。 障 聖 道 業 。 We created the karma of four and eight grave offenses, thus hindering the sacred Way.
Hui fan wu jie 。 Po ba zhai ye 。 毀 犯 五 戒 。 破 八 齋 業 。 We created the karma of breaking the Five Precepts and Eight Precepts.
Wu pian qi ju 。 Duo que fan ye 。 You po 五 篇 七 聚 。 多 缺 犯 業 。 優 婆
se jie 。 Qing zhong gou ye 。 塞 戒 。 輕 重 垢 業 。 We created the karma of breaking the precepts of Upasaka.
Huo pu sa jie 。 Bu neng qing jing 。 Ru shuo 或 菩 薩 戒 。 不 能 清 淨 。 如 說
xing ye 。 行 業 。 We created the karma of breaking the Bodhisattva Precepts.
Qian hou fang bian 。 Wu fan xing ye 。 前 後 方 便 。 汙 梵 行 業 。 We created the karma of defiling pure living.

Yue wu liu zhai 。 Xie dai zhi ye 。 月 無 六 齋 。 懈 怠 之 業 。 We created the karma of being lax in observing six fasting days in a month.
Nian san chang zhai 。 Bu chang xiu ye 。 年 三 長 齋 。 不 常 脩 業 。 We created the karma of not constantly cultivating the three fasting months.
San qian wei yi 。 Bu ru fa ye 。 三 千 威 儀 。 不 如 法 業 。 We created the karma of not following the bhiksu’s three thousand regulations according to the Dharma.
Ba wan lu wei 。 Wei xi zui ye 。 八 萬 律 威 。 微 細 罪 業 。 We created the karma for not cultivating the precept of body and the wisdom of mind in the bodhisattva’s eighty thousand duties.
Bu xiu shen jie 。 Xin hui zhi ye 。 Chun qiu 不 脩 身 戒 。 心 慧 之 業 。 春 秋
ba wang 。 Zao zhong zui ye 。 八 王 。 造 眾 罪 業 。 We created the karma of various offenses related to the eight kings in the Spring-Autumn Period.
Xing shi liu zhong 。 E lu yi ye 。 行 十 六 種 。 惡 律 儀 業 。 We created the karma of acting the sixteen kinds of evil rules and ceremonies.
Yu zhu zhong sheng 。 Wu min shang ye 。 於 諸 眾 生 。 無 愍 傷 業 。 We created the karma of harming living beings with no sympathy.
Bu jin bu nian 。 Wu lian min ye 。 不 矜 不 念 。 無 憐 愍 業 。 We created the karma of no pity, no consideration, and no sympathy.
Bu ba bu ji 。 Wu jiu hu ye 。 不 拔 不 濟 。 無 救 護 業 。 We created the karma of not helping and protecting. 25

Xin huai ji du 。 Wu du pi ye 。 心 懷 嫉 妬 。 無 度 彼 業 。 We created the karma of harboring jealousy and not saving others.
Yu yuan qin jing 。 Bu ping deng ye 。 於 怨 親 境 。 不 平 等 業 。 We created the karma of treating enemies and love ones unequally.
Dan huang wu yu 。 Bu yan li ye 。 躭 荒 五 欲 。 不 厭 離 業 。 We created the karma of indulging in the five desires with no aversion.
Huo yin yi shi 。 Yuan lin chi zhao 。 Sheng dang 或 因 衣 食 。 園 林 池 沼 。 生 蕩
yi ye 。 逸 業 。 We created the karma of being reckless and indolence in gardens, jungles, and ponds.
Huo yi sheng nian 。 Fang zi qing yu 。 Zao zhong 或 以 盛 年 。 放 恣 情 欲 。 造 眾
zui ye 。 罪 業 。 We created the karma of indulging in passions and committing various offenses.
Huo zuo you lou shan 。 Hui xiang san you 。 Zhang 或 作 有 漏 善 。 廻 向 三 有 。 障
chu shi ye 。 出 世 業 。 We created the karma of conducting good deeds with outflows, transferring the merits to the three existence, and thus hindering us from transcending the world.
Ru shi deng zui 。 Wu liang wu bian 。 如 是 等 罪 。 無 量 無 邊 。 We created similar countless and boundless karma.

shi chan hui 。 是 懺 悔 。 Today we candidly repent to the Buddhas of ten directions, the Honorable Dharma, and sagely sangha.
Wu ming deng zui 。 Zhu bu shan ye 。 Jin jie 無 明 等 罪 。 諸 不 善 業 。 盡 皆
xiao mie 。 消 滅 。 We vow that all evil karma, ignorance, and other offenses are eradicated through this repentance.
Suo sheng fu shan 。 Yuan sheng sheng shi shi 。 Mie 所 生 福 善 。 願 生 生 世 世 。 滅
wu ni zui 。 Chu chan ti huo 。 Ru shi qing 五 逆 罪 。 除 闡 提 惑 。 如 是 輕
zhong 。 重 。 With the creation of blessings and virtues, we vow that in every life we can eradicate the five acts of defiance, and the delusion of lcchantika.
Zhu zui e ye 。 Cong jin yi qu 。 Nai zhi 諸 罪 惡 業 。 從 今 已 去 。 乃 至
dao chang 。 Shi bu geng fan 。 道 場 。 誓 不 更 犯 。 All the offenses and evil karma will go away from now on. We vow not to break the rules again in places of cultivation.

Ai xi fu nang 。 愛 惜 浮 囊 。 We vow that we will be born during the Buddha’s appearance and thus learn the pure Dharma. We vow to vigorously follow the precepts and maintain our duties like a seafarer cherishing his life buoy.
Lu du si deng 。 Chang biao xing shou 。 Jie ding 六 度 四 等 。 常 標 行 首 。 戒 定
hui pin 。 慧 品 。 We vow to perform the six paramitas and four immeasurable mindfulnesses. We vow to attain increasing enlightenment throug the cultivation of precepts, meditation, and wisdom.
Zhuan de zeng ming 。 Su cheng ru lai 。 San shi 轉 得 增 明 。 速 成 如 來 。 三 十
er xiang 。 Ba shi zhong hao 。 Shi li wu wei 二 相 。 八 十 種 好 。 十 力 無 畏
Da bei san nian 。 Chang le miao zhi 。 Ba zi 大 悲 三 念 。 常 樂 妙 智 。 八 自
zai wo 。 在 我 。 We vow to achieve Buddhahood, thus attaining the thirty-two distinguished marks, the eighty notable physical characteristics, the ten powers of fearlessness, the three mindfulnesses, supreme compassion, permanence, joy, wonderful wisdom, and the eight kinds of self liberation.

xiang cong 。 Yuan jie xiao mie 。 相 從 。 願 皆 消 滅 。 Now we will repent the karma one by one, major and minor, collective and individual, crude or fine, major or minor, spoken or unspoken. All of them, we wish to eradicate.
Bie xiang chan zhe 。 Xian chan shen san 。 Ci chan 別 相 懺 者 。 先 懺 身 三 。 次 懺

Shen san ye zhe 。 身 三 業 者 。 First we will repent the three karmas of body. Then we will repent the four karmas of speech. After that we will repent the other obstacles.

