NICU RENOVATION The decision to use HI-MACSⓇ, which was on the hospital’s list of approved materials, was made early in the renovation process. The color Oatmeal became the base color for the unit’s neutral color palette and was repeated for other shared spaces of the unit, such as the staff workstations and break room.To be included in the hospital’s list of approved products, materials were required to meet the highest standards of cleanliness and functionality. Cleanliness and sanitation issues that are so critical in any healthcare facility and are doubly important around these young patients. Newborns in NICU are among the most vulnerable patients in the hospital. They are admitted to the unit if they are born premature, experience problems during delivery, or develop health issues in their first few days of life. Brigham and Women’s Hospital had a set of approved project materials, which includes HI-MACSⓇ thanks to its hygienic property.

A UNIQUE SHAPE FOR FUNCTIONAL DESIGN The U-shaped reception desk is large and functional. It gives visitors a welcoming first impression but is large enough to block access to the rest of the unit. The shape also allows for innovative lighting.”There is accent lighting on the underside of that curve,” Brumbach said. “It creates a halo effect on that desk.” The architects and hospital are pleased with the final product.”It turned out very well,” Brumbach said. “The end result was really strong.”

PERRYSBURG CANCER CENTER

When selecting the surfaces that would best suit this facility, Shital Galani, Architect and Design Director for Andrews Architects chose HI- MACSⓇ because it is non-porous and easy to clean.

BEAUTY AND DESIGN WITH SAFETY IN MIND In accordance with common healthcare facility standards, Andrews Architect selected products for the Cancer Center in a white color, specifically HI-MACSⓇ Venus. This pale-hued surface is flecked with transparent chips, catching glimmers of light and bringing a much- needed element of brightness to the space. According to Shital, “HI- MACSⓇ is a very durable product that can withstand the rigorous cleaning in a healthcare environment.” The center’s Nurse Stations and Linear Accelerator bays feature HI-MACSⓇ on the countertops, transaction tops and wall caps. The exam rooms and wash areas are also equipped with HI-MACSⓇ on the countertops.

UT MEDICAL BRANCH OPERATING ROOMS

Mercy Health Perrysburg Cancer Center Officials at the University of Texas Medical Branch had to consider important qualifications when selecting wall cladding for their hospital. Hospital Location: Perrysburg, OH walls must be made of a material that is easy to clean and resists the growth of bacteria, mold and mildew. The walls also have to be strong enough to Design: Andrews Architect, Shital Galani Fabrication: Cutting Edge Countertops avoid damage if hit with hospital equipment. The University of Texas Medical Branch found the perfect material with HI-MACSⓇ. Material: HI-MACSⓇ Venus

Although hospitals have many choices for the wall cladding, HI-MACSⓇ offers an excellent solution. Solid surface walls are made of natural and synthetic ingredients: mineral, resin, color and other additives. The mix is cast into shapes or sheets. Most solid surfaces contain alumina trihydrate or ATH, which is refined from a type of clay. It is not only a natural fire retardant but also a material that is hard enough to withstand the impact from carts and machines yet soft enough to be formed by machines.

The two main resins used in solid surface materials are acrylic and poly methyl methacrylate. Acrylic-based resin creates a sheet that can be heated, bent into a shape and cooled without loss of performance. The non-porous material does not require sealing and resists the growth of mold and mildew. The two-part adhesive used at the joints creates a solid surface with inconspicuous seams. Solid surfaces are also easy to repair with a patch if they become damaged.

Unlike PVC, solid surfaces such as HI-MACSⓇ are low-volatile organic compounds and have been proven safe in several third-party tests. HI- MACSⓇ hit all of the key performance criteria outlined by the Guidelines for Design and Construction of Healthcare Facilities, making them the perfect choice for hospital wall cladding.