qin shou zhi shu 。 Bao ming wei si 。 Qi shi 禽 獸 之 殊 。 保 命 畏 死 。 其 事
shi yi 。 是 一 。 First, the karma of body is killing. According to the sutras, we must not kill animals because they are also fearful of death.
Ruo xun ci zhong sheng 。 Wu shi yi lai 。 Huo 若 尋 此 眾 生 。 無 始 以 來 。 或
shi wo fu mo xiong di 。 Liu qin juan shu 。 是 我 父 母 兄 弟 。 六 親 眷 屬 。
Yi ye yin yuan lun hui liu dao 。 以 業 因 緣 輪 廻 六 道 。 Additionally, since beginningless time, these living beings could have been our fathers, mothers, siblings, or relatives. Due to karma, causes, and conditions, we transmigrate in the Six Realms.
Chu sheng ru si gai xing yi bao 。 Bu fu xiang 出 生 入 死 改 形 易 報 。 不 復 相
shi 。 Er jin xing hai shi dan qi rou 。 Shang 識 。 而 今 興 害 食 噉 其 肉 。 傷
ci zhi shen 。 Shi gu fo yan 。 She de yu 慈 之 甚 。 是 故 佛 言 。 設 得 餘
shi 。 Dang ru ji shi 。 Shi zi rou xiang 。 食 。 當 如 饑 世 。 食 子 肉 想 。 We no longer reconginzed each other because we had exited birth, entered death, changed our appearances, and altered our retributions. But now we disregard our compassion by killing animals and eating their meat. Thus, the Buddha said, “One should visualize while eating meat: it is like eating the flesh of one’s offspring in times of famine. How can we eat the flesh of this fish?
He kuang shi dan 。 Ci yu rou ye 。 You yan 何 況 食 噉 。 此 魚 肉 耶 。 又 言 30

wei li sha zhong sheng 。 Yi cai wang zhu rou 。 為 利 殺 眾 生 。 以 財 網 諸 肉 。
Er ju shi e ye 。 二 俱 是 惡 業 。 In addition, killing living beings for profit and paying someone to kill living beings are both evil karma.”
Si duo hao jiao yu 。 Gu zhi sha hai 。 Ji 死 墮 號 呌 獄 。 故 知 殺 害 。 及
yi shi dan 。 Zui shen he hai 。 Guo zhong qiu 以 食 噉 。 罪 深 河 海 。 過 重 丘
yue 。 岳 。 When one who committed those offenses dies, he descends into the hell of screaming. We should know that by killing animals and eating them, we commit offenses that are as deep as the ocean, and as heavy as the mountain.
Ran wo deng wu shi yi lai 。 Bu yu shan you 然 我 等 無 始 以 來 。 不 遇 善 友
Jie wei ci ye 。 皆 為 此 業 。 Hence, since beginningless time we had not associated with benevolent friends. It is due to these offenses.
Shi gu jing yan 。 Sha hai zhi zui 。 Neng ling 是 故 經 言 。 殺 害 之 罪 。 能 令
zhong sheng 。 Duo yu di yu e gui shou ku 。 眾 生 。 墮 於 地 獄 餓 鬼 受 苦 。 According to the sutras, the offense of killing can cause sentient beings to descend into the realms of hell and hungry ghost where one would suffer.
Ruo zai chu sheng 。 Ze shou hu bao cai lang 。 若 在 畜 生 。 則 受 虎 豹 豺 狼 。

Ying yao deng shen 。 鷹 鷂 等 身 。 If one is born in the realm of animals, one could be born as a tiger, leopard, wolf, eagle, or sparrowhawk.
Huo shou du she 。 Fu xie deng shen 。 Chang huai 或 受 毒 蛇 。 蝮 蠍 等 身 。 常 懷
e xin 。 惡 心 。 One could be born as a poisonous snake or scorpion that always harbors evil mind.
Huo shou zhang lu 。 Xiong pi deng shen 。 Chang huai 或 受 麞 鹿 。 熊 羆 等 身 。 常 懷
kong bu 。 恐 怖 。 One could be born as a deer or bear that always harbors fear.
Ruo sheng ren zhong 。 De er zhong guo bao 。 Yi 若 生 人 中 。 得 二 種 果 報 。 一
zhe duo bing 。 Er zhe duan ming 。 者 多 病 。 二 者 短 命 。 If one is born in the realm of human, one receives two kinds of retributions: many illnesses and a short life.
Sha hai shi dan 。 Ji you ru shi 。 Wu liang 殺 害 食 噉 。 既 有 如 是 。 無 量
zhong zhong 。 Zhu e guo bao 。 Shi gu zhi cheng 種 種 。 諸 惡 果 報 。 是 故 至 誠
Qiu ai chan hui 。 求 哀 懺 悔 。 Since killing has such countless evil retributions, we sincerely repent.
Zhong deng zi cong wu shi yi lai 。 Zhi yu jin 眾 等 自 從 無 始 以 來 。 至 于 今

ri 。 You ci xin shi 。 Chang huai can du 。 日 。 有 此 心 識 。 常 懷 慘 毒 。
Wu ci min xin 。 無 慈 愍 心 。 From beginningless time to today, we were malicious and not compassionate.
Huo yin tan qi sha 。 Yin chen yin chi 。 Ji 或 因 貪 起 殺 。 因 嗔 因 癡 。 及
yi man sha 。 以 慢 殺 。 We killed because of greed, anger, ignorance or arrogance.
Huo xing e fang bian 。 Shi sha yuan sha 。 Ji 或 興 惡 方 便 。 誓 殺 願 殺 。 及
yi zhou sha 。 以 呪 殺 。 We vowed to kill, wished to kill, or used incantation to kill.
Huo po jue hu chi 。 Fen shao shan ye 。 Tian 或 破 决 湖 池 。 焚 燒 山 野 。 畋
lie yu bu 。 獵 漁 捕 。 We demolished lakes, burned hills, hunted animals, or caught fishes.
Huo yin feng fang huo 。 Fei ying fang quan 。 或 因 風 放 火 。 飛 鷹 放 犬 。 We set fire when there was wind or we used eagles and dogs for hunting.
Nao hai yi qie 。 Ru shi deng zui 。 Jin xi 惱 害 一 切 。 如 是 等 罪 。 今 悉
chan hui 。 懺 悔 。 We angered and harmed all the living beings. Now we repent all such offenses. 33

Huo yi kan qiang keng bo 。 Cha ji gong nu 。 或 以 檻 弶 坑 撥 。 扠 戟 弓 弩 。
Tan she fei niao 。 Zou shou zhi lei 。 彈 射 飛 鳥 。 走 獸 之 類 。 We used cages, snares, pits, pokers, pitchforks, halberds, bows, and cross-bows to hunt the birds and animals on foot.
Huo yi gu wang zeng diao 。 Liao lu shui xing 。 或 以 罟 網 罾 釣 。 撩 漉 水 性 。
Yu bie yuan tuo 。 Xia xian luo bang 。 Shi ju 魚 鼈 黿 鼉 。 蝦 蜆 螺 蚌 。 濕 居
zhi shu 。 之 屬 。 We used nets and fishing rods to hunt the water creatures like fishes, fresh water turtles, sea turtles, water lizards, shrimps, clams, conches, and oysters.
Shi shui lu kong xing 。 Cang cuan wu di 。 Huo 使 水 陸 空 行 。 藏 竄 無 地 。 或
chu yang ji zhu 。 Niu yang quan shi 。 E ya 畜 養 雞 猪 。 牛 羊 犬 豕 。 鵞 鴨
zhi shu 。 之 屬 。 There is no place for the creatures of water, land, and air to hide. We reared chickens, pigs, cows, goats, dogs, ducks, and geese.
Zi gong pao chu 。 Huo lin ta zai sha 。 Shi 自 供 庖 厨 。 或 賃 他 宰 殺 。 使
qi ai sheng wei jin 。 Mao yu tuo luo 。 Lin 其 哀 聲 未 盡 。 毛 羽 脫 落 。 鱗
jia shang hui 。 Shen shou fen li 。 Gu rou xiao 甲 傷 毀 。 身 首 分 離 。 骨 肉 銷

sui 。 Bo lie tu ge 。 Pao shao zhu zhi 。 碎 。 剝 裂 屠 割 。 炮 燒 煑 炙 。
Chu du suan qie 。 楚 毒 酸 切 。 We cooked them by ourselves or hired other people to kill them. Before their crying ceased, we stripped their feathers, broke their shells and scales, beheaded them, crushed their bones and meat, torn them apart, cut them up and cooked them, inducing tortuous suffering.
Heng jia wu gu 。 Dan shi yi shi zhi kuai kou 橫 加 無 辜 。 但 使 一 時 之 快 口
De wei shen gua 。 Bu guo san cun she gen er 得 味 甚 寡 。 不 過 三 寸 舌 根 而
yi 。 Ran qi zui bao 。 Yang lei yong jie 。 已 。 然 其 罪 報 。 殃 累 永 劫 。
Ru shi deng zui 。 如 是 等 罪 。 We carried out these malicious acts on the innocents simply because we wanted to satisfy our quick appetite. The sensation for the three-inch tongue is only very little but the retributions of the offenses extend to many kalpas.
Jin ri zhi cheng 。 Jie xi chan hui 。 今 日 至 誠 。 皆 悉 懺 悔 。 Today we sincerely repent on all such of offenses.
You fu wu shi yi lai 。 Zhi yu jin ri 。 又 復 無 始 以 來 。 至 于 今 日 。
Huo fu xing shi xiang fa 。 Jiang chang jiao zheng 。 或 復 興 師 相 伐 。 疆 場 交 爭 。
Liang zhen xiang xiang 。 Geng xiang sha hai 。 兩 陣 相 向 。 更 相 殺 害 。 From beginningless time to today, we rallied the troops to war, killing one another.

Huo zi sha 。 Jiao sha 。 Wen sha huan xi 。 或 自 殺 。 教 殺 。 聞 殺 歡 喜 。
Huo xi tu kuai 。 Lin wei xing lu 。 Peng zai 或 習 屠 儈 。 賃 為 刑 戮 。 烹 宰
ta ming 。 Xing yu bu ren 。 Huo zi bao nu 他 命 。 行 於 不 忍 。 或 恣 暴 怒
Hui ge wu ren 。 揮 戈 舞 刃 。 We killed others ourselves, instructed people to kill, or were delighted when we heard killing. We slaughtered or hired mercenaries to kill. We practiced killing lives or intolerable acts of violence, wielding weapons and knives.
Huo zhan huo ci 。 Huo tui zhe keng qian 。 Huo 或 斬 或 刺 。 或 推 著 坑 塹 。 或
yong shui chen ni 。 Huo se xue huai chao 。 Tu 用 水 沉 溺 。 或 塞 穴 壞 巢 。 土
shi zhui dian 。 Huo yi che ma lin li 。 Jian 石 磓 磹 。 或 以 車 馬 躙 轢 。 踐
ta yi qie zhong sheng 。 Ru shi deng zui 。 踏 一 切 眾 生 。 如 是 等 罪 。 We hacked or stabbed, buried with earth or drowned with water, blocked off burrows or ruined nests, using dirt and rocks or running over with carriages or horses, trampling on all sentient beings. Such are the sins.
Wu liang wu bian 。 Jin ri fa lu 。 Jie xi 無 量 無 邊 。 今 日 發 露 。 皆 悉
chan hui 。 懺 悔 。 Today we openly and sincerely repent all such countless and boundless offenses.

You fu wu shi yi lai zhi yu jin ri 。 Huo 又 復 無 始 以 來 至 于 今 日 。 或

zhong sheng 。 眾 生 。 From beginningless time to today, we had abortion or used toxic chemicals and poisonous spells to harm and kill living beings.
Ken tu jue di 。 Zhong zhi tian yuan 。 Yang can 墾 土 掘 地 。 種 植 田 園 。 養 蠶
zhu jian 。 Shang sha zi shen 。 煑 繭 。 傷 殺 滋 甚 。 We caused many killings by clearing land for farming or rearing and boiling the silkworms.
Huo da pu wen rui 。 Tao nie zao shi 。 Huo 或 打 撲 蚊 蚋 。 搯 嚙 蚤 虱 。 或
shao chu fen sao 。 Kai jue gou qu 。 Wang hai 燒 除 糞 掃 。 開 决 溝 渠 。 枉 害
yi qie 。 一 切 。 We swat mosquitoes or crushed lice. We harmed many beings by burning manure or channeling dikes.
Huo dan guo shi 。 Huo yong gu mi 。 Huo yong 或 噉 菓 實 。 或 用 穀 米 。 或 用
cai ru 。 Heng sha zhong sheng 。 菜 茹 。 橫 殺 眾 生 。 We killed living beings by eating fruits, consuming grains or vegetables.
Huo ran qiao xin 。 Huo lu deng zhu 。 Shao zhu 或 然 樵 薪 。 或 露 燈 燭 。 燒 諸

chong lei 。 蟲 類 。 We burned various insects by lighting firewood or exposing candles and lamps.
Huo qu jiang cu 。 Bu xian yao dong 。 Huo xie 或 取 醬 醋 。 不 先 搖 動 。 或 瀉
tang shui 。 Jiao sha chong yi 。 湯 水 。 澆 殺 蟲 蟻 。 We did not shake sauce and vinegar before using them. We poured hot water on insects to kill them.
Ru shi nai zhi xing zhu zuo wo 。 Si wei yi 如 是 乃 至 行 住 坐 臥 。 四 威 儀
zhong 。 Chang chang shang sha 。 Fei kong zhuo di 。 中 。 常 常 傷 殺 。 飛 空 著 地 。 In our four respect-inspiring demeanors of walking, standing, sitting, and sleeping, we frequently harm and kill microscopic living beings in the air and on the ground.
Wei xi zhong sheng 。 Fan fu shi an 。 Bu jue 微 細 眾 生 。 凡 夫 識 闇 。 不 覺
bu zhi 。 不 知 。 As common people, we are ignorant and without wisdom.
Jin ri fa lu 。 Jie xi chan hui 。 今 日 發 露 。 皆 悉 懺 悔 。 Today we openly repent all the offenses.
You fu wu shi yi lai 。 Zhi yu jin ri 。 又 復 無 始 以 來 。 至 于 今 日 。
Huo yi bian zhang jia suo 。 Hang xie ya la 。 或 以 鞭 杖 枷 鏁 。 桁 械 壓 拉 。

long xi 。 Duan jue shui gu 。 Ru shi zhong zhong 籠 繫 。 斷 絕 水 穀 。 如 是 種 種
Zhu e fang bian ku nao zhong sheng 。 諸 惡 方 便 苦 惱 眾 生 。 From beginningless time to today, we used whip, staff, flair, wooden collar, and fetters on living beings. We pressed, pulled, flogged, beat, threw, trampled, treaded, detained, bound, caged, tied, starved, and performed other similar evil actions on living beings.
Jin ri zhi cheng 。 Xiang shi fang fo 。 Zun fa 今 日 至 誠 。 向 十 方 佛 。 尊 法
sheng zhong 。 Jie xi chan hui 。 Yuan cheng shi chan 聖 眾 。 皆 悉 懺 悔 。 願 承 是 懺
hui 。 Sha hai deng zui 。 Suo sheng gong de 。 悔 。 殺 害 等 罪 。 所 生 功 德 。 Sheng sheng shi shi de jin gang shen 。 Shou ming wu 生 生 世 世 得 金 剛 身 。 壽 命 無
qiong 。 窮 。 Today we sincerely repent all the offenses in the buddhas of ten directions, the honorable Dharma, and sagely sangha. Through this repentance on killing, we vow to attain the Vajra body and boundless life-span from generation to generation.
Yong li yuan zeng 。 Wu sha hai xiang 。 Yu zhu 永 離 怨 憎 。 無 殺 害 想 。 於 諸
zhong sheng 。 De yi zi di 。 眾 生 。 得 一 子 地 。 We vow to stay away from grudges. We vow not to have any intention of killing living beings.
Ruo jian wei nan 。 Ji e zhi zhe 。 Bu xi 若 見 危 難 。 急 厄 之 者 。 不 惜

shen ming 。 Fang bian jiu tuo 。 身 命 。 方 便 救 脫 。 If we see living being in danger, we would save them without regard for our own life.
Ran hou wei shuo 。 Wei miao zheng fa 。 Shi zhu 然 後 為 說 。 微 妙 正 法 。 使 諸
zhong sheng 。 Du xing jian ying 。 Jie meng an le 眾 生 。 覩 形 見 影 。 皆 蒙 安 樂 After that, we would expound the wonderful right Dharma to them. So all sentient beings will abide in peace and joy.
Wen ming ting sheng 。 Kong bu xi chu 。 Wo jin 聞 名 聽 聲 。 恐 怖 悉 除 。 我 今
ji sang 。 Gui yi yu fo 。 (Please stand up) 稽 顙 。 皈 依 於 佛 。 （請起立） They would be at ease with what they see and fearless with what they hear. Now we take refuge in the Buddha. 和尚念一句，大眾隨維那念一句。 Assembly repeats each sentence after the Presiding Monk and makes one prostration. Nan mo pi lu zhe na fo 。 南 無 毘 盧 遮 那 佛 。 We take refuge in Vairocana Buddha.
Nan mo ben shi shi jia mou ni fo （Make one prostration） 南 無 本 師 釋 迦 牟 尼 佛 （頂禮一拜） We take refuge in our orginal teacher Sakyamuni Buddha.
Nan mo a mi tuo fo 。 南 無 阿 彌 陀 佛 。 We take refuge in Amitabha Buddha.
Nan mo mi le fo （Make one prostration） 南 無 彌 勒 佛 （頂禮一拜） We take refuge in Maitreya Buddha.

Nan mo bao sheng fo 。 南 無 寶 勝 佛 。 We take refuge in Ratnaketu Buddha.
Nan mo jue hua ding zi zai wang fo （Make one prostration） 南 無 覺 華 定 自 在 王 佛 （頂禮一拜） We take refuge in Flower Enlightenment Buddha.
Nan mo jia sha chuang fo 。 南 無 袈 裟 幢 佛 。
We take refuge in the Kasaya Buddha. Nan mo shi zi hou fo （Make one prostration） 南 無 師 子 吼 佛 （頂禮一拜） We take refuge in Lion’s Roar Buddha.
Nan mo wen shu shi li pu sa 。 南 無 文 殊 師 利 菩 薩 。 We take refuge in Manjusri Bodhisattva.
Nan mo pu xian pu sa （Make one prostration） 南 無 普 賢 菩 薩 （頂禮一拜） We take refuge in Samantabhadra Bodhisattva.
Nan mo da shi zhi pu sa 。 南 無 大 勢 至 菩 薩 。 We take refuge in Mahasthama Bodhisattva.
Nan mo di zang pu sa （Make one prostration） 南 無 地 藏 菩 薩 （頂禮一拜） We take refuge in Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva. 41

Li zhu fo yi 。 Ci fu chan hui 。 Jie dao 禮 諸 佛 已 。 次 復 懺 悔 。 刼 盜
zhi ye 。 之 業 。 After we have homage to the buddhas, next, we will repent the offenses of stealing.
Jing zhong shuo yan 。 Ruo wu shu ta 。 Ta suo 經 中 說 言 。 若 物 屬 他 。 他 所
shou hu 。 Yu ta wu zhong 。 Yi cao yi ye 守 護 。 於 他 物 中 。 一 草 一 葉
Bu yu bu qu 。 He kuang qie dao 。 不 與 不 取 。 何 況 竊 盜 。 The sutras say, one should not take even a blade of grass or a leaf that belongs to or under the protection of another that is not given to him, not to mention stealing.
Dan shi zhong sheng 。 Wei jian xian li 。 Gu yi 但 是 眾 生 。 惟 見 現 利 。 故 以
zhong zhong 。 Bu dao er qu 。 Zhi shi wei lai 種 種 。 不 道 而 取 。 致 使 未 來
Shou ci yang lei 。 受 此 殃 累 。 But when sentient beings see something they want, without thinking about the future consequences, will try all possible means to get it. This leads to endless suffering in the future.

Shi gu jing yan 。 Jie dao zhi zui 。 Neng ling 是 故 經 言 。 劫 盜 之 罪 。 能 令
zhong sheng 。 Duo yu di yu e gui shou ku 。 眾 生 。 墮 於 地 獄 餓 鬼 受 苦 。 The sutras say, the offenses of stealing can cause sentient beings to be born in hell and as hungry ghosts.
Ruo zai chu sheng 。 Ze shou niu ma lu luo 。 若 在 畜 生 。 則 受 牛 馬 驢 騾 。
Luo tuo deng xing 。 Yi qi suo you shen li xue 駱 駝 等 形 。 以 其 所 有 身 力 血
rou 。 Chang ta su zhai 。 肉 。 償 他 宿 債 。 Or they can be born as cows, horses, mules or camels that have to repay the past debts through hard labors.
Ruo sheng ren zhong 。 Wei ta nu bi 。 Yi bu 若 生 人 中 。 為 他 奴 婢 。 衣 不
bi xing 。 Shi bu chong kou 。 Pin qiong kun ku 蔽 形 。 食 不 充 口 。 貧 窮 困 苦
Ren li dai jin 。 人 理 殆 盡 。 If they are born as humans, they will be born as slaves that are poor and destitute without enough food or clothing.
Jie dao ji you ru shi ku bao 。 Shi gu jin 劫 盜 既 有 如 是 苦 報 。 是 故 今
ri zhi cheng 。 Qiu ai chan hui 。 日 至 誠 。 求 哀 懺 悔 。 Today, we sincerely repent these offenses of stealing.
Zhong deng zi cong wu shi yi lai 。 Zhi yu jin 眾 等 自 從 無 始 以 來 。 至 于 今

Kao zhi wei qu 。 拷 直 為 曲 。 We used weapons to threaten others or used our high status and power to take things from people. Or, we relied on our association with powerful people and forced others to give their treasures to us. We framed people for stealing, forced them to surrender their possessions and kept them for ourselves.
Wei ci yin yuan 。 Shen li xian wang 。 Huo ren 為 此 因 緣 。 身 罹 憲 網 。 或 任
xie zhi 。 Ling ta cai wu 。 Qin gong yi si 邪 治 。 領 他 財 物 。 侵 公 益 私 Qin si yi gong 。 Sun bi li ci 。 Sun ci 侵 私 益 公 。 損 彼 利 此 。 損 此
li bi 。 Ge ta zi rao 。 利 彼 。 割 他 自 饒 。 These actions caused us to go to jail later on. We took things that belong to the public and kept them for ourselves or we took things that belong to others and claimed that those were belonged to the public. We benefit ourselves by taking from others or the public.
Kou yu xin lin 。 Qie mo zu gu 。 Tou du 口 與 心 悋 。 竊 沒 租 估 。 偷 渡

guan jin 。 Si ni gong ke 。 Cang yin shi yi 關 津 。 私 匿 公 課 。 藏 隱 使 役 We said that we will give things to others but we didn’t mean it and never did and we tried to evade taxes, and tried many more forms of stealing.
Ru shi deng zui 。 Jie xi chan hui 。 如 是 等 罪 。 皆 悉 懺 悔 。 We repent all offenses such as these.
You fu wu shi yi lai 。 Zhi yu jin ri 。 又 復 無 始 以 來 。 至 于 今 日 。
Huo shi fo fa seng wu bu yu er qu 。 Huo 或 是 佛 法 僧 物 不 與 而 取 。 或
jing xiang wu 。 Huo zhi ta si wu 。 Huo gong 經 像 物 。 或 治 塔 寺 物 。 或 供 yang chang zhu seng wu 。 Huo ni zhao ti seng wu 養 常 住 僧 物 。 或 擬 招 提 僧 物
Huo dao qu wu yong 。 Shi shi bu huan 。 或 盜 取 誤 用 。 恃 勢 不 還 。 Since beginningless time, we also took things that were property of the Buddha, the Dharma, or the sangha without asking, which include sutras, Buddha images and statues, things used in the temple, or offerings made to the sangha assembly of the temple.
Huo zi jie 。 Huo dai ren 。 Huo fu huan dai 或 自 借 。 或 貸 人 。 或 復 換 貸
lou wang 。 漏 忘 。 Sometimes, we borrowed things from the temple without the intention of stealing but never returned them or we just kept them on purpose.
Huo san bao wu 。 Hun luan za yong 。 Huo yi 或 三 寶 物 。 混 亂 雜 用 。 或 以

Cai ru guo shi 。 Qian bo zhu mu 。 Zeng cai 菜 茹 果 實 。 錢 帛 竹 木 。 繒 綵
fan gai 。 Xiang hua you zhu 。 幡 盖 。 香 花 油 燭 。 We mixed the possessions of the Triple Gem with general daily items such as rice, salt, sauces, cooking fuels, vinegar, vegetables, fruit, money, cloths, bamboo, wood, banners, canopies, pennants incense, flowers, and candles.
Sui qing zhu yi 。 Huo zi yong 。 Huo yu ren 隨 情 逐 意 。 或 自 用 。 或 與 人 We took them at will either for our own use or we gave them to other people.
Huo zhai fo hua guo 。 Yong seng man wu 。 Yin 或 摘 佛 花 菓 。 用 僧 鬘 物 。 因
san bao cai wu 。 Si zi li ji 。 Ru shi 三 寶 財 物 。 私 自 利 己 。 如 是
deng zui 。 Wu liang wu bian 。 等 罪 。 無 量 無 邊 。 We took flowers or fruits that were offered to the Buddha and used things offered to the sangha assembly for our personal purpose.
Jin ri can kui 。 Jie xi chan hui 。 今 日 慚 愧 。 皆 悉 懺 悔 。 Today, we sincerely repent countless offenses such as these.
You fu wu shi yi lai 。 Zhi yu jin ri 。 又 復 無 始 以 來 。 至 于 今 日 。
Huo zuo zhou xuan peng you 。 Shi seng tong xue 。 或 作 周 旋 朋 友 。 師 僧 同 學 。

Fu mo xiong di 。 Liu qin juan shu 。 Gong zhu 父 母 兄 弟 。 六 親 眷 屬 。 共 住
tong zhi 。 Bai yi suo xu 。 Geng xiang qi wang 同 止 。 百 一 所 須 。 更 相 欺 誷 Since beginningless time, we took advantage of our friends, our teachers, fellow sangha members, parents, siblings, and close relatives who we lived with, took things we need from them, and lied to them about it.
Huo yu xiang lin bi jin 。 Yi li tuo qiang 。 或 於 鄉 鄰 比 近 。 移 籬 拓 墻 。
Qin ta di zhai 。 Gai biao yi xiang 。 侵 他 地 宅 。 改 標 易 相 。 We also took advantage of our neighbors by building fences beyond our property lines or we changed the deeds of other’s property to become our own.
Lu lue zi cai 。 Bao zhan tian yuan 。 Yin gong 虜 掠 資 財 。 包 占 田 園 。 因 公
tuo si 。 Duo ren di dian 。 Ji yi cun ye 託 私 。 奪 人 邸 店 。 及 以 村 野 We even robbed others of their belongs or simply occupied fields that did not belong to us. We took people’s business, stores or farmlands in the name of public use but kept for ourselves.
Ru shi deng zui 。 Jin xi chan hui 。 如 是 等 罪 。 今 悉 懺 悔 。 We sincerely repent the aforementioned offenses.
You fu wu shi yi lai 。 Huo gong cheng po yi 又 復 無 始 以 來 。 或 攻 城 破 邑
Shao cun huai zha 。 Tou mai liang min 。 You ta 燒 村 壞 柵 。 偷 賣 良 民 。 誘 他
nu bi 。 奴 婢 。 Since beginningless time, we attacked cities and burned down villages, sold innocent people to slavery, and took other people’s servants as our own. 47

Huo fu wang ya wu zui zhi ren 。 Shi qi xing 或 復 枉 壓 無 罪 之 人 。 使 其 形
cu xue ren 。 Shen bei tu suo 。 Jia yuan po 殂 血 刃 。 身 被 徒 鎖 。 家 緣 破
san 。 Gu rou sheng li 。 Fen zhang yi yu 。 散 。 骨 肉 生 離 。 分 張 異 域 。
Sheng si ge jue 。 Ru shi deng zui 。 生 死 隔 絕 。 如 是 等 罪 。 We framed and tortured innocent people, wounding their bodies and causing them to be locked in jail. This caused their families to be separated, sent to far away places, and they never saw each other again.
Wu liang wu bian 。 Jin xi chan hui 。 無 量 無 邊 。 今 悉 懺 悔 。 We also sincerely repent countless offenses like these.
You fu wu shi yi lai 。 Zhi yu jin ri 。 又 復 無 始 以 來 。 至 于 今 日 。
Huo shang gu bo huo 。 Di dian shi yi 。 Qing 或 商 估 博 貨 。 邸 店 市 易 。 輕
cheng xiao dou 。 Jian ge chi cun 。 秤 小 斗 。 減 割 尺 寸 。 Since beginningless time, when we were merchants, we cheated customers little by little with altered scales or measuring equipment and gave them less than what they paid for.
Dao qie fen zhu 。 Qi wang gui he 。 Yi cu 盜 竊 分 銖 。 欺 誷 圭 合 。 以 麤
yi hao 。 Yi duan huan chang 。 Qi qiao bai duan 易 好 。 以 短 換 長 。 欺 巧 百 端
Xi wang hao li 。 希 望 毫 利 。 We also cheated them with inferior products. We tried all possible ways to get extra profit for ourselves, just to make little gains. 48

Ru shi deng zui 。 Jin xi chan hui 。 如 是 等 罪 。 今 悉 懺 悔 。 We sincerely repent offenses such as these.
You fu wu shi yi lai 。 Zhi yu jin ri 。 又 復 無 始 以 來 。 至 于 今 日 。
Chuan yu qiang bi 。 Duan dao chao lue 。 Di han 穿 窬 墻 壁 。 斷 道 抄 掠 。 抵 捍
zhai xi 。 債 息 。 Since beginningless time, we dig through walls and blocked public streets to rob people and we rudely refused to pay interest for our debts.
Fu qing wei yao 。 Mian qi xin qu 。 負 情 違 要 。 面 欺 心 取 。 We pretended to be nice to people but stole from them behind their backs.
Huo fei dao ling duo 。 Gui shen qin chu si sheng 或 非 道 陵 奪 。 鬼 神 禽 畜 四 生
zhi wu 。 之 物 。 We even took necessities from ghosts, sprits or animals with illegal means.
Huo jia tuo bu xiang 。 Qu ren cai bao 。 或 假 託 卜 相 。 取 人 財 寶 。 We pretended to be fortune-tellers and asked for treasures and valuables from others.
Ru shi nai zhi 。 Yi li qiu li 。 E qiu 如 是 乃 至 。 以 利 求 利 。 惡 求
duo qiu 。 Wu yan wu zu 。 Ru shi deng zui 多 求 。 無 厭 無 足 。 如 是 等 罪

Wu liang wu bian 。 Bu ke shuo jin 。 無 量 無 邊 。 不 可 說 盡 。 We were never content, no matter how much we had already.
Jin ri zhi dao 。 Xiang shi fang fo 。 Zun fa 今 日 致 禱 。 向 十 方 佛 。 尊 法
sheng zhong 。 Jie xi chan hui 。 聖 眾 。 皆 悉 懺 悔 。 Today, we sincerely repent to the buddhas, the Dharma, and the holy sages for all such offenses.
Yuan cheng shi chan hui 。 Jie dao deng zui 。 Suo 願 承 是 懺 悔 。 劫 盜 等 罪 。 所
sheng gong de 。 Sheng sheng shi shi 。 De ru yi 生 功 德 。 生 生 世 世 。 得 如 意
bao 。 Chang yu qi zhen 。 Shang miao yi fu 。 寶 。 常 雨 七 珎 。 上 妙 衣 服 。
Bai wei gan zhuan 。 Zhong zhong tang yao 。 Sui yi 百 味 甘 饌 。 種 種 湯 藥 。 隨 意
suo xu 。 Ying nian ji zhi 。 所 須 。 應 念 即 至 。 With the merits from this repentance, we hope that, in all future lives, we will always have what we wish such as the seven jewels, elegant clothes, delicacies, and medicines.
Yi qie zhong sheng 。 Wu tou duo xiang 。 Jie neng 一 切 眾 生 。 無 偷 奪 想 。 皆 能
shao yu zhi zu 。 少 欲 知 足 。 We hope that all living beings shall not give rise to the thoughts of stealing and robbery and they all can be content with what they have and not desire for more.

Bu dan bu ran 。 Chang le hui shi 。 Xing gei 不 躭 不 染 。 常 樂 惠 施 。 行 給
ji dao 。 濟 道 。 They shall joyfully participate in benefiting others by making donations and doing charity work.
She tou mu sui nao 。 Ru qi ti tuo 。 Hui 捨 頭 目 髓 腦 。 如 棄 涕 唾 。 廻
xiang man zu 。 Tan bo luo mi 。 向 滿 足 。 檀 波 羅 蜜 。 They shall not hesitate to give up their heads, eyes, marrow, and brain as if they are spit and secretion from our body to help other living beings, and they shall transfer all merits to the Paramita (perfection) of contentment.
Zhong deng ci fu chan hui 。 Tan ai zhi zui 。 眾 等 次 復 懺 悔 。 貪 愛 之 罪 。 Next, we shall repent the past offenses from craving and desires.
Jing zhong shuo yan 。 Dan wei yu gu 。 Guan zai 經 中 說 言 。 但 為 欲 故 。 關 在
chi yu 。 Mo sheng si he 。 Mo zhi neng chu 癡 獄 。 沒 生 死 河 。 莫 知 能 出 The sutras say that sentient beings are locked up in the jail of ignorance and drowning in the river of birth and death because of their desires. They do not know how to get out.
Zhong sheng wei shi wu yu yin yuan 。 Cong xi yi 眾 生 為 是 五 欲 因 緣 。 從 昔 以
lai 。 Liu zhuan sheng si 。 Yi qie zhong sheng 。 來 。 流 轉 生 死 。 一 切 眾 生 。 They have been transmigrating in the cycles of birth and death since beginningless time due to causes and conditions of their five desires.
Li jie sheng zhong 。 Suo ji shen gu 。 Ru wang 歷 劫 生 中 。 所 積 身 骨 。 如 王

she cheng 。 Pi fu luo shan 。 舍 城 。 毘 富 羅 山 。 Their bodies and bones from their countless past lives can be piled up as high as Mt. Vipula in the city of Rājagraha.
Suo yin mu ru 。 Ru si hai shui 。 Shen suo 所 飲 母 乳 。 如 四 海 水 。 身 所
chu xue 。 Fu guo yu ci 。 Fu mo xiong di 出 血 。 復 過 於 此 。 父 母 兄 弟
Liu qin juan shu 。 Ming zhong ku qi 。 Suo chu 六 親 眷 屬 。 命 終 哭 泣 。 所 出
mu lei 。 Ru si hai shui 。 目 淚 。 如 四 海 水 。 The total volume of milk they drank from their mothers, the blood they lost, and the tears they shed over the death of their parents, brothers and sisters, close relatives, and spouses are like that of the four seas.
Shi gu shuo yan 。 You ai ze sheng 。 Ai jin 是 故 說 言 。 有 愛 則 生 。 愛 盡
ze mie 。 Gu zhi sheng si 。 Tan ai wei ben 則 滅 。 故 知 生 死 。 貪 愛 為 本 Thus, there is a saying that lives are born because of desires and lives shall cease to be exist when desires are diminished. Desires are the basis of births and deaths.
Suo yi jing yan 。 Yin yu zhi zui 。 Neng ling 所 以 經 言 。 淫 欲 之 罪 。 能 令
zhong sheng 。 Duo yu di yu 。 眾 生 。 墮 於 地 獄 。 Therefore, the sutra says that sentient beings shall receive the following retributions when they commit the offenses of sexual desires.
E gui shou ku 。 Ruo zai chu sheng 。 Ze shou 餓 鬼 受 苦 。 若 在 畜 生 。 則 受 52

ge que 。 Yuan yang deng shen 。 Ruo zai ren zhong 鴿 雀 。 鴛 鴦 等 身 。 若 在 人 中
Qi bu zhen liang 。 De bu sui yi juan shu 。 妻 不 貞 良 。 得 不 隨 意 眷 屬 。 They shall suffer as hungry ghosts, in the hells, or as birds. If they are born as human, their wife shall be promiscuous or their spouse is not who they want to marry.
Yin yu ji you ru ci e guo 。 Shi gu jin 婬 欲 既 有 如 此 惡 果 。 是 故 今
ri zhi cheng 。 Qiu ai chan hui 。 日 至 誠 。 求 哀 懺 悔 。 Today, we sincerely repent and beg for forgiveness for these offenses and retributions due to our sexual desires.
Zhong deng you fu wu shi yi lai 。 Zhi yu jin 眾 等 又 復 無 始 以 來 。 至 于 今
ri 。 Huo tou ren qi qie 。 Duo ta fu nu 日 。 或 偷 人 妻 妾 。 奪 他 婦 女
Qin ling zhen jie 。 Wu bi qiu ni 。 Po ta 侵 凌 貞 潔 。 汙 比 丘 尼 。 破 他
fan xing 。 梵 行 。 We repent that, since beginningless time, we seduced, took by force, or raped the spouses of others and we offended bhikkunis’s body and ruined their practice of pure conduct.
Bi po bu dao 。 Zhu xin xie shi 。 Yan yu 逼 迫 不 道 。 濁 心 邪 視 。 言 語
chao tiao 。 Huo fu chi ta men hu 。 Wu xian 嘲 調 。 或 復 耻 他 門 戶 。 汙 賢
shan ming 。 Huo yu nan zi 。 Wu zhong ren suo 善 名 。 或 於 男 子 。 五 種 人 所

Qi bu jing xing 。 Ru shi deng zui 。 Wu liang 起 不 淨 行 。 如 是 等 罪 。 無 量
wu bian 。 無 邊 。 We also coerced and bullied others to commit immoral conduct, judged people with deviant thoughts, slandered and laughed at others, shamed others openly to ruin their reputation, smeared other’s good name, and we engaged in defiled conducts with men and five kinds of people.
Jin ri zhi cheng 。 Jie xi chan hui 。 今 日 至 誠 。 皆 悉 懺 悔 。 Today, we sincerely repent these countless offenses.
Yuan cheng shi chan hui 。 Yin yu deng zui 。 Suo 願 承 是 懺 悔 。 婬 欲 等 罪 。 所
sheng gong de 。 Sheng sheng shi shi 。 Zi ran hua 生 功 德 。 生 生 世 世 。 自 然 化
sheng 。 Bu you bao tai 。 Qing jing jiao jie 。 生 。 不 由 胞 胎 。 清 淨 皎 潔 。
Xiang hao guang ming 。 相 好 光 明 。 Through the merits from repenting the sexual offenses, we hope that we shall be born naturally from transformation and not from wombs and we will be pure and clean with good and bright look.
Liu qing kai lang 。 Cong li ming da 。 六 情 開 朗 。 聰 利 明 達 。 We will have healthy sensory organs, clear consciousness, and are bright and intelligent.
Liao wu en ai 。 You ru zhi gu 。 Guan bi 了 悟 恩 愛 。 猶 如 桎 梏 。 觀 彼
liu chen 。 六 塵 。 We will be fully aware that cravings and desires are like fetters and handcuffs and we will observe the six dusts as illusions.

Ru huan ru hua 。 Yu wu yu jing 。 Jue ding 如 幻 如 化 。 於 五 欲 境 。 决 定
yan li 。 Nai zhi meng zhong 。 Bu qi xie xiang 厭 離 。 乃 至 夢 中 。 不 起 邪 想
Nei wai yin yuan 。 Yong bu neng dong 。 內 外 因 緣 。 永 不 能 動 。 We will resolve to cut off the five desires to the extent that we will not have any evil thought even in our dreams and no causes and conditions can affect us.
Chan hui fa yuan yi 。 Gui ming li san bao 。 懺 悔 發 願 已 。 皈 命 禮 三 寶 。 After we have repented and made resolves, again, we take refuge in the Triple Gem.
Qian yi chan hui shen san ye jing 。 Jin dang ci 前 已 懺 悔 身 三 業 竟 。 今 當 次
di chan hui 。 Kou si e ye 。 第 懺 悔 。 口 四 惡 業 。 Since we have repented the offenses committed by our body, we will now repent the four offenses by our speech.
Jing zhong shuo yan 。 Kou ye zhi zui neng ling zhong 經 中 說 言 。 口 業 之 罪 能 令 眾
sheng 。 Duo yu di yu 。 E gui shou ku 。 生 。 墮 於 地 獄 。 餓 鬼 受 苦 。 The sutra says that the living beings shall descend and suffer in the hells and as hungry ghosts because of the offenses committed by speech.
Ruo zai chu sheng 。 Ze shou xiu liu gou ge niao 若 在 畜 生 。 則 受 鵂 鶹 鴝 鵅 鳥
xing 。 Wen qi sheng zhe 。 Wu bu zeng e 。 形 。 聞 其 聲 者 。 無 不 憎 惡 。 They may be born as one of birds such as collared owlet or mynar that others are disgusted when they hear their sound. 55

Ruo sheng ren zhong 。 Kou qi chang chou 。 You suo 若 生 人 中 。 口 氣 常 臭 。 有 所
yan shuo 。 Ren bu xin shou 。 Juan shu bu he 言 說 。 人 不 信 受 。 眷 屬 不 和
Chang hao dou zheng 。 常 好 鬪 諍 。 If they are born as humans, they often have bad breath and no one will listen to or believe in what they say and they will have spouses that argue and fight with them all the time.
Kou ye ji you ru ci e guo 。 Shi gu jin 口 業 既 有 如 此 惡 果 。 是 故 今
ri zhi cheng 。 Gui yi san bao 。 Jie xi chan 日 至 誠 。 皈 依 三 寶 。 皆 悉 懺
hui 。 悔 。 Today, we sincerely take refuge in the Triple Gem and repent for these offenses by our speech.
Zhong deng zi cong wu shi yi lai 。 Zhi yu jin 眾 等 自 從 無 始 以 來 。 至 于 今
ri 。 Yi e kou ye 。 Yu si sheng liu dao 日 。 以 惡 口 業 。 於 四 生 六 道
Zao zhong zhong zui 。 Chu yan cu guang 。 Fa yu 造 種 種 罪 。 出 言 麤 獷 。 發 語
bao heng 。 Bu wen zun bei 。 Qin shu gui jian 暴 橫 。 不 問 尊 卑 。 親 疎 貴 賤 Since beginningless time, we committed oral offenses when we were born in the Six Realms and in four forms including using foul and rude languages to people that we came to contact with regardless their status or closeness to us.
Shao bu ru yi 。 Bian huai chen nu 。 Ma li 稍 不 如 意 。 便 懷 嗔 怒 。 罵 詈 56

hui ru 。 Wei xie hui e 。 Wu suo bu zhi 毀 辱 。 猥 褻 穢 惡 。 無 所 不 至
Shi bi xian hen zhong shen bu wang 。 Lian huo jie 使 彼 銜 恨 終 身 不 忘 。 連 禍 結
chou 。 Wu you qiong yi 。 讎 。 無 有 窮 已 。 We scolded and humiliated them so harshly and rudely over minor matters that those we scolded held grudges against us all their lives, which in turn caused troubles for us incessantly.
You huo yuan du tian di 。 He ze gui shen 。 又 或 怨 黷 天 地 。 訶 責 鬼 神 。
Bian chi sheng xian 。 Wu wu liang shan 。 貶 斥 聖 賢 。 誣 汙 良 善 。 We cursed and blamed everything and everyone, even scolded ghosts and spirits, condemned virtuous sages and framed innocent people.
Ru shi e kou 。 Suo qi zui ye 。 Wu liang 如 是 惡 口 。 所 起 罪 業 。 無 量
wu bian 。 Jin ri zhi cheng 。 Jie xie chan hui 無 邊 。 今 日 至 誠 。 皆 悉 懺 悔 Today, we sincerely repent these offenses committed by our speech.

Since beginningless time, we committed various offenses by false speech and by twisting and covering up facts for the sake of getting good reputation and material rewards.

bu jian 。 Bu jian yan jian 。 不 見 。 不 見 言 見 。 We also deliberately lied about something being there when it was not and something not being there when it was. We claimed that we had seen when we had not, and that we had not seen while we had.
Wen yan bu wen 。 Bu wen yan wen 。 Zhi yan 聞 言 不 聞 。 不 聞 言 聞 。 知 言
bu zhi 。 Bu zhi yan zhi 。 Zuo yan bu zuo 不 知 。 不 知 言 知 。 作 言 不 作
Bu zuo yan zuo 不 作 言 作 。 We claimed that we had not hear something when we had heard and pretended that we did not know about something when we did. We said that we did something when we did not, and that we did not do something when we did.
Qi wang xian sheng 。 Kuang huo shi ren 。 Zhi yu 欺 誷 賢 聖 。 誑 惑 世 人 。 至 於
fu zi jun chen 。 Qin qi peng jiu 。 父 子 君 臣 。 親 戚 朋 舊 。 Not only we cheated and lied to the worthy sages, we also deceived others including our parents, children, our superiors, subordinates, relatives, and friends.

wu bian 。 無 邊 。 We boasted that we attained the sagely fruits of “Stream-Enterer” and even Arhat, and that we were a pratyekabuddha, non-retrogressed bodhisattva that the divine beings and powerful spirits would come to show off their powers at our demands so we could gain respects and offerings.
Jin ri zhi cheng 。 Jie xi chan hui 。 今 日 至 誠 。 皆 悉 懺 悔 。 Today, we sincerely repent these offenses from speech. 59

fan 。 返 。 We used superfluous words in writing and in songs describing glamour, vanity, and seductive postures that the people of middle and lower classes were influenced, losing control of their mind to indulge in intoxicants and sex excessively.

sui zhong chen xiao zi 。 Zhi shi ren ren 。 雖 忠 臣 孝 子 。 志 士 仁 人 。 We disregarded public opinion and took revenge on personal enemies using our status and power. We appeared to be loyal and filial, patriotic, and benevolent.

wu bian 。 Jin ri zhi cheng 。 Jie xi chan hui 無 邊 。 今 日 至 誠 。 皆 悉 懺 悔 Today, we sincerely repented the countless offenses committed by excessive speech.
You fu wu shi yi lai 。 Zhi yu jin ri 。 又 復 無 始 以 來 。 至 于 今 日 。
Yi liang she ye 。 Zuo zhong zhong zui 。 以 兩 舌 業 。 作 種 種 罪 。 Again, since beginningless time, we committed various offenses due to double-tongued speech.
Mian yu bei hui 。 Qiao yu bai duan 。 Xiang bi 面 譽 背 毀 。 巧 語 百 端 。 向 彼
shuo ci 。 Xiang ci shuo bi 。 說 此 。 向 此 說 彼 。 We praised someone in their face but slander them behind their back and we distorted what one said about the other and told the other one and vice versa.
Wei zhi li ji 。 Bu gu hai ta 。 惟 知 利 己 。 不 顧 害 他 。 We did so for the benefit of oursleves with regards for how we harm others.
Chan jian jun chen 。 Wu hui liang shan 。 Shi jun 讒 間 君 臣 。 誣 毀 良 善 。 使 君
chen cai ji 。 臣 猜 忌 。 We framed the benevolent colleagues in the face of our superiors and create distrust and rivalry between them.

shu kuang 。 Shi zi en sang 。 Peng you dao jue 疎 曠 。 師 資 恩 喪 。 朋 友 道 絕 We also caused enmity between parents and children, married couples to be separated, relatives to distant with each other, and friends to become enemies.
Zhi yu jiao shan er guo 。 Yu meng shi huan 。 至 於 交 扇 二 國 。 渝 盟 失 歡 。
Jie yuan lian bing 。 Shang sha bai xing 。 結 怨 連 兵 。 傷 殺 百 姓 。 We even caused peace treaties to be broken, wars between countries, and soldiers and innocent civilians to be killed.
Ru shi liang she 。 Suo qi zui ye 。 Wu liang 如 是 兩 舌 。 所 起 罪 業 。 無 量

tai yao yan 。 Qi fei fa xiang 。 態 妖 艷 。 起 非 法 想 。 We dressed as man or woman, tall or short, dark or fair, made seductive poses, and gave rise to unwholesome thoughts.
Huo er tan hao sheng 。 Gong shang xian guan 。 Ji 或 耳 貪 好 聲 。 宮 商 絃 管 。 伎
yue ge chang 。 Huo qu nan nu yin sheng 。 Yu 樂 歌 唱 。 或 取 男 女 音 聲 。 語
yan ti xiao zhi xiang 。 Qi fei fa xiang 。 言 啼 笑 之 相 。 起 非 法 想 。 We loved to hear sounds of our liking: music of string or brass instruments, songs by men or women, and seducive sounds that give rise to unwholesome thoughts.
Huo bi jie ming xiang 。 Chen tan long she 。 Yu 或 鼻 藉 名 香 。 沉 檀 龍 麝 。 鬱
jin su he 。 Qi fei fa xiang 。 金 蘇 合 。 起 非 法 想 。 We liked to smell precious incense and fragrance from flowers or animals and gave rise to unwholesome thoughts.

Qi fei fa xiang 。 起 非 法 想 。 We enjoyed good food that is fresh and delicious, regardless that it was cooked fresh from living beings (which created more causes of our suffering) in order to nourish our body which is consisted of four great elements and gave rise to unwholesome thoughts.
Huo shen le hua qi 。 Jin xiu zeng hu 。 Yi 或 身 樂 花 綺 。 錦 繡 繒 縠 。 一
qie xi hua 。 Qi zhen li fu 。 Qi fei fa 切 細 滑 。 七 珎 麗 服 。 起 非 法
xiang 。 想 。 We wore clothes made from expensive fabrics that were nice and smooth and decorated with seven jewels.
Huo yi duo luan xiang 。 Chu xiang guai fa 。 You 或 意 多 亂 想 。 觸 向 乖 法 。 由
ci liu gen 。 Suo zao zui ye 。 Wu liang wu 此 六 根 。 所 造 罪 業 。 無 量 無
bian 。 邊 。 Because of aforementioned sensual desires, we gave rise to unwholesome thoughts and our minds were full of confusions which led us to evil actions.

Ci bei xi she pian fa jie , 慈 悲 喜 捨 遍 法 界 ， Kindness, compassion, joyfullness and generosity premeates the Dharmadhatu.
Xi fu jie yuan li ren tian , 惜 福 結 緣 利 人 天 ， Treasure the merit, make friends, benefit heaven and earth.
Chan jing jie heng ping deng ren , 禪 淨 戒 行 平 等 忍 ， Meditate, chant, follow precepts and equally tolerate to all.
Can kui gan en da yuan xin 。 慚 愧 感 恩 大 願 心 。 Shamefulness, thankfulness and vow for the highest pledge.
